Alkanes
The alkanes are the simplest form of organic compounds. They are made up of only Carbon atoms and Hydrogen atoms. All of the bonds are single and the number of hydrogen atoms versus carbon atoms follows this formula: CnH2n+2
Alkanes are all non-polar molecules so they aren't soluble in water. Here are some more facts. -Referred to as "Saturated" -They have
-low densities
-low melting points
-low boiling points -Refer to "Slide 29" sheet
We couldn't find any information on who discovered them. Or on the what, where, or when. However the first alkane that was discovered was probably methane. Because, of course, this is the gas that cows belch.
The journal of toxology report that a 15 year old boy was stricken with hemiparesis "resulting from acute intoxication following inhalation of butane gas." Hemiparesis is when half of a person's body is paralyzed. Through reactions alkanes can be transformed into chloroform. This has been shown to accumulate in lungs of swimmers after they swim for extended periods of time.
As mentioned above chloroform can be produced which can be used for anesthesia. Also dichloromethane, or paint stripper and 1,2-dichloroethane which is a dry cleaning fluid. Here is a sample reaction where a halogen replaces a hydrogen. CH4(g) + C12(g) ----> CH3Cl(g) + HCl(g)
There are many uses for alkanes, for instance: Propane is used in gas grills, butane is used in cigarette lighters, through various reactions scientists can make paint stripper, anesthesia or dry cleaning fluid. The
Pentanes and Hexanes are also highly flammable and make really cool explosions.
Heptane, octane and nonane make up gasoline. The "Octane Scale" on gas pumps uses a system which rates n-heptane at a 0 and isooctane at 100.
Currently propane gas is being studied to use it as a fuel for more
The goal of this lab is to exemplify a standard method for making alkyne groups in two main steps: adding bromine to alkene groups, and followed by heating the product with a strong base to eliminate H and Br from C. Then, in order to purify the product obtained, recrystallization method is used with ethanol and water. Lastly, the melting point and IR spectrum are used to determine the purity of diphenylacetylene.
However, the atoms are arranged a little differently. Two molecules that have this type of relationship are called isomers.

The late sixties were a time filled with sex, drugs, and rock and roll. A huge part of American culture at the time was focused around these three things. Musicians possessed a tremendous amount of social influence, and like wise, society put a lot of emphasis on the lives and attitudes of musicians. Of the rock groups from this time period, the Beatles were by far the most influential. The British rock group was probably the most catalytic band in rock and roll history. Although they came together in the shadow of the Beatles, another band of that era was Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane was deemed the first of the San Francisco psychedelic rock groups. Jefferson Airplane was always considered to be a psychedelic rock group, but it was not until later in their existence that the Beatles fell into this category as well. Both groups earned this title for their creative style of rock as well as for their experimentation with drugs. Each of these groups wrote songs that alluded to drug use at one time or another. Two of the most criticized songs from these bands are Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles, and White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. White Rabbit is a song latent with drug references. The connection with drugs in Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is not as clear. Although John Lennon claims that he had no intention of making references to LSD in his song, the abstract lyrics and metaphoric language invite drug connotation. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and White Rabbit mirror each other in their association with LSD and their allusions to Alice in Wonderland, but looking into these songs more deeply it is obvious that both artists were writing about escape; escaping reality.
Television shows such as Full House were once considered extremely funny—of course, to some people they still are comical, but the popular shows are now The Simpsons or South Park. Situational comedies are not as common as they used to be; America’s public does not seem to crave relatable shows as much as crave simply being entertained, perhaps by vulgar comedy. Will believes that America is “determined to amuse itself into inanition” (paragraph 5). Many may argue that South Park encourages mindful thinking as it brings up controversial issues, however the cartoon brings up the issues in such a manner that the audience’s main focus is on the humorous content. Will also brings up the television show Fear Factor and advises that viewers steer clear of it. Fear Factor is not about people conquering their deepest, darkest fears. The contestants are not eating worms or covering themselves in cockroaches because they want to accomplish something. They put themselves through the disgusting tasks in order to win money and to be a part of the entertainment world. Fear Factor is all about giving the public what it wants: suspense and action in a relatable television show. The show catches the viewers’ attention as they watch an instant and think “I could never do that!” It’s a mystery why viewers who were grossed out by the small competitions on the show continued to watch it. The horror of seeing someone do strange acts that they themselves felt as though they could never do someone intrigued
Identifying Five Unknown Chemicals I was given 5 unknown samples, which are sodium chloride, sodium thiosulfate, calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium nitrate and these samples are all white and solid. However, I don’t know which substance is which sample and I was only given some information about the physical and chemical properties of these substances. In order to identify the 5 unknown samples, knowing which sample is which substance, I have to carry out this experiment, finding out the chemical and physical properties of these samples. How can we identify five unknown chemical samples that seem to look the same?
