The Movie “Aging of Champion” I had the opportunity in my Social Work with Aging to watch a movie called “Aging of Champion”. It is indicated in this paper, I will be connecting class material witnessed in the movie and I will discuss ways in which the film challenged or confirmed my views on aging. The movie is a documentary that follows five competitors who sprint, leap, swim, a 100-year-old tennis champion, 86-year-old pole vaulter, and rough-and-tumble basketball grandmothers as overcome the obstacles of aging that our society puts on them. I believe the documentary challenged and confirmed my views on aging. The strong values they have is personal freedom, education, choice and accommodation, and they understand the benefits of services. In the documentary, I saw the older adults between this ages who had strong believes in personal freedom, and understood the importance of education. For example, the pole vaulter utilized the benefits of services because he understood that in order for him to beat the score of the oldest man on the pole vault he needed help. Therefore, he used his services and found someone to coach him. In class, I also learned about the challenges of aging which are accepting new physical realities, loss of significant others, loss of independence, and resolving working identity with retired identity. I believe many of the older adult in the movie understood the challenges of aging and they accepted it as positive idea to still be successful and not let challenges of aging stop them for reaching their goals. For example, the woman basketball team was strong and determine to win even if some limitation of aging got in the way. In class, I also learned that personality stress management is very important with this population. How a person respond to the stressors of aging depends on several factors. For example, cognitive appraisal which is how stressful a client perceives the event to be, how significant the stressful event is, support system, and the amount of control/choice the client has over the stressor. Therefore, in the documentary it was interesting so understand the stress that older adults faced. For example, in the movie some of the stress that was indicated was the loss of their significant other, and being diagnosis with cancer.
