The threats of virtual dimensions
The conceptions of security in the contemporary digital age are remarkably distinct from the traditional Cold War landscape. Technology and globalization are among the major contributors to the emergence of the new realm in security studies. The revolution of virtual dimensions has generated information technologies that provide people modern way to interact each other regardless the differences of place and time. People use computers, cell phones, mobile devices, and internet to do their business online, such as banking, shopping, or accessing government services. The digital infrastructures on which people rely in making all of their daily activities are possible to happen. This digital technology transcends state boundaries, works at an enormous pace, and outstrips traditional responses. Unfortunately, the reliance on cyberspace has brought not only great opportunities, but also new security threats.
Cyber threats range from sophisticated malicious software to disruptive online activity, including electronic espionage and cybercrime activities. Cybercrime underlines the role of digital technology in committing a crime. This includes crime in which the digital infrastructures as the target of criminal activity, such as hacking and
Given Canada’s substantial resources, it may become a major player in international cyber security. A robust civil society with considerable expertise in cyber security as well as its favorable diplomatic reputation could encourage Canada in building a comprehensive framework to address cyber threats on international stage. In addition, Canada should also ratify the Council of Europe 's cyber security convention. The convention offers a strong legal frameworks and platform for effective international cooperation on cyber security
Taylor, R. W., Fritsch, E. J., Liederbach, J., & Holt, T. J. (2011). Digital Crime and Digital Terrorism 2nd edition. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice Hall.
The convention, put into place in 2001, gives the 39 signatory countries guidelines to develop national legislation to combat cybercrimes and is also used as a framework for international co-operation between the countries who have signed (Government of Canada, “Cybercrime”). Furthermore, it demands that countries implementing the convention to give permission to law enforcement to order Internet service providers to monitor citizens’ online activities as well as outlaw discrimination based on religion or race, such as racism and xenophobia (Connolly). In 2015, the government of Canada ratified the convention, which strengthens Canada’s capacity to cooperate with international partners to fight cyber criminality by making it easier for the country to ask for help and assist other countries in their fight against cybercrimes (Connolly). Additionally, computer crimes generate new challenges for legislators and law enforcement agencies, such as the CSIS or local police station, that they have to face in order to keep Canada’s population secure (Valiquet).
Australia is dependent on technology, everything from state security, economics and information collaboration is more accessible resulting in an increased reliance on digital networks. The rapid increase in cyber activity has a symbiotic relationship with cyber crime. The evolving nature of cyber crimes are constantly leaving counter measures obsolete in the face of these new technologies. Australia takes insufficient action against cyber crime, inaction is based on Australia’s previous focus on counter-terrorism. This study will use the Australia’s National Security Strategy 2013 to show the increasing trend towards cyber security. Unfortunately the Australia Government is lacking in the presence of this growing phenomenon. Recently cyber crimes including attacks from Anonymous and Wiki-leaks prove that no network is completely secure. This study will conclude that the exponential growth of the Internet has resulted in an inability to properly manage regardless of the governmental strategies being implemented.
Throughout history women have always been treated differently. The Islamic religion and chinese society have helped develop the proper treatment of women .They've set guidelines for how women should be treated correctly and how women should act. In their views both sides must always follow the guidelines. These guidelines basically were like the first set of right s you could say for a woman.
The term “cyber terrorism” refers to the use of the Internet as a medium in which an attack can be launched such as hacking into electrical grids, security systems, and vital information networks. Over the past four decades, cyber terrorists have been using the Internet as an advanced communication tool in which to quickly spread and organize their members and resources. For instance, by using the instantaneous spread of information provided by the Internet, several terrorist’s groups have been able to quickly share information, coordinate attacks, spread propaganda, raise funds, and find new recruits for their cause. Instantaneous and unpredictable, the technological advantages these terrorists have obtained from using the Internet includes
The future of America is definitely affected by terrorism and terrorism has benefited from the new technologies that aid and speed up communication around the world. Terrorists can use tactics that they know and manipulate advanced technologies such as the internet. These technological advantages have certainly improved the capabilities of terrorist groups to plan and accomplish their operations. It also offers these terrorists the ability to affect communities faster and much more intensely than earlier terrorists. In order to reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, in regards to their threats, strategies and tactics, when dealing with the internet, a complete understanding of the nature of America’s enemies is necessary.
Criminals take advantage of weak cybersecurity measures in order to perform criminal acts and warfare over the Internet.
