Realizing at an early age the utmost difficulty of being admitted to the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to focus in my education and future endeavors. During my freshman year I entered the police explorer program. Such program rendered me with the tools to develop my social and leadership skills. I was completely convinced of becoming a law enforcement officer. I possessed all the skills, such as being: congenial, diligent and versatile. However, courses in science and math were interesting and straightforward. Therefore, I had to reconsider my future career. Such deed convinced me of applying to the B.S. Prelicensure program. A school where cultural diversity and research opportunities are available is the ideal place for me. Hence, I selected the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Nursing. In addition, the B.S. Pre licensure program triggered an interest since it allows individuals to engage with a diverse group of professionals in a medical setting. Being able to contribute to the community is pivotal to my success. Once obtaining a B.S. degree I intend to further my education. Anatole France once stated, “To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” I believe that my life of nursing and will research start in Baltimore, Maryland at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. I believe a whole new world will be open to me because I decided to live the life of bettering the lives of others. Similarly, to my mentor Zwade Marshall, I want to do so much for my community by using the greatest tools, which are education and medicine. Since I was in elementary school, a career path in the medical field always caught my eye. I would want to pursue a career as a nurse because I want a job that is inspiring, challenging, and rewarding; I want to be able to make a difference in people’s lives every day. My mother is a registered nurse and just from the way she talks about her patients, I can see how much gratification and fulfillment she feels from her job. From a young age, I have always wanted a job that would leave a lasting impression on others. After some research, volunteering, and years of thought in what career interests me the most in the medical field, I feel certain that nursing is a profession that will fit me well.

In my post secondary studies, many people are interested in what I want to do after I graduate and where I want to go in life. It is far rarer to have people ask the question of why. Why do I want to pursue a career in the medical field? Why do I want to spend my life helping people? Why do I want to attend the nursing program at Clarkson? My answer to the big question of why is not a simple one-faceted answer. I want to be a nurse for a myriad of reasons. In this reflection, I will touch on my long-lasting love for a career in medicine, my experience in school that solidified my desire to become a nurse, and the path that led me to apply to Clarkson College.
