Blum’s Model of Health Determinants was established in 1974. According to Shi and Shingh, “Health determinants can be defined as a major factor that, over time, affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations (Shi, L., and Singh, D. (2015).” Blum’s Model anticipated four major impacts to health care and they are: Environment, lifestyle, heredity, and medical care. All four of these major impacts has been a great advantage to Blum’s Model. As a Christian health care administrator all four of these impacts are beneficial to our lives. Dealing with lifestyle, it is important that we know all the important factors that can influence us to live a healthy lifestyle.
A Christian health care administrator can make an influence on a person lifestyle, by mentoring the community and public about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Many people do not understand how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle. Living an unconcerned lifestyle can lead to cancer, diabetes, hypertensions, and other long-term health illness. As Christian we should respect our body and carry our body as a temple. According to 1 Corinthian 6:19, “Do you know that your bodies are temples of the holy spirit, who is in you, who you received from God? You are not

your own; (The Holy Bible).” As believers of God it is important that we respect and value our body as God desires. The human body should refrain from sin. A lifestyle change is beneficial because, it allow us to live longer, healthier lives. Many factors today affect our lifestyle. According to Shin and Shingh, “Studies have shown that diet and foods, for examples, play a major role in most of the significant health problems of today (Shi, L. and Singh, D. (2015).” Maintaining a diet and eating the proper food is not an easy task. Eating the proper food can prevent healthcare complications. According to Shi and Shingh, “Current research also shows that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods, and with reduced saturated and total fact, can substantially lower blood pressure (Shi, L., and Singh, D. (2015).” Dealing with a lifestyle change is a process. First, it is always good to set goals. The most important thing about setting a lifestyle goals, is making sure it is realistic. After the goals have been set, now it is time to try to achieve the goals. If everything does not seems to be going as plan, remember to never give up. In my past I have suffered with diet and food. At the age of 23 I was weighing 480 pounds. I stayed at the doctor with plenty of health complications. The last visit the doctor specifically told me, “I could suffer a heart attack at any time.” Hearing those words was a wakeup call. I made an emergency lifestyle change but, it was not an overnight process. I still have trouble with my diet and making the proper food choice. I currently weigh 230 pounds. Since I was nonchalant about my health, I now have to deal with Type II Diabetes daily. Everything that happen in our life is a blessing because, warning comes before destruction. As a Christian we all can relate about making a lifestyle change.
Making a lifestyle change from the world to be with God is a major lifestyle change. According to 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone: the new has come (The Holy Bible).” Making a transition from the world to be with God come with many stumbling blocks. According to Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (The Holy Bible).” God know we are not perfect, and when we fall short God expect us to pick ourselves us, and to keep striving to be more like Christ. A Christian understand that living the life that God desires is hard but, it get easier over

Personal responsibility is crucial for maintaining wellness, I find the multi-causation disease model diagram according to McKenzie et al, a clear distinction of the components the three circles in the model represents, the outer circle covers factors such as economics, environment , health care system, water quality, infectious disease outbreaks and air pollution, these are factors out of an individual’s control, followed by the middle circle which covers personality, beliefs and behavioral choices, this can be altered through choices and specific behavior patterns with the potential to impact health, the inner circle is genetic endowment, the DNA that we inherit. I have based my argument on the middle circle as the bridge to wellness. The obvious is, the outer and inner circles comprises of factors beyond our control. Encouragingly, personality, beliefs, and behavioral choices that represent the circle in the middle has the potential to bridge the gap between what we cannot control and the behavior modification that can impact our genetic endowment for better or worse. From this observation coupled with the public health goal to educate and motivate the population and communities to become proactive in their well-being, the focus of this paper is to highlight the personal inherent qualities, the intangibles that can be cultivated to the state of homeostasis.
The Healthy People 2020 (Healthy People 2020, 2014) is a nationwide program created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to achieve objectives for promoting health and preventing diseases. Faith based communities may benefit tremendously in including these objectives in program planning. The main goal is for the American people to have long, healthy lives. The Healthy People 2020 program provides measurable objectives that can be applied down to the local level such as in faith based communities. These guidelines encourage high quality of life by being healthy, disease-free, accessible healthcare, and have an environment that promotes good health and wellbeing in all age levels.
It is the interrelationships among these factors that determine individual and population health. Because of these, interventions that target multiple determinants of health are most likely to be effective. Determinants of health reach beyond the boundaries of traditional health care and public health sectors; sectors such as education, housing, transportation, agriculture, and environment can be important allies in improving population health. Policies at the local, state, and federal level affect individual and population health. .Some policies affect entire populations over extended periods of time while simultaneously helping to change individual
The Health Belief Model (HBM) comes from the psychological and behavioral theorists. The premise is that there are two parts involved in health related behavior. “People are more inclined to engage in a health behavior when they think doing so can reduce a threat that is likely and would have severe consequences if it occurred.” (Brewer & Rimer, 2008, p. 152). The patient believes that a specific health action will prevent or cure the illness. How the individual responds depends on the perceived benefits and barriers of that health behavior.