Privacy threats are currently the biggest threat to National Security today. The threats are not only concerning to the government, however. An alarming 92% of Americans are concerned that the power grid may be vulnerable to a cyber-attack (Denholm). Although this is a more recent development to the cyber threats we have experienced, this is not the first time that privacy threats have stepped into the limelight as people are forced to watch their every online move.
Society has become ever-increasingly dependent upon technology, more specifically, computers to conduct personal and business transactions and communications. Consequently, criminals have targeted these systems to conduct information and cyber warfare, which can include politically motivated attacks and to profit through ill-gotten means. In an article written by Koblentz and Mazanec (2013), cyber warfare is the act of disabling an enemy’s ability to use or obtain information, degrading its ability to make decisions, and to command its military forces. Additionally, information warfare is composed of cyber warfare and related to the protection, disruption, destruction, denial, or manipulation of information in order to gain a benefit through the technologies (Taddeo, 2012). Accordingly, as technology becomes readily available to various entities, the ability to conduct or perform warfare through technological means is multiplying.
Every day millions in some cases billions of dollars are made by businesses from income brought in by online sale of products and services. As businesses continually develop and expand their client base with online products and services so does the desire by criminals to exploit vulnerabilities in their e-commerce setup. The mass worldwide internet usage growth within the last 20 years has been “an approximate 16 million users in 1995 to an estimated 2,937 million in March of 2014” As the importance of e-commerce increases so does the need to protect the technological infrastructure that will carry out online transactions for each business regardless of its size. I will attempt to highlight and review the history of a few cyber crimes to show the progression of the crimes within the last 30-40 years. I also plan to review how the economy and consumers are impacted by cyber crimes. Finally I will make an effort to contribute with information gathering on how to lower the risk of a cyber attack from and individual user to a large scale business.
...communication technology have led to more dependency to internet connectivity. As world is changing into a global village cyber space has turned up the busiest and easily accessible market. Terrorists used this technique because it is very low cost, easy to manage or control and less chance to be apprehended. Terrorist easily achieve their goals by using this field of terrorism. Many states faced the menace of cyber terrorism which leads towards the disruption of their infrastructure, loss of data system jeopardizing their internal security and many more. Some states have taken strong measures against these attacks like US whose Department of Defense worked to tackle these threats. It is necessary that on international level states must cooperate with each other and promote those organizations which are formed only to stop the threat of cyber terrorism.
In today's society, many aspects of crime committed on a regular basis. Civilians take advantage of people all the time using online resources such as a fraudulent website requiring credit card information to get a free monthly trial. Other examples of cyber crimes are online chatting website, full of predators or websites needing a downloadable program that contains a hacking virus. Sadly, there are many cases of cyber crime all over the internet. The acts of cyber crimes are considered violent acts like any other. Every day citizens are constantly losing money and being victimized due to these fraudulent activities. Cyber crime, including fraud, identity theft, stalking, and hacking, is a growing problem which can be prevented by taking the proper precautions.
The world is in another cold war, except this time countries are battling for cyber supremacy. Cyberspace is a massive land of ever-changing technology and personal interaction (McGuffin and Mitchell 1). Cyberspace is not only a place where people post pictures and update their profile, but it also plays an enormous role in running a country. Advanced countries use computers to guide their military, keep track of citizens, run their power grids, and hold plans for nuclear devices and nuclear power. Risks to commercial and government concerns are now being noticed and many countries are taking actions to prevent such threats (McGuffin and Mitchell 1).
It is difficult to define cyberculture because its boundaries are uncertain and applications to certain circumstances can often be disputed. The common threads of defining cyberculture is a culture which has evolved and continues to evolve from the use of computer networks and the internet and is guided by social and cultural movements reflective of advancements in scientific and technological information. It is not a unified culture but rather a culture that exists in cyberspace and is a compilation of numerous new technologies and capabilities, used by diverse people in diverse real – world locations. Cyberculture, a twentieth century phenomenon, has brought challenges unlike any other that the United States has seen in the areas of cyber security and its impact on our most critical institutions. This presentation will focus on the aforementioned three entities where national security is in jeopardy, in part due to cyberculture and its intentional use for disruptive and destructive purposes.
There are different groups, from law enforcement agencies to the U.S. Secret Service, that are attempting to combat the problem through cooperation and preemptive efforts. If these groups combined with the public to protect themselves and the country from criminals that commit cybercrime, the nation’s network and technology servers would be much safer for technology users. Clearly, cybercrime is a problem because it puts internet users at risk of being taken advantage of or harmed. The advantages of technology and the internet have led more criminals to use cyberspace to commit crimes. The threat of cybercrime is increasing as globalization continues to spread across the world.
