Energy is a force or work that a physical system is capable of doing in changing from its actual state or form into a different state or form. We use energy in our everyday lives, and people all over the world, big or small, have a use of energy. People, who own a car, have a house, work in a place with light other than fire and sunlight use energy. Even electronics, appliances, hot water, heating or cooling systems use energy. Most of the resources we use for these things are often times harmful to the environment and very expensive because of the nonrenewable aspects many of them possess. Wind power is beneficial in many ways it produces a clean form of energy that saves our valuable fossil fuels. Wind power is even healthier for us, because this type of alternative energy does not produce harmful chemicals into the air which can mix with rain that is a part of our water supply and it decreases the amount of acid rain we have, so we can breathe cleaner air and drink clean water. In the state of Missouri wind power that is used for electricity only cost the user of this energy about 6 or 7 cents. However the price isn’t this low in every state in the United States. “The energy used to build a wind farm is produced by that farm within four to six months. After that, the energy it produces is free.” (Oxlade) According to Tony Zamberlan the state of California and other places with a larger population have the price of 10 to 15 cents a KWH. “Wind is a fuel, and it’s free.” (Hosansky) In the United States alone wind power has created 85,00 jobs and 400 manufacturing plants. Wind power is one of the fastest growing manufacturing sectors. It is a large possibility that wind power could produce thirty percent of the world energy within the next fifteen years. The turbines don’t even have to be put on the land we need right now. Wind turbines can be build out at sea. Wind power is even made on demand. Many of this is debatable in some parts of the world. In parts of the world where it isn’t as windy as Chicago or some places in Missouri energy from wind power is more expensive than energy from fossil fuel power stations. According to David Hosansky in 2007 it was reported that wind power cost $23.37 per megawatt hour nuclear energy at this time was $1.59 coal was $.44 and natural gas was a quarter. With concern over global warming growing, people are starting to turn a more serious eye toward cleaner sources of energy. Instead of solar power making a comeback as the ideal form, we are seeing a growth in the use of wind power. Wind farms are beginning to crop up all around the country. This new trend has gathered significant attention. Questions are being raised concerning the effects wind farms may have, from critics and supporters alike. Michelle Nijhuis, in the article “Selling the Wind” discusses the arguments on behalf of and in opposition to the increasing use of wind power, addressing what the consequences may be on the United States.
2. Personally i am for wind farms and in my opinion. I think that wind energy has a great potential not only is wind energy very reliable and sustainable. it is also not as expensive as some at the other types of renewable green energy sources.
Not only is wind energy better than fossil fuel energy, it is also better than other new energy sources. “Wind costs are much more competitive with other generating technologies because there is no fuel to purchase and minimal operating expenses” (Wind Energy Basics 3). And as for the environmental concerns of bird population, the American Wind Energy Association said, “the modern wind turbine is far less harmful to birds than are radio towers, tall buildings, airplanes and vehicles and numerous other manmade objects. Bird deaths due to wind development will never be more than a very small fraction to those caused by other commonly accepted human activities” (Parks 58).
One major problem with wind energy is its feasibility; capturing wind energy is, to some degree difficult to do. Wind energy is produced by the movement between two air masses, usually influenced by the radiation of solar energy by the earth’s surface (Freedman, 2010). It is very difficult to control the speed, direction and location of winds, thus, making the process highly unpredictable. This creates a problem with the demand-supply relationship. The greatest supply of wind energy occurs overnight when demand is low and dies down during the morning, when demand is high (Spears, 2013). This would commonly result in increase in prices to bring the supply-demand relationship to equilibrium, where the supply is sold at a reasonable price for both consumer and producers (Field, 2008). However, since 2006, Ontario has had a surplus of power, which has led to the government to pay neighboring provinces and states to take it (Canadian Press, 2013; Spears, 2013). In addition, the government has also paid private companies to stop producing power (Canadian Press, 2013; Spears, 2013). These problems have led Ontario to have a larger cost than the benefits from wind power.
Alternative energy does not focus on the burning of fuel, nor the nuclear process. Alternative energy is basically an alternative to fossil fuel. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, or even natural gas. One day coal and oil will eventually run out, and the cost of these are getting more and more expensive by the day. We can reuse alternative energy, but no matter what energy sources we use, there will always be pros and cons.
One form of alternative energy is called geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is thermal energy that is created and stored beneath earth’s crust. The most recognizable form of geothermal to most people would be in the form of a hot spring. Heat from Earth’s core heats rock and water differently; some spots can reach up to 700 degrees, whereas some receive not much heat at all. Steam from the water that receives the most heat is trapped in porous rocks underground. This is called a geothermal reservoir. Geothermal energy is very useful because it is renewable, and limitless. Heat continuously flows from the earth’s core, and continues to heat the water and produce steam. Geothermal is also useful because it is 80 percent cheaper than fossil fuels, and it requires no fuel. In fact, the use of geothermal energy decreases the independence on fossil fuels greatly. Geothermal energy does not produce pollution and could potentially save millions of dollars per year if used to replace fossil

For many years we have used energy to power our houses, cars, and cities. Most people are concerned with the energy we are using kills our planet. We have developed ways to combat that issue using natural renewable resources one example is nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is generating electricity from an atom’s center, or the nucleus. There are two ways to harvest the energy, though fusion, and fission.