The creator of our body is God. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that He is in control of our body and patients. II. Motive for Listening This topic can be relevant to everyone in here not only nurses or future nurses, but as Christians, who have a duty or mission to love another as Jesus loved us (John 15:12).
The health belief model (HBM) is a psychosocial model that was developed during the 1950’s by social psychologists of the U.S public health services, and this model was used to explain why people failed to participate in disease prevention and detection programs. The theory is one of the most health behavior theories, which is used to explain behavior change and maintenances, but often times used to predict behavior outcome (Glanze, Rimer, & Lewis, 2002).
A social determinant of health contains the important key factors that decide whether the individual or society will have healthy or unhealthy lifestyle. Social determinant of health is basically the socio-economic condition of all individuals, communities and jurisdiction to shape their health. It also gives an opportunity to an individual in whom they have got physical, societal and personal assets to find and attain their personal goals, meet their requirements and learn to survive in the environment. A community provides quantitative and qualitative ranges of resources to their population according to their needs are also a part of social determinants of health. These resources contain early childhood development, education system, food,
Social Determinants of health is the “conditions in which people are born, live, work and age that affect their health” Healthypeople.gov. (2017). Social Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020. [online] Available at: https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/social-determinants-of-health [Accessed 22 Sep. 2017]. The determinants of health are important because it helps create policies to make changes, as well as improving public health conditions by addressing the different health outcomes an individual can face and improving the need for healthier conditions. Healthy People 2020 organizes the determinants of health in both a social and physical determinant which has an impact on health.
Public health is a concept that will always be subject to conflicting opinion. Over the year’s different ‘models’ of health have been formulated in order to categorise public health into dominant areas of cause and effect. The two models in which this essay will be focusing on are the Biomedical Model and the Lifestyle Theory Model. Although both models have equally arguable advantages and disadvantages, it is difficult to state either model as being ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in defining the correct pathway to resolving the central health issues of today.
For any administrator in the health care field they must always be aware of any problem that has happened and be able to fore see any problems that might arise in the future. The administrator has to be able to work with staff and keep them up to date with any and all changes to the way in which they handle patient information. As well as be able to put aside their personal beliefs for the benefit of the organization and the patient.
Healthcare is intriguing. The health and wellness of people always has been intriguing and always will be. My background in healthcare came as an environmental pass down with a father as a Registered Nurse and a mother in healthcare management. It was inevitable that the journey of healthcare started being instilled without my knowledge of it, as a young child. A constant learning in the health sciences and management directed my way. By the start of college, the intrigue lead to compassion, lighting a fire for the administration of healthcare. This calling spurred by a great woman, my mother, who is a national redesign award winner by the Bureau of Primary Healthcare in Health Disparities. These footsteps down her similar path with careful guidance, but not to be confused with an easy path.
There are many social determinants that are present in our society, yet many of these determinants are not discussed. This is due to the fact that categorizing and discussing social groups and determinants is often seen as controversial. Although this may be true, comprehending and discussing these determinants are essential, as many of these determinants affect our health. These determinants affect our health simply by altering our own actions as well as the environment around us. Thus, comprehension of social determinants, the environment, and its ultimate connection with an individual’s lifestyle is essential in assessing many of the public health issues prevalent
The health of an individual and their communities is affected by several elements which combine together. Whether an individual is healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment.1 To a greater extent, factors such as where an individual lives, their relationships with family and friends, the state of their environment, income, genetics and level of education all have significant impacts on health, however the more frequently considered factors such as access and use of health care facilities regularly have less of an impact.6 Determinants of health is a term which was introduced in the 1970s as part of a broader analysis of research and policy on public health. Researchers argued that there was a lot of attention and too much expenditure on health being dedicated to individuals and their illnesses, and little or no investment in populations and their health. It was decided that public health should be more concerned with social policies and social determinants than with health facilities and the outcomes of diseases.7 The determinants of health include social and economic environment, physical environment and an individual’s behaviour and characteristics. The environment of an individual determines their health, holding responsible an individual for having poor health or acknowledging them for good health is inappropriate. Individuals are not likely to be able to control several of the determinants of health. These determinants that make individuals healthy or not include the factors above, and numerous others.6
Health practices such as eating well, exercising, getting checkups, seeking, and applying treatment, all have a significant impact on the contribution or
“Health is not valued till sickness comes.”-Thomas Fuller. Within the healthcare field there are many positions that help take care of people from the top of the hospital chain to the bottom. One of the most important positions that operate behind the scenes of the hospital is health administrator.
