How frequently does the average teenager listen to music while studying or finishing up some homework? The technique is so frequently used to ease the boredom that the majority of people do not even think about how it could affect their execution of the assignment before turning on their favorite tunes. Almost every survey done on the affect that music has on accuracy has shown there to be little to no correlation between the two. During a study done at the University of Wales, it was observed that “having [music] on while they worked was just as distracting as hearing someone talk.” (Doraiswamy, 8 October 2012) This observation would show that music most likely has a slight negative effect on a person’s ability to comprehend and recall information.
Music has been proven, with certainty, to have a strong effect on mood. The scientific cause behind this is that the rhythm and tone of different genres of music causing a person’s heartbeat to speed up or slow down. Depression and drowsiness are associated with a slow heartbeat, while excitement and happiness are associated with a faster heartbeat. Faster heartbeats can cause more productivity for short periods of time, so listening to upbeat music while doing a physical activity can prove to be very beneficial. It would make sense that this would be true for more educational ventures, too. Mood has a very defined role on the productivity of people, so controlling mood with music to perform better seems like a very sensible thing. The unfortunate factor in this is that according to a Binaural Beats survey, “the heartbeat will continue to increase until a person has become very stressed or drowsy, depending on the music type.” (Best Binaural Beats, 16 Feb. 2014)

Imagine a world, where everyone has advanced focus, where everyone has no stress, and where everyone is perfectly happy. This perfect utopia may seem like a setting in a futuristic science fiction book, but this utopia is not some far flung reality. It’s possible, through the powerful healing effects of music. Music for centuries has entertained the crowds who came to watch it, but until recently have we learned the effects it brings to the human body. From raising your oxygen saturation, to lowering your blood pressure to changing mood, the health effects of music are becoming more and more revealed. As man begins to unlock the secret’s of music, this knowledge can start being applied to the real world. This includes the world of business, academia, and more recently medical fields. So in short, music can provide stress relief, it improves focus, and it improves mental health.
Personally, I have found that listening to music has been very beneficial to my educational experience. It has helped me immensely whilst studying subjects such as Math and English. For instance, last year in my Creative Writing class, we were assigned the task of writing a script for a play. The teacher was reluctant to grant us access to our music, but with promises of good behavior from the students, she eventually capitulated to our requests. Music is a wonderful thing. I can listen to it when I'm lifting, when I need to sleep, when I want to get away. I can listen to it when I’m say, or angry of to make me happy. I can recall things when it comes to my favorite music. One thing I always wondered is how can music be such a multifaceted factor in making me feel these different ways, and remember like I do. How does my brain factor into all of this too. According to the National Association for Music Education, SAT takers with a background involving musical instruction score significantly higher than their non-musically trained counterparts; a surprising 56 points higher on the verbal portion and 39 points higher on the math portion of the test. But what is not generally controversial though, and is supported by a strong body of evidence, is the fact that ongoing music education does help children across a wide range of criteria - including overall academic performance. The idea of the Mozart effect began in 1993 with a study conducted by Rauscher, Shaw & Ky. This study involved 36 university students taking three different IQ spatial reasoning tasks and for each test used either Mozart’s sonata for two pianos in D major and relaxation music was played, silence was also used. The results of this experiment showed that students who had listened to the music of Mozart had better results for the spacial reasoning tests in comparison to silence or relaxation music. The results also showed that the impact of Mozart’s music was only temporary and only lasted for 10-15 minutes. Overall this study was very basic and had numerous flaws such as the sample size and also the variety of tests used to look at the impact of music (Rauscher, Shaw & Ky, 1993). In 1997 Don Campbell’s book The Mozart effect popularised the claim that music makes children smarter. This book created a public interest in music and brain development. The book uses Rauscher’s experiment as an example of what Mozart’s music can do which in this experiment shows a temporary increase in spatial reasoning, this however was misinterpreted by the public as an increase in IQ. There have always been discussions of the effects music has on ones behavior, and how it’s related to Psychology. The truth has never really been verified among common knowledge, but it’s usually something that intrigues people. They say heavy metal and rap can make teenagers violent, sad and depressing music can make teenagers sad and depressed, and some say it’s best to listen to classical music when doing schoolwork because it makes your brain more active. There have been many people that reported how music has effects on their behavior. It can lift their mood, “fuel the fire” when they’re angry, or even make it easier for them to fall asleep. People never really get the chance to research the actual science of music, and how it changes people attitudes.

It can be proven, through literary research and personal experiences, that music has a positive effect on learning and memory. It can be concluded that these positive effects have an impact on patients with Alzheimer’s, on the motor skills and auditory memory of mentally disabled children, on students attempting to remember subject manner that they are learning, and on the affectivity of advertisements. On a personal note, music has facilitated my ability to remember things, both positive and negative, a number of times. For example, in high school I memorized the days of the week in French by singing them along with a tune that was already familiar to me. I have also had multiple experiences in which I remember things that I do not want to remember such as advertisements and negative experiences because they were accompanied with specific music. Despite the miniscule negative effects of music on memory, the powerful ability of music to trigger memory production and recall is undeniably beneficial. The profound effect of music on memory and learning makes music a great tool for helping people who want to improve cognitive function, whether they need to receive treatment for a mental disease or learn new information.

It has been justify by the researchers that music has a big impact on our emotions or mood. It is because of the rhythm and tone that we hear when we listen to music. When we listen to a rhythm, our heart beats actually begins to flow or synch with it. Tones are also highly significant, when you hear a pleasing tone and it is easy to remember you can do it actually.
