Alan Freed
Alan Freed was born December 16, 1922 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
He was considered the most the most famous Disc Jockey(DJ) in rock 'n roll history,
however, controversy encircled the man and he recieved lots of criticism especially from
white adults during his career. I think that Alan Freed greatly helped shape the sound of
music today and further advanced the progression of rock music. He is the person who
coined the term "Rock & Roll" and also put up with a lot of nonsense regarding the term.
At the time "Rock & Roll" was an urban african american term for sex, I think Alan realized
that the popular white culture would be turned off by the term R&B, which was mainly
associated with black artists, so he decided to give it a different name and expose that
style of music to the general public.
His radio name and nickname was "Moondog". These were also the names of his
non-segregated concerts in which black and white teenagers came to listen to good rock &
roll regardless of the singer's color. Moondog Balls were very popular and drew much
criticism from white parents. At the first Moondog Ball over 25,000 kids, mostly white,
showed up in the March of 1925 in Cleveland. I believe that what Freed did was good as

These factors had huge impacts on his success due to the music of Motown playing a significant role in the racial integration of American society. Segregation and discrimination in America was a serious social issue that affected the lifestyle of African-Americans in the 1960’s and the civil rights movement was a social movement that had an aim of ending racial inequalities. As a result of the segregation between these two cultures, there was a lot of rising racial tension which consequently led to the culmination of race riots. The social issues at that time played a significant part in Gordy’s success in the production of Motown as he wanted to produce the “sound of young America” regardless of one’s colour or race and to take this sound to wider audiences including Baby Boomers. “Motown was about music for all people- white and black, blue and green, cops and the robbers.
There have been many bigshot artists that have gone down in music history over the years. One man in particular, however, will forever be known all over the world for his famous works and amazing stage performances. This man is none other than the one and only Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix altered the style of rock and roll during the late 60’s early 70’s and is widely considered one of the most influential guitar players amongst the music world to this day.
The book depicts the story of culture conflicts of the music, which arose from the introduction of the foot-tapping, hip-swaying music now known as rock n' roll (Graarrq). The outcome of rock n’ roll coincided with tremendous uproar in the movement to grant civil rights to African American. Trapped in the racial politics of the 1950s, rock n’ roll was credited with and criticized for promoting integration and economic opportunity for blacks while bringing to “mainstream” cloture black styles and values (Altschuler). Black values were looked over and kind of not important to whites. Whites were very much so well treated then blacks were, however no one spoke out until the outcome of rock n’ roll.

Although he lived a short life, he is still famous in some people’s eyes. I met a woman who had attended one of Elvis’s performances and she said it was the best concert she had ever been to. During the concert she said Elvis was dancing and all the girls were going crazy as always. He removed his scarf and threw it into the crowd she was the lucky one who caught it. She still has his scarf in her house, and will never forget the memories of that night. Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977 in his home from heart failure. The King still lives on in many people’s lives and his music career helped many people. Elvis Presley led the way for many musicians, and has impacted the lives of many people.
During the Civil Rights era, African Americans changed the way people looked at music by ending the segregation in the music world and by making a well-known “soundtrack” and influence during the Civil Rights Movement.
Examples mostly point to how Berry Gordy manipulated the way things were put out there and how they would favorable to a big audience. The way he told the black artists to do their hair and makeup can be looked at as making them white instead embracing their color. Also when he put records out the pictures were never of the artists always symbols. The reason he did this was so the people could not judge the album before even listening to it. Like everyone says “never judge a book by its cover”, that never truly stayed true for everyone. But by doing this the artist never got recognized by bigger corporations and never got the credit for what they did. Gordy’s style was different from most and some if not most artist really struggled in understanding why he did not use their face or made them look like white people. They were often really offended by it and as were the white people. So there was a push and pull with the people. A give and take with the music, but ultimately the artist sacrificed the fame and fortune to come together for a greater cause and change the country needed. Also later the artists were recognized and appreciated.
Before the war started, a wealthy white man by the name of John Hammond worked to integrate black and white music.1 Since his childhood, he enjoyed the music of numerous black artists, and he wanted to share his love with the rest of America. He used much of his inherited fortune to make this possible. He went against the general opinion of society and his parents, who despised black people. Hammond refused to ignore black artists’ musical abilities because of their color, “I did not revolt against the system, I simply refused to be a part of it.”2 He used his money to organize the most eclectic group of musicians ever assembled, for an integrated audience of his time. Childhood discipline determines how the child will act at home and in social settings and instills habits and different values that will stick with a child for its whole life. There are many different methods of discipline, however some are more beneficial than others. A generally calm and consistent attitude is best when trying to discipline a child because increased frustrations do not teach the child anything except that aggression is the answer. Corporal punishment is another non-beneficial method of parenting although it is still used today. When looking at discipline from a teacher's perspective, it seems extremely difficult to be able to maintain several children at one time. This is true, however, there is a special teaching program that simplifies the process of disciplining children.
Although he later denied that he ever said it, Sam Phillips-the man who discovered Elvis Presley-is reputed to have said, “if I could find a white man who had the Negro sound the Negro feel, I could make a billion dollars” (Decurtis 78). Certain radio stations would not play the work of black artists in the segregated America of the 1950s. But, nevertheless, rock ‘n’ roll was an art form created by African-Americans. Little Richard, whose songs “Tutti Fruitti” and “Long Tall Sally” became hits only after white-bread versions were made by Pat Boone, said, “It started out as rhythm and blues” (Decurtis 78).
There are many theories to choose from and I decided to choose and focus on general strain theory. I chose general strain theory because I believe this particular theory applies to a lot of people across the United States, especially those people who are in the middle class and below. First I am going to explain what general strain theory is and what Agnew finds most important about it. Secondly, what micro level components are used in this theory and how they affect people. Lastly, I am going to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of general strain theory. Not everyone falls victim to general strain theory because not everyone is in the same social and economical predicament. A lot of people are unfortunate to go through these strains/stressors of life and it all comes down to how one chooses to deal with the hand life dealt them.

The beginning of racism in the music industry began only 13 years after the creation of the phonograph by Thomas Edison in 1877. Recorded sound was still pretty new at the time, but it didn’t take long for record companies to form: Berliner, Edison, and Columbia, all of which functioned under the plan that the artist didn’t matter, but the song did. Under this plan, companies skipped over the talent from stage and focused on finding anyone who could carry a turn and had good diction. By the 1890’s, they “had established a cadre of profession white recorders” that “could reproduce works of African American performers with “authentic” dialect”. Rock 'n' roll came from a type of music called rhythm and blues (R&B), which consisted of doo-wop and gospel music. It was popular mostly in the south during the 40’s but it soon grew to urban cities. It was Les Paul’s invention of the electric guitar in 1952 that added a new sound and made rhythm and blues into the rock 'n' roll we all know and love today. Most of the artists from R&B were African American, and in their song they would reference sexual matters. So together it gave a bad connotation towards the music and their race, therefore both were never fully accepted in the north.
