The situation in which I will be referring to throughout this essay is a family dinner celebrating my brother’s engagement to his fiancé whom my mother approves of but my father does not. The works of Arlie Hochschild on emotional work will be used to analyze the situational context. Arlie Hochschild is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley whose area of interest is in how individuals manage their emotions and perform emotional labor in places that require control over one’s character such as their workplace. Her work suggests the idea that emotion and feeling are social. In this Hochschild (1983) means that there are rules to how we feel in every situation such as birthday parties and trying to stay happy at them or funerals and being expected to express emotions of grief. An individual may engage in emotional work by changing their affective state to match the feeling rules of the situation, Hochschild (1983) refers to this as two concepts: surface acting and deep acting.
Having a family is no easy task, especially when you are faced with many challenges that are unforeseen. Sometimes one imagines or hopes for an ideal family. The ideal family would consist of a spouse, one or two kids and live happily with little to no conflicts. The reality is that even if one tries to avoid conflict by all possible means, conflict is inevitable. Stressors and strengths within a family can be seen in almost every situation. Although stressors tend to be more noticeable than the strengths. Some of which will be discussed later on, although it will be mainly focused on the strength and stressors faced after a divorce for children. But if one focuses on the stressors more than the strengths, one will only see stressors rather than solutions.

Stress is defined in the dictionary as “state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life”. Everyone encounters stress in their life caused by many different variables in life and we all cope with in different ways. The way one copes with the stress is how it can affect our body. Some take to working out, eating healthy, take breaks from what is stressing you out and getting plenty of sleep which are good ways to cope with it. Some take to other coping mechanisms that are not very great for the body. Some examples are stress eating, abuse of drugs and alcohol, bottling up the stress, and depression. These bad methods can cause serious damage to one’s health on the body.
Most people do not understand how much stress a typical high school student carries with them on a daily basis. There are innumerable stereotypes that are aimed at teenagers all the time such as, being lazy, bad drivers, always on the internet, or "we have got it easy". Newsflash people! Stereotypes are not proven facts, they are just beliefs created by other people. There have been multiple studies conducted to show that high school students are stressed. For example, In May of 2013 there was an article called, One in three teenagers suffers chronic stress, and it explained that thirty percent of high school students were overwhelmed with stress and considered it to be serious. Stress can affect a high school student in a good way and, or a bad way. Stress in students come from the pressure of having to be the very best in personal relationships between your family and peers, sports, and academics.
Today, many students report more anxiety due to stress than child psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. In a 2006 survey of 1,300 students at a public high school in Needham, Massachusetts found that 58% of the students surveyed reported between a great deal of stress and extreme stress due to homework (Bennett and Kalish). Many students in today’s time, have so many things to do that it is difficult for them to come home, only to have to finish five to six hours of homework. This, with the added effects of after school activities and technology, only adds to the stress that is put on students.
“On average, teens reported their stress level was at 5.8 on a 10-point scale, compared with 5.1 for most adults.” (NBC News) If I were to rate my stress level during the school year I would give myself a four or a seven. The differences between my stress levels depend on what time of year it is. During the school year, my stress levels are more likely to progress into higher integers unlike the small levels I maintain in the summer. Homework, tests, and essays – these are just a few examples of what I stress about during the school year. (SS9) When I think of going off to college next year and applying for scholarships, the stress starts to take over. Another factor that contributes to stress in my life is the way I manage my time. It is not healthy to be stressful, it increases blood pressure and can lead to heart attacks if not controlled in the proper way. The word “stress” has been a part of my vocabulary since I was a young boy. Whenever I was feeling down, tired, or even anxious I would just say I was “stressed out,” a pretty common phrase in today’s world. The problem is that I took elementary, middle, and high school a little too serious academics-wise for my own good. The smallest of assignments would stress me out, as my body would tense up and I would start breathing heavily until they were finished. Now, if I was talking about large projects or life-changing assignments it would be one story, but school-related stress had such a profound affect on me that I was diagnosed with an extreme peptic ulcer in my stomach when I was fourteen years old, and later with ADHD and General Anxiety
Are the new standards and expectations the world has for teenagers really creating monsters? The amount of stress that is put on students these days between trying to balance school, homework, extra curricular activities, social lives, sleep and a healthy lifestyle is being considered a health epidemic (Palmer, 2005). Students are obsessing over getting the grades that are expected of them to please those that push them, and in return, lose sleep and give up other aspects of their lives that are important to them, such as time with friends and family, as well as activities that they enjoy. The stress that they endure from the pressures of parents, teachers, colleges, and peers has many physical as well as mental effects on every student, some more harmful than others. The extreme pressure on students to get perfect grades so that they will be accepted into a college has diminished the concept of actually learning and has left the art of “financing the system” in order to succeed in its place (Palmer, 2005).
Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. At school this may lead to poor attendance, a significant drop in grades or even annoyance with schoolwork, in a good student. There are many studies that have been performed to prove the correlation between responsibility in school and academic performance being the cause to academic stress. Just like there are numerous causes to academic there are also numerous cures, such as changing mind set and behavior. Academic stress is something majority of students in school can relate to and the cause of it can be something small as a bad grade on an evaluation, It will enforce the student to try harder in the future but it will for sure cause some sort of stress, even if it is for a moment. Stress from school can be one of the most essential causes of teen depression.
Stress comes in many shapes and forms, it comes with the job of being human. My sources of stress come from the major parts of my life; academic pressure, social settings, and time management. As a high school student, high school in general is very stressful, but not only am I high school student I am also a college student. Double the responsibility means double the stress.