First and foremost, unlike power plants that rely on combustion of fossil fuels, wind turbines do not produce atmospheric emissions. Strangely enough, wind is a form of solar energy. Winds are caused by the irregular heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the variations of the earth 's surface, and rotation of the earth. This wind flow, or kinetic energy, when "harvested" by modern wind turbines, can be used to generate electricity. There is an abundance of wind to meet our needs, “the potential of [the total] wind power [in the world] is… 20 times more than what the entire human population needs” (Maehlum). Wind turbines are a great source of energy all around the world. Wind Turbines produce wind energy that can be used to power our homes. Wind turbines convert Kinetic energy into mechanical power. Then this mechanical power gets generated into electricity. Wind turbines make energy by the wind turning the large blades, which spin a shaft that is connected to the large blades, which then operates the generator making electricity. One new idea is building wind turbines offshore in the mid-Atlantic. Offshore building of wind turbines means that these large turbines will be placed in the Atlantic Ocean. The building of these wind turbines will provide energy to states like Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia, and New Jersey. These states want to start this project as soon as possible so that the states can start saving money. Since these regions right now are burning fossil fuels uncontrollably with incredible impacts (not only to our air, but to our health) it is crucial to start right away. Offshore wind turbines will provide more jobs, cut pollution, stop warming of our planet, and save us energy costs. These wind turbines can make enough energy offshore to power about 500,000 thousand homes. However, many people disagree with this idea because they believe it is too expensive.
For years man has relied on energy in order to be successful in life. The industrial revolution relied on coal for the new inventions brought into the world. Life as has never been the same since then. However since that time, there has been little done to improve on energy efficiency and humans still primarily rely on fossil fuels for energy. For over a hundred years the Earth has become more polluted and dirtier than ever before. Now, with new, innovative technology there is an opportunity to change that and to rely on renewable, cleaner sources of energy. The main source of energy for the world should be alternative energy instead of energy from fossil fuels.
In recent years the research of scientists has come to public attention and it is a widely accepted fact that the Earth is warming up. What has caused this change in the Earth is still up for debate and a controversial issue. One side is that humans are causing the warming by burning fossil fuels. Staying on that topic, fossil fuels are limited in quantity, and some scientists speculate that we may run out sooner than we are ready for. This is where sustainable energy systems come into play. When using sustainable energy systems such as hydro electric, wind, or cruder methods such as waste incineration, burning of fossil fuels will decrease. With this decrease, or at least slowdown, of fossil fuels we will be able to reduce or maintain green house gas emissions as not to influence the warming of the globe more than we already do. And obviously we will be able to conserve our fossil fuels so that we do not run out while we are still dependent on them.
Wind power is one of the most sustainable ways of generating electricity as no toxic emissions are produced; it does not add to global warming and is one of the most available sources of renewable energy and theoretically it is an infinite source of energy. On sufficiently windy areas, wind turbines are one of the most economical methods of generating electricity, which makes it appealing to many individuals, governments and organizations. Due to this it is the fastest growing source of electricity in the world (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014) with a 10% increase in yearly additions installed in 2012 compared with 2011 (Global Wind Energy Council, 2012). However the proportion of energy that can be harnessed through wind power is restricted by the cost of the infrastructure needed, construction, the amount of wind that occurs and that there are only a narrow number of sites within the UK that are windy enough for the wind turbines to be worth installing.
With the depletion of fossil fuel resources comes speculations and debates about alternative energy sources. The world, including the Philippines, is practically dependent on a dwindling non-renewable source of energy. Today, experts are debating about and considering three options: Nuclear, Solar, or Wind Energy. Everyone has been accustomed to the bad image of nuclear energy as a result of the Chernobyl and Fukushima incidents above all others. The popular belief is that radiation from a nuclear meltdown is very harmful to humans and other living things—which is true—and that nuclear power plants are very dangerous and not ideal—which is not. According to Smith, et. al (n.d), all the nuclear disasters that ever occurred were caused by human error and natural disasters like tsunamis, not one because of system failure. Putting the false beliefs aside, with proper engineering and adequate maintenance by experts, a nuclear power plant is a very ideal and viable source of energy for the following reasons:
Wind is a form of solar energy. The term wind energy describes the process by which the wind is used to generate electricity or mechanical power. Wind turbines convert mechanical energy from the wind into electrical power. Wind turbines usually have three main parts. There are blades that connect to a central hub, a box behind the blades that contains the generator, and a long stem that connects to the ground. The way how it works is that the wind turns the blades, which spins a shaft that connects to a generator making electricity. After the electricity is produced it is sent through transmission lines to a substation that is sent to business and homes. For the sake of our planet, we must promote a renewable energy economy. Wind power can be a foundation of that sustainable energy future because it provides jobs in states that are building wind turbines, is a renewable energy source, and does not damage our environment. The environment will not be damaged by the pollution, the natural resources will not be used up, and there won’t be generating of hazardous wastes. Welcoming wind energy today will lay the foundation for a healthy tomorrow that will affect everyone in the United States. There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
