New York is home to over 19 million people out of the over 7 billion people alive in the world today. There are people of different ethnicities, sexualities, and religions that travel to visit New York all year long. Tourists come to see numerous attractions in New York, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Another reason to visit New York is to try the delicious cuisine such as cheesecake or pizza, that thrives in the busy streets of New York. The Oscars or the VMA’s that occur in this state that people come from all over the world for. Alicia Keys was born on January 25, 1981 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. Her birth name is actually Alicia Augello Cook but she decided to have a stage name because to her, keys opened many doors and reminded her of piano keys. Keys began playing the piano when she was seven and proved to be a prodigy. She then was able to get accepted into Professional Performance Arts School of Manhattan at the age of 12 and graduate as valedictorian, at 16. Keys was accepted in Columbia University on a full scholarship but she dropped out after four weeks to fully concentrate on pursuing her music career. After she signed with J Records in 1999, that was when she started to become well-known across the world. Keys now has 15 GRAMMY Awards and other awards from different ceremonies. Not only has Keys gotten recognized for her inspiring music that she wrote and produced, she is recognized by gives back continuously. She is supporting charities such as Keep A Child Alive, being a spokesperson for Frum Tha Ground Up, and has started her own movement called No Makeup Movement. Keys has and will continue to impact the world by being generous and caring to those in need. Each of them had struggles as a child, whether it was a death of a parent or difficulties with money. Despite the troubles that they had, they were able to persevere and make something of themselves. All three of them showed that they wanted to succeed and pushed themselves to achieve their goals. Alicia Keys quit college to focus on her music career because she believed in herself and had confidence that she could make it big, and she did. Lucille Ball was always fascinated with the art of acting and when her school told her mother that she wasn’t putting enough effort and dedication, she proved them wrong. Ball showed dedication by choosing to not give up and instead better her skills. She was then able to create a sitcom with her husband, having her as the star and making the show number one. Marc Jacobs struggled with his addiction when he was younger and still continues today. However, even with Jacobs addiction and the criticism he gets daily, he endured it by being dedicated and passionate to designing clothes. These three individuals are examples of how people should believe that they can achieve anything they put their mind to. Even if someone is struggling at the moment, they have to persevere because it will pass and all the hard work they did will pay