E-commerce is an emerging area that encompasses the process of indirectly or directly buying, selling, trading products and services electronically (Yasin, Mario, Czuchry, & Lisboa, 2010). As a result of market placement advancements in the realm of technology, there have been a growing number of organizations that have re-engineered the way in which they operate so as to maintain consistency with the emerging e-business model. The internet has been growing at an unprecedented rate, and as such, the facets of the way organizations perform e-commerce has been changing to meet economic demands. One of the most important factors for an organization is to understand what contributes to effective e-commerce as this provides them a competitive edge. According to a study conducted by eMarketer Inc, the internet has become a dynamic virtual medium for buying and selling services and products and sales have been approximately 32.4 billion in both the public and private sectors in 2005 (eMARKTER INC, 2006). This paper will briefly explore the importance of Canadian e-commerce by closely examining the key trends.
Hallucinogens or psychedelics are mind-altering drugs, which affect the mind’s perceptions, causing bizarre, unpredictable behavior, and severe, sensory disturbances that may place users at risk of serious injuries or death. Hallucinogens powerfully affect the brain, distorting the way our five senses work and changes our impressions of time and space. People who use these drugs a lot may have a hard time concentrating, communicating, or telling the difference between reality and illusion. Hallucinogens cause people to experience - you guessed it - hallucinations, imagined experiences that seem real. The word "hallucinate" comes from Latin words meaning, "to wander in the mind."

There are four different types of hydrocarbons each having a different homologous series (formula for carbon chain). These being an alkane (formula = CnH2n+2), alkene (formula = CnH2n), alkyne (formula = CnH2n-2), and an alkanol which has the same formulae as an alkane only that is has a hydroxide molecule which replaces one of the hydrogen atoms (refer to figure 3 and
There are many ways to examine the subject of alchemy, including alchemy as a source of symbolism, psychology, and mysticism. It has also been an influence on the world view of various writers, artist, and musicians. The focus of this report is alchemy as a pre-chemistry, which gave a new impulse towards the preparation of medicinal remedies and also was a major influence on today's scientific investigations.Alchemy is an ancient art, practiced in the Middle Ages. The fundamental concept of alchemy stemmed from Aristotle's doctrine that all things tend to reach perfection.
Chemical Warfare is not the same as nuclear warfare, or the same as biological warfare. Chemical warfare involves using the deadly properties of chemical substances as weapons. Most weapons used in chemical warfare are considered to be“weapons of mass destruction” or, WMDs, and are not considered to be conventional weapons. Chemical warfare does not depend upon explosive force to neutralize targets; it depends on the chemical properties of a chemical agent weaponized. Defoliants are an example. They are used to kill off vegetation and deny its use of cover by the enemy. “Defoliants can also be used against agriculture and livestock to promote hunger and starvation but with protective equipment, and decontamination measures, the effects of defoliants can be neutralized. From these properties of bonds we will see that there are two fundamental types of bonds--covalent and ionic. Covalent bonding represents a situation of about equal sharing of the electrons between nuclei in the bond. Covalent bonds are formed between atoms of approximately equal electronegativity. Because each atom has near equal pull for the electrons in the bond, the electrons are not completely transferred from one atom to another. When the difference in electronegativity between the two atoms in a bond is large, the more electronegative atom can strip an electron off of the less electronegative one to form a negatively charged anion and a positively charged cation. The two ions are held together in an ionic bond because the oppositely charged ions attract each other as described by Coulomb's Law.
Interview development is frequently the difference between success and failure. My personal experience on both being an interviewer and interviewee has helped me gain knowledge. This was an effective way to receive a comeback in an understanding environment. This assignment has helped me build confidence on how to be successful during an interview, how my strengths can recover my weaknesses, and how i can turn my biggest flaws into strengths.
