After watching a movie, often does one feel some sort of emotion. Whether it be relief, confusion, or happiness, I have always heard someone express a comment regarding his or her thoughts of the film following its end. Typically, we see films as a fun way to pass the time. For others, however, movies serve as a way to escape the reality of life, help with his or her problems, or both. Therapists use this to their advantage, applying it as a form of counseling known as cinematherapy. It is as straightforward as it sounds: the therapist shows a movie that portrays a situation similar to the client’s, and hopefully it will help identify what is bothering him or her. We have not discussed categories of counseling yet, but our first couple of chapters dealt with three ways to look at the mind: psychodynamic, behavioral, and cognitive. While cinematherapy does not particularly apply to a cognitive approach, psychodynamic and behavioral do. Psychodynamic therapy focuses on the client discussing his or her problems with the therapist in hopes of surfacing repressed feelings—basically free association, which is something I will come back to. Behavioral therapy uses conditioning to replace problematic behavior with something more appropriate. A branch of behavioral therapy includes exposure therapy, which places the client in a fictional or nonfictional scenario that the client is disturbed by, ultimately treating his or her anxiety (Green, 2014). The definition is enough to see how cinematherapy relates. Because the therapist is exposing the client to a situation that is similar to their own—one that bothers him or her—it forces the client to face his or her fears. Coming to terms with what bothers the client and why it bothers him or her can help treat his or her anxiety in the end. This applies to me in that the idea of cinematherapy will help me to apply it to a cognitive approach of therapy. Since it is not a topic we have yet covered, it will help me in future lessons understand what it means. Additionally, the word cognitive is a broad term and one that is frequently used in psychology; when I think of cognitive, I will think of cinematherapy, and again, remember its definition. In Stephen King’s essay ¨Why We Crave Horror¨, he explains that the reason why we watch horror movies is because ¨… horror movies provide psychic relief¨. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form a therapy that is short term, problem focused, cost effective, and can be provided to a broad range of disorders and is based on evidence based practices, in fact it is has the most substantial evidence based of all psychosocial therapies (Craske, 2017, p.3). Evidence based practice are strategies that have been proven to be effective through research and science. One goal of CBT is to decrease symptoms and improve the quality of life by replacing maladaptive behaviors, emotions and cognitive responses with adaptive responses (Craske, 2017, p.24). The behavioral intervention goal is to decrease maladaptive behavior and increase adaptive behavior. The goal of cognitive intervention is to modify maladaptive cognitions, self-statements or beliefs. CBT grew out of behavioral therapy and the social learning theory (Dobson, 2012, p.9). It wasn’t until the 1950s that CBT started to swarm the psychology field. Due to nonscientific psychoanalytic approaches, there was a need for a better form of intervention which ensued to behavioral therapy (Craske, 2017, p.9). Behavioral therapy included two types of principles classical and instrumental. Classical conditioning is based on response behavior and instrumental conditioning is more voluntary behavior (Craske, 2017, p.10). The history of psychology was a scholarly study of the mind and behavior that dates back to the beginning of civilization. There are important details from previous theory psychologist, research have contributed to behaviorism approaches and have contributed towards specific current behavioral practices. Contemporary behavior therapy began to emerge into distinct practical and core learning theories concerning the needs and knowledge engaging cultural and professional differences.

Sigmund Freud and Albert Ellis are widely recognized as two of the most influential psychotherapists of the twentieth century. “It is argued that the striking differences in their therapeutic systems, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and psychoanalysis, respectively, are rooted in more fundamental theoretical differences concerning the essential nature of client personality” (Ziegler 75). This paper will discuss in detail, both Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytical Therapy and Albert Ellis’ Rational Emotive Therapy, as well as compare and contrast both theories.
I decided early on that I would allow myself to experience these feelings fully, because in order to be a good therapist, I need to be able to understand how the client might be feeling. I am still just beginning this journey, but I have every intention of becoming more open to embracing the new awareness that I have found in this class. This paper describing my philosophy will incorporate all three of these systems of psychotherapy in what I believe to be a clear and cohesive manner.

This paper will attempt to prove that there are several differences between counseling and psychotherapy. Definition of Counseling One survey taken by Gustad suggests a definition of counseling where he included three key elements. Counseling is a learning-oriented process, carried on in a simple, one to one social environment, in which a counselor, professionally competent in relevant psychological skills and knowledge, seeks to assist the client by methods appropriate to the latter's needs and within the context of the total personnel program, to learn more about himself, to learn how to put such understanding into effect in relation to more clearly perceived, realistically defined goals to the ` end that the client may become a happier and more productive member of his society (1957, p. 36). In lay terms counseling can be described as a face to face relationship, having goals to help a client to learn or acquire new skills which will enable them to cope and adjust to life situations. The focus is to help a person reach maximum fulfillment or potential, and to become fully functioning as a person. Definition of Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is the process inwhich a therapists assists the client in re-organizing his or her personality. The therapist also helps the client integrate insights into everyday behavior. Psychotherapy can be defined as "more inclusive re-education of the individual" (Brammer& Shostrom,1977). Objectives of counseling The objectives of counseling according to the Committee on Definition, Division of Counseling Psychology, American Psychological Association are to "help individuals toward overcoming obstacles to their personal growth, wherever these may be encountered, and toward achieving optimum development of their personal resources" (Arbuckle, 1967). In a paper written by Dr. T. Millard, it is stated that "Counseling provides clarity and a positive and constructive venue for the individual to sensibly examine the instinctive-emotional and rational (or irrational) motives which determine the drive, content, and even the form of human conduct." This shows the part which counseling plays in a clients treatment.
