The history of Air Defense Artillery dates back to the early nineteenth century. Air Defense’s introduction in World War 1 allowed for more diversity in terms of furthering joint, air, and missile counteractive operations. Like any other branch, air defense has gone through trial and error before actually finding its appropriate space in the army. The Air Defense Artillery branch continues to increase its technical ability and steadily improves its success, especially during Desert Storm and Desert Shield, all while keeping true to its humble beginnings. Air Defenders were the first Army units to engage the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. They covered the withdrawal to Bataan in the Philippines, having shot down eighty-two enemy planes. In Europe, AAA units integrated into United States armies. AAA units were among the first ashore on D-Day and not only provided air cover for the beachhead but assisted in destroying the enemy bunkers on the heights overlooking the beaches. During the Korean War, AAA units at Suwon airbase were the first Army units to engage the invading North Korean Forces. Throughout the war, the tremendous firepower of Air Defender’s broke the stalemate of many battles such as “Heartbreak Ridge” which was a great movie and “Pork chop Hill”. During the Cold War period as the USSR developed both nuclear weapons and the intercontinental bomber force to deliver them led to the development and fielding of hundreds Air Defense Artillery (ADA) missile batteries around the United States. December 1940, the Army Air Corps planned an experiment for black aviators in an all black fighter squadron. This group would be called the 332nd fighter group and would consist of four fighter squadrons, the 99th, 100th, 301st, 302nd. (4 A). The squadrons that made the most history would be the 99th and the 100th. The 99th was to be made of 33 to 35 pilots and 278 ground crew men, but those accusations came from another source when the real number of men in the 99th would be a total of 12 black cadets and 1 officer trainee. 3 squadrons usually make up a fighter group so the 99th was nicknamed the “lonely Eagles”. They would be flying PT-17s, then BT-13s, and later AT-6s, that would have better landing flaps, retractable landing gear, and 650-horse power engines (Mckissack). They would be the first fighter squadron of the 332nd to go into combat over North Africa. Being part of the 12th Air force, they would fly tactical missions over the Mediterranean theater (Haulman). Going over in ships, April 15, 1943, they would arrive in Morocco, May 1943, only to be told that the battle between the Germans and North Africans was basically over. They then tested out P-40L War Hawks, and Curtis’s, that were built to reach up to 350 mph, climb over 22,000 ft., and ferry over 1,000 miles. In today’s world, the use of airplanes in wars or in everyday life has become a part of how we live as human beings. Removing the air forces of the world is like taking a step back in time when wars were only fought on land or sea. WWI began only eleven short years after the Wright brothers achieved powered flight in 19031 and yet aircrafts were being used for surveillance and eventually combat purposes. It is understood that these aircrafts were primitive, but they laid down the foundation for what we know today as fighter jets. The Fokker Eindecker “revolutionized air combat by successfully employing a synchronized forward -firing machine gun mounted on the engine cowling”2. Because this airplane became the first to successfully use a synchronized machine gun, it allowed its pilots to become the first aerial combat tactitions3.
During the World War II there was many different aspects on the Allies side that helped them defeat the Axis Powers. One crucial aspect for the Allies was the well-built airborne divisions. The 82nd Airborne Division, from the United States Army, was considered to be the firmest and most successful division during the Second World War. After being reactivated for World War II, the men of the 82nd Airborne division took on intense training to later on take part in some of the most dangerous missions of World War II.
(Rostker) Air Defense Artillery played an immensely significant role in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm with units from 11th Brigade Air Defense Artillery and the 32d Air Defense Command rapidly deploying into theater. There was no doubt of the effectiveness of the air defense units in Desert Storm and Desert Shield. The air defense units displayed sound defensive tactics and preparation for the campaigns. They demonstrated excellent capabilities providing coalition and ground forces the much-needed assistance to succeed during the war. No matter how much people have criticized Air Defense Artillery following Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the units played a critical role in the Army’s strategy to win the Gulf War.

Air Defense Artillery (ADA) has been used in multiple battles, from World War I to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Although, different names have been used to label Air Defense Artillery, they have always served the same purpose, to destroy enemy air threats. During World War II, Air Defense Artillery was known as Anti-Aircraft Artillery. This title continued, even through the battle of the Kasserine Pass. The day of 19 February 1943 began a wretched and depressing battle for America and its allies. Located in Tunisia, the Kasserine Pass is about a two mile wide gap in the Atlas Mountains, where some of the U.S II Corps and British military held off and defeated the Axis offensive. In the late 1930’s, over 150,000 volunteer aviation enthusiast wanted to put their skills and planes to use to protect their country. The Civil Air Patrol was born was born one week prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the course of WWII, Civil Air Patrol logged over 500,000 flight hours, sunk two enemy submarines. The Civil Air Patrol has an interesting history from World War II up until the present day. In the early stages of Civil Air Patrol, there was a strong need for national defense on the east coast where German U-boats had sunk multiple cargo and supply freighters within miles of the coast. The US Army Air Corp had made the decision to allow Civil Air Patrol to make ninety day trial patrol missions up to one-hundred and fifty miles out from the east coast to search for enemy submarines.

Innovations to the maneuverability and capabilities of artillery in the United States Army was proven critical in shaping the outcomes of battles. Battles during the Mexican-American war were a perfect example of how these innovations made instant impacts. The 1st Battalion of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, under the command of Lt. Col. Harold Moore, engaged with the 66th Regiment of NVA regular infantry under the command of General Chu Huy Man. Given a search and destroy mission, 1-7 Cavalry infiltrated the objective area via helicopter to search for and destroy the NVA enemy.
