Slow ways of life have mostly disappeared. Many see slow ways of life as ancient, naive, or largely impractical. We live in an instant world where if you ask how their day is, they will say “busy” as if it is a good response. Few people will even ask why that person is busy because it’s not worth the energy. Unfortunately, our education system in America has been deeply influenced by the “need for speed”, or what George Ritzer has termed “McDonaldization” which is, “the process by which the principles of the fast food industry are coming to dominate more and more sectors of the world.” Education continues to make shortcuts that reflect the four dimensions of McDonaldization. Essentially, this seeks the most efficient way to get a student …show more content…
from kindergarten to grade 12. In an assembly line, things are homogenized or made similar as much as possible.
In education, we tend to see this in the assumption that the most important thing a group of kids has in common is the year they are born. The education system today should not be McDonaldized in order for our students to succeed. Higher education offers a variety of options to pursue a degree path, whether that be a traditional university, or a completely online degree plan. Meaning that no matter which degree path students wish to take, there is an online class for them. Online programs offer a more affordable option to students than a traditional college does. For example, there are zero commuting costs, and textbooks are not a required purchase as you can download them on to your computer. Online classes are better than physically attending a university because it allows people with constraints in their life to take part in higher education that has not been …show more content…
McDonaldized. On the other hand, online learning has the negative aspects. To begin with, limited social interaction prevents to study how much time an individual wants. Always online programs give people a possibility of limited to the use of their programme. Later students will have to pay money if they want to continue a course further. Furthermore, the only method of communication of online learning is through e-mail, chat room or discussion groups. People cannot interact with others to face to face. It is the unnatural communication way. Humans do not see and feel a relationship with classmates and feedbacks. However, there are many issues traditional colleges are faced with, such as: a shortage of courses, budget cuts, and higher tuition fees. These issues have forced students to find alternatives to traditional colleges. Currently, online courses have nearly three million students enrolled for online degree programs, and nearly six million enrolled in at least one online class. Clearly, online education is the most popular alternative to traditional college. Online class are continually improving there reputation, undoubtedly helping to fuel its expansion. Skepticism of this has faltered due to new studies proving that online education is just as if not more effective than face to face learning. Commercials showcasing online students studying in there pajamas only poke at the surface of a multitude of other benefits available through online education.
Copies of lectures or academic videos are sent to the student to study and take notes on to complete other assignments. Many students fight traffic to get to class on time, this trouble is now obsolete as classes are attended from the comfort of your own home. Online education gives students convenience and flexibility by allowing them to choose their own class dates, enabling them to go to work night or day. No special library trips are required for readings as all readings are available online. These are just a few benefits you can reap for enrolling in an online degree
program. Shyness is a main contributor to many students demise in the class. Because most classes grade on participation, it leaves the more reticent students with a low grade. However, one thing is clear, with online courses these students are more willing to participate because it eliminates the face to face interactions inhibiting their success. I do understand that being passive is not the way to go in life, but these online classes truly help by easing these shy students into an environment where they are not scared to speak their mind. For most student, college means quitting jobs for education. I made this mistake last semester. For some students, the cost of college requires them to still work full time. As previously mentioned, the flexibility of online class allows students to work around their work schedule so that they are still able to manage work and academics. Most people are not omniscient, so they cannot predict the weather. So instead of missing an important lecture due to a snowstorm, students can just stay at home and attend class. While some studies show online students slightly outperforming their traditional classroom counterparts, most indicate that there is little difference in overall performance between the two formats, according to the American Sociology Association. However, one major difference is that student-learning style plays a role in each format's success. Students who are highly self-directed, organized and autonomous will likely thrive in an online environment, while those who tend to rely on instructors for direction may struggle. Similarly, extroverted students who enjoy face-to-face classroom interactions may do best in a traditional environment, while introverted students may welcome the solitary qualities of online classes. An online manner in education has both its pros and cons, as with anything. To me online educations pros significantly outnumber its cons. It is necessary for humans as it can deepen and accelerate skills. Because this form of education is not Mcdonaldized, students will finally be able to work at their own pace, and fully grasp concepts.
Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.
However, on the other side of things every does not agree with spending thousands of dollars and hope to get a career out of it. The price of college increase yearly leaving so individuals discouraged about what to do with their life. Some discover that they’re be better off going off to a trade school granting immediate work experience instead of waiting four plus years to get the real deal experience. Some of the most exceptional people are known to be a “college dropout” to devote themselves solely to there business ventures that led them to be millionaires, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Kanye West and Bill Gates. For the individuals who do wish to explore higher education but do not have the funds to do a trial and error at university have the opportunity to take free online courses. However those courses do not come with a degree in the end. Gaining knowledge through self-exploration by searching on to Google for free online classes. Is an easier way to discover how much a person can handle academically without wasting time and money on an experience that does not fit. Going to college right after high school is a very expensive trend. However, there are many other ways to execute a successful future without going through four years of a liberal arts
French students get 1 ½-2 hour lunch breaks, and many countries including France have off-campus lunch programs, where they can go home or to a restaurant for lunch. Why can’t Oak Creek High School have off-campus lunch? By the time students are in high school, they should be responsible and trusted to have off-campus lunch privileges.
