Throughout the past centuries, society has utilized books for academic purposes which has impacted their lives in numerous positive ways. Traditionally, reading has been a private, isolated activity, like a one-way conversation between the author and the reader. However, the digital revolution is transforming reading into a social activity that can be shared with family, friends, and even strangers. Ebooks are encouraging the shift from printed content to digital one. There are ebooks that cost less than a dollar and they are generally cheaper than their printed colleagues. Not only are ebooks affordable and can be used with small and portable electronic devices, which makes them preferable for traveling, but they can also help to improve one’s …show more content…
Who wants to spend more money paying for the exact same product? According to Derrico, “readers now understand there are no print costs with e-books and can see the new book tax for what it is” (2010). It is natural that reading digital text would be embraced by the contemporary society that is so dependent on new technologies. Sharing, collaboration and portability have turned out to be primary components of the present day world, so this boost in popularity of ebooks comes as no surprise (Reid 3). In fact, ebooks have even impacted my life, particularly as a teenager, when they got to be well known in Paraguay. For me, as an international student and chess player, travel has become a necessity. Thus, ebooks portability has become a crucial component of my studies during long voyages. In my academic career, ebooks have helped me by giving instantaneous access to information about math and physics that was not available for me in printed frame. Some people say that ebooks will soon surpass their printed …show more content…
In Flood’s article, Czeisler’s research suggests that reading ebooks can distort the sleeping patterns of the person because of the light emitted by the screen (2014). Moreover, some people have repeatedly complained that reading ebooks hurt their eyes, but recent technology from Apple has incorporated a night shift mode that minimizes these negative effects. Lynda Salmon’s research expresses a disadvantage of ebooks which tend to make the reader have “a more passive approach to understanding the story and fail to use personal decoding skills or context clues when introduced to unfamiliar words” (2013).
However, students have an advantage of having immediate access to interactive dictionaries in their electronic devices which, sometimes, can avoid the back pain from carrying a ton of “bricks”. Also, in his research, Marquis states that “those age 16 and older who own tablets or e-book reading devices are more likely than others to read for every reason: for pleasure, for personal research, for current events, and for work or school” (2013). Ebooks are accessible to everyone at any time; furthermore, ebooks now allow us to highlight sentences and look up words as we are
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. Nevertheless, he also like digital textbooks because it has a feature that allows to highlight and mark the
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. These things are discussed in the essay “Staying Awake’’ by Ursula K. Le Guin who uses the NEA essays “To Read or Not to Read’’ and “Reading at Risk’’ to support her argument that there is a decline in the amount of time that we are spending on reading and our ability to understand what it is that we are reading.
If you had the choice between your phone and a book, you would probably without thinking grab your phone. But what if you knew that reading is crucial to a future. In “Reading for pleasure Is in Painful Decline” by Stephen L. Carter and “Twilight of the books” by Caleb Crain, both authors argue about the state of reading in The United States. Within both passages they give valid points as to why and how the state of reading are negatively affecting the country. Stephen L. Carter represents how the decline in reading for fun is the main concern, while on the other hand, Caleb Crain shows it’s technology and social media that actually are the main contributors.
In a world dominated by technology, reading novels has become dull. Instead of immersing into books, we choose to listen to Justin Bieber’s new songs and to scroll through Instagram posts. We have come to completely neglect the simple pleasures of flipping through pages and getting to finally finish a story. Sherman Alexie and Stephan King’s essays attempt to revive this interest in books that has long been lost. They remind us of the important role that reading plays in our daily lives. “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” for instance, demonstrates how being literate saved the narrator from the oppressive nature of society. The author explains that even though he was capable of reading complex books at an astonishingly young
This source considers the issue of converting to digital books, specifically as it pertains to the effect that this change would have on the global environment. Although the research does recognize that there are disadvantages to not having a physical copy of a book and to abandoning certain platforms that do not transfer well to a digital form, overall, these researchers conclude that publishers should move towards digital products not only for the sake of cheaper long-run costs, but also for the good that going paperless can do for the environment. By displaying a series of graphs, as well as including multiple data sets, the text explains how e-books compare with printed texts; then, analysis of these facts is also included to show the reader the authors’ point.
First, he provides an overview of the history and development of the book as well as the development of reading. Carr analyzes and explains the effects of these developments on the individuals. Furthermore, he notes that the Internet recreates and alters a medium’s content by the use of hyperlinks, which ultimately distracts readers, and by separating the content into organized chunks. These characteristics make the content “searchable” which stimulates skimming behavior or superficial reading. As a result, readers retain less information due to the lack of deep, analytical reading. In addition, online texts often incorporate opinions, beliefs, or skewed viewpoints of certain topics, which can have negative effects on readers. Carr also addresses that some opponents believe that hardcopy reading was a result of “impoverished access” (111) and that the desire to use the fast paced web is a result of a quickening pace of life and work over the past few

Many people do not realize the benefits that reading a book entails; otherwise you would see more people racing to pick up their dusty old books as if it were one of Dr. Oz’s new miracle drugs. Instead people choose not to read because they are either impatient or they do not have the spare time available to allocate towards reading. The problem with people choosing not to read however, is that it’s more of the young population that’s not reading. In a study including more than “40 universities, foundations, business groups, and government agencies since 2004, found that almost half of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 never read books for pleasure” (Boston.com 5).
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
Reading has always been an important part of education and for some people, their daily routine. Because our world constantly advances technologically, the way people read has also changed; twenty years ago, the only source of reading was by reading a physical book, today, we can read from physical books as well as online and from our cellular devices. Although it is debated that reading from a device and reading from a physical book affects the educational benefits offered, statistics show that reading, all together, not only relaxes the mind, but also improves cognitive abilities and betters us as people in society. Annie Murphy Paul’s “Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer,” provides information that supports the effects of reading
With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students.
Books are meant to be read. Not so long time ago, everyone relies on books to gain knowledge and education. But in this era wherein everything are made digital, it is an interesting sight to see that people hold books more often than electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablets with e-books. A book mostly ends up untouched and gathering dust after being used.
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
Getting educated is one of the most important things in life when it comes to getting a good future. By developing good knowledge of schooling, it helps establish and maintain new information as needed throughout the real world. As books are one the essential tools in learning, eBooks are being used in a everyday lifestyle. Traveling to get away places from city life, helps give reading a comforting feel. Students that use print books are eventually going to use ebooks in the future. By educating students with ebooks, it is more efficient than carrying textbooks; ebooks is more convenient and reliable to read, write and store notes. Print books are being replaced by eBooks, it helps on keeping files together and it makes notes
...igitization.” This does not necessarily imply that printed books will altogether disappear, but that their appearance, usage and milieu will be repurposed. Therefore, it is only rational for stakeholders such as academicians, authors and publishers to envision the future of printed books in the digital age, so as to better anticipate the changes that are, without a doubt, destined to occur.
