Number systems have been around since the beginning of human civilization. In the early history of mathematics, people came up with systems for counting known as bases. A base is the foundation upon which a number system was built. For example, the Mesopotamia Sumerians had a base 60 system, and some pre-Columbian civilizations used a base 20 system. Today, a base-10 system is used. Centuries ago, one of the most essential systems was invented: base-2. Also known as Binary, it has many useful applications, including in computer science. The Binary system was invented by Gottfried Leibniz, a German mathematician and philosopher, in the 1700s. Leibniz was born on July 1st, 1646. Leibniz was mostly a self taught student, only going to the Nicolai …show more content…

Without this tool, humanity would not be able to program computers to the extent that they are able to be programmed today. Computers use the Binary system to move and store all types of data and information. The principal advantage of the Binary system is its simplicity. Computers are able to use the one and the zero more easily than they are able to use decimal numbers, therefore making both programming and carrying out tasks much less complicated. Although the Binary system is easier for computers to work with, it is not as easy for humans to comprehend. The Binary system can be confusing to read at first, therefore humans typically prefer to work with the decimal system. It is not always shorter to express large numbers in Binary notation, which make it awkward for people to work with. For example, in Binary notation the decimal number 150,000,000, is expressed in Binary notation as 1000111100001101000110000000--not something you would want to put on a check! While there are some disadvantages to the Binary system, the ability for computers to process information with the Binary notation makes a valuable