Almost everyone, especially middle-class families, face financial struggles during their lifetimes. It mainly starts when the children grow older and most likely, will want to attend college. As soon as they are able to, students want to find a job, such as a fast-food job, to possibly take a load off of their parents or jump-start their independence. Amitai Etzioni, a very well-known educator amongst prestigious schools who has a Ph.D in Sociology from University of California, Berkeley, touches upon this subject. All throughout his essay, Etzioni uses multiple tactics to justify this opinion that teenagers working in fast-food chains affects their academics. In the essay titled, “Working at Mcdonald’s”, Etzioni claims that teenagers tend to focus on instant gratification from money instead of what could be beneficial in the long run along with the interference of fast-food jobs, that could be detrimental to their educational and work careers.
Education remains a cornerstone for society as it has for decades. Technology advances, the economy fluctuates, and politics change, but education remains, not only important but imperative for personal and social growth. Yet, as important as it is touted to be, the quality and purpose of learning is often lost in the assembly-line, manufactured process of education that exists today.
Students learn and do their best when they are hungry, and uncomfortable! That makes perfect sense right? If you’re like most Americans, this may be one of the most ridiculous statements you have ever heard. I know I have never done anything better hungry. Many students sit through their lunch time at school because they have no food to eat because they don’t have the money to afford it, or they are not able to bring food from home for various reasons. This is why many schools have free and reduced lunch programs. But not everybody can apply for these programs; even middle class families in today’s economy sometimes can’t give their child cash every day. Times are tough, and every family is different. These are good programs, but they are not good enough. One child missing a meal, and going hungry is too many in my book. That’s why I think it should be at least a state law in North Carolina, if not a federal law, that offers free lunch in all public schools for all students, regardless of income. This way it’s simple, cost effective and easy, and nobody will be singled out, or go hungry if they do not bring their lunch from home.
There are many advantages to online learning, it affects the way people can learn. According to “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students”, “students have a greater willingness to write or work on computational skills”. “They say student like the immediate results of having online learning.” Another advantage is that students can learn at their own pace. With learning at their own pace they will be able to actually know the information well. If, they are in a regular classroom setting they may no...
School has been in our lives for the longest time and it has always been a positive experience. It sets students on a path to achieve their education goal and stepping stones to a career! Now with all the advancements in life, students have the opportunity to do online classes. This is useful if the pupil is not able to attend school or their school does not offer some classes that they would like to take. Experiencing both of these ways of schooling, I have an understanding of the differences between the two. The major differences between online school and traditional school are the flexibility opportunities, the communication with the teachers, and the time management/discipline from the learner.
There is good reason for the growth in online learning in college environments. Student populations have diversified since the introduction of the personal computer and internet (O’Malley and McCraw). Students with geographic, job, or other constraints are now able to benefit from a college education because advances in technology have enabled learning for those for whom higher education was previously not within the realm of possibility.
...nditions. Students taking online classes might find it easier to attend family gatherings, traveling, and attended to personal needs. An online class allows the students to work on their own time, to whereas the traditional classes they have to stick with a schedule.
In modern society technology has made an advancement in history and has helped launched a new advancement for society. It is a great source that helps get job done and has made work a lot faster and more efficient. However, some might consider these advancements to be a little too overwhelming. In society today, people are always on the go so they often look for ways that are fast and efficient. For example, now and days we often see many fast food restaraunts all over the place, just waiting for the average busy consumer to stop by maybe on their way to work or something to grab a bite to eat. These fast food restaurants are often easy to spot and become so familiar to most people that going there can be part of the everyday routine. According to the following sources online there is a theory called “McDoanldization”, that is used to describe the spread of the fast food chain industry, and how it has influenced the society’s social structure and even how people behave and act. McDonaldization is a theory created by George Ritzer, who has come up with a theory to explain how a society is becoming “rationalized.” This relates to how corporations have taken control of how the government runs society. According to the sources online, Corporations of Fast Food Industries have taken over and created a process that helps eliminate aspects of individuality in society. It has become a fast growing trend and takes conformity to a whole new level. According to the theory McDonaldization is based on four central principles: predictability which is the ability to recognize and familiarize yourself with that place based on what you expect from it. For example when people go to a fast food joint they expect to see the standard c...
Education should be one of the most important things in a person’s life. Most people are trying to achieve an education. It is stressful when you are trying to decide what school you want to go to. While debating on whether to attend college or not, many people wonder which education is better online or traditional education. As the cost of education increases a lot of students are choosing online education because its’ flexibility. If you look at it from both point of views you are accomplishing the same thing from both, which is a degree. Some people look at the cost of the school to see if they will go to school there. When you going by means of the cost of how much it will be for the degree you are trying to achieve you have to look at the salary you will be making with the major you are pursuing. Online and traditional education has a lot of similarities and differences.
As the economy has changed in the last ten years so has the schools budgets and they are looking for ways to keep costs down. There is much evidence that distance education can be more cost effective than traditional education. Everyone can save a substantial amount of money by going with an online education because schools would not need facilities and equipment. Schools would also save money by not needing to provide services and programs to students. Students would save by not needing to drive to and from school, buy school supplies, and they can earn a degree in half the time than a traditional school setting.
Some students within society need to have online learning to complete college degrees due to their lifestyles. While it
Those who disagree with me think that online learning allows a student to learn at their own pace. Students are able to take the time to understand and figure out problems with the resources that are provided. The convenience of learning in an environment that is conducive to that particular students learning is provided by the student. If the student feels comfortable they are more apt
