I don't understand how you can be an African American that believes that now is not the time to speak up. I was told by a friend that now is not the time for the #blacklivesmatter movement. She also said that news is more depressing now because everyone sees the things that happens to African Americans. She believes that there are more important issues that we should be focused on instead of black lives. All I have to say to others who might also think like this is “If not now, then when?”. When will be a good time to focus on the oppression that our people have been dealing with since slavery? If your answer is “When more important issues are solved”. That translates to never to me. Being African American has never been easy. At birth, we are born with a target on our backs for simply being a different color and whites are born privileged. One would think that when slavery was abolished that the target would be removed but that isn’t so. King states in his article that “…white supremacy saturated public culture...”
What we fail to realize is that there is strength in numbers and that we must not lose sight of the struggles that went on before us that granted our civil rights. When will there come a time where our freedom is not up for questioning? Are we living in a world where everyone is considered as free or is it just a figment of our imagination? All of these questions ponder through my mind and causes me to think about why is it that people of African or African American descent considered as a threat in the eyes of people that are considered as more superior than Africans/African Americans? Did it ever occur to people that people of a “superior” race is to blame for people in society thinking that blacks are seen as a threat? A book that I 've been reading, Burning Down The House:The End of Juvenile Prison by Nell Bernstein, basically explains why blacks are perceived as a threat. When youth is put into a juvenile prison, they have these routine strip-searches, eating times, bathing times, and etc for the time they are there until they complete their sentence. What people fail to realize is that inside those prisons the inmates are being victimized and abused by guards, staff as well as other inmates from excessive touching in inappropriate areas to purposely doing things to make them want to retaliate so that they are able to aggressively touch them causing them to be mentally and physically strong so they are able to handle

We could leave the media powerless so that nothing they write even matters because we already know who we are and we refuse to fall into any kinds of racial stereotypes. One last thing that I’d like to mention is that it’s important to know that even if you are white and you think that racial injustice doesn’t affect you, it does. It’s also very important that you are aware of what is going on in your society since as a majority of the people it is your duty to help the minority of the people. There are people in America that makes us wonder why there is a world to begin with. With every action that has went towards the cause it has been shun down continuously. For example, The Black Lives Matter Movement was opposed with the All Lives Matter Movement. Yes, all lives do matter, but it was taking away from the significance of racial inequality towards blacks. Things can be done to advocate the issue, but it will continue to be ignored, unless everyone is on the same accord for change.
