Hi Brook, really enjoyed your post! I agree there are many advantages and disadvantages. I have been a member of a nursing union and it really depends on how dedicated the union representatives is to the members. It would be nice to have better benefits and higher pay, but there is always a cost is achieving those goals. I am not for or against the union, I do know I would not cross a picket line, and work while other nursing is trying to achieve improvements in their benefits, wages, and work environment. Scabs, are individuals who cross the picket lines to replace the individuals on strike do not receive a warm welcome, and often are in danger of harm from the strikers.
As far as job security, it forces the incompetents to continue to work
The ethical issue in this situation is the willingness of the company’s director to prevent the employees from organizing in union. Among others, the company’s director try to use unfair tactic like diversion, intimidation, manipulation, termination of job contract and threat to shut down the company leading to massive loss of job. In an ethical standpoint, these tactics are wrong.
strikes turned very bad with deaths and injuries. Having unions were good in some views
Unions have an extensive history of standing up for workers. They have advocated rights of steelworkers, coal miners, clothing factory employees, teachers, health care workers, and many others. The labor movement is based on the idea that organized workers as a group have more power than individuals would have on their own. The key purpose of any union is to negotiate contracts, making sure workers are respected and fairly compensated for their work. “In theory” unions are democratic organizations, resulting in varying inner authority. Workers look for security within a job a...
Some of the cons to being an RN is some of the dangers, such as being exposed to infections and disease on a daily basis (Minnesota 1). Plus, they spend a long period of time on their feet, so they are prone to back and knee injuries (American 2). Although while being an RN generally have a set schedule each week. Some work full time, or part time, but most work an average of 40 hours a week, they may work nights, weekends, and even holidays (Minnesota 1). There are also pros to being an RN such as helping the patient and their families during a rough time, while helping the patients and their families the nurses may not be able to have time to think of themselves and their own needs, which can often in times get upsetting. Another downside to being a registered nurse is seeing people dying, but having to stay positive (Minnesota
The nursing shortage most likely does not mean a great deal to people until they are in the care of a nurse. The United States is in a severe nursing shortage with no relief in sight due to many factors compounding the problem and resulting in compromised patient care and nurse burnout. Nursing shortages have been experienced in the past by the United States and have been overcome with team effort. However, the current shortage is proving to be the most complex and great strides are being made to defeat the crisis before it becomes too difficult to change. Researchers anticipate that by 2010, the United States will need almost one million more registered nurses than will be available (Cherry & Jacob, 2005, p. 30).
The disadvantages of union membership are viewed from the employee and employer perspective. Through the employee lens, the disadvantages manifest in the form of fees, loss of autonomy, and less collaborative work environment. As part of the union, you surrender many of your individual rights in exchange for the organized results that can potentially manifest through the collective bargaining process. Therefore, there isn’t any assurance that your individual concern will even be addressed.
Early rehabilitation in the ward is safe and associated with several benefits, including improvements in muscle strength, functional mobility and quality of life. An early rehabilitation program may reduce hospital costs and hospital length of stay, and decreased hospital re admissions. The importance of self-care concept is related to human's need for maintaining and promoting health and recovery, lack of health care services, inadequate access to health services for the whole community, and increased expenditure of health care services.(Asadi Noghabi AA, Zandi M, Mehran A, Alavian SM, Dehkordi AH.,2010)).Self-care activities alleviate symptoms and
...staff would not be required to put in the overtime to compensate for the lack of workers. Patients would no longer have to suffer the neglect of the staff because he or she was too busy. Making sure the patient gets the best quality care reduces the time spent for recovery. Reducing the time spent for recovery increases the organization’s finances. Providing a safe facility also reduces the expenses on the private hospital’s budget. Ensuring a patient is safe can reduce potential use of ongoing treatment and services. Hiring the appropriate nursing staff needed can save the organization money. Instead of cutting back on staff, more staff needs to be hired to fulfil the needs of the patient. In the economy today, private hospitals need to focus on the overall long term effects of each action opposed to quick reactions resulting in financial strain for the facility.
Due to the high growth of disease and obesity, the health care profession is growing rapidly. Nurses will be in higher demand to help treat/cure the tremendous amount of patients who have become sick (“Registered Nurses”). Nursing was originated in the 19th century, beginning with a young woman named Florence Nightingale, who eventually expanded the nursing field. That is why there are Nightingale pledges at pinning ceremony in which all nurses have to agree to after receiving their degree (“Nursing”). A student that researches the nature of a job, its working conditions, the education and training requirements, along with the future job potential and earnings will be more knowledgeable when it comes to determining whether the career as a registered nurse is right for them.

My first reason supporting the motion that workers should be allowed to strike is in order to bring to the fore poor safety conditions. For instance, in the nuclear power industry, any breaches of safety can have tragic consequences. If the employees are exposed to nuclear material, this could lead to serious illnesses such as cancer, leukaemia and radiation sickness. Radioactive material could also affect residents of the surrounding area, as in the case of the Chernobyl disaster. In the light of poor safety conditions, workers striking can be justified by the fact that the government and public would be informed.
Throughout my life I have overcome many obstacles. I have worked and gone to school since I was 17, I paid for my housing, and I paid my necessities. In the past when I was unsure what I wanted to do with my life I struggled in school. I was a “B” and “C” student. I had a hard time finding something that really interested me. Fortunately, when I started working in healthcare I knew this was a career field I wanted to pursue. As my goals went up and solidified, so did my grades. I am proud to say I am a solid “A” and “B” student. And as I worked my way through the grapevine of jobs and aspirations I found that nursing was what my heart set upon.

This representative is one that the employees has chosen to engage in strikes, picketing and other problems that arise giving aid and protection (Cibull, S.J., 2009).
