Because Aurelia kept her faith, she was able to stay her original, sweet self, which made it easy to get along with others as well as obtain obedience. Without it, Aurelia would have given up right on the spot of ever making it through the struggles, and would have hurt herself, friends, and family. In the end, Aurelia’s great optimistic attitude led her to becoming very wise and experienced, and living a wonderful life after all the chaos she went through.

Another theme of this story is denial because both Gene and Finny experience a great deal of denial in the novel, but of different types. Gene tries his best to deny that he hurt Finny, and that he has a dark streak in his nature that causes him to lash out at innocent people.
Overall, Alexie shows us that the theme of assimilation plays a major part in the book, compared to the poem, which gives us little to no evidence of any assimilation at all. These two pieces of literature may have similar themes elsewhere, but as for assimilation, they are almost complete opposites.

Her answer also signifies that part of Tina’s sense of individuality stems from her feeling of being an outsider. This continues on as Tina explains how she herself does not belong to any of the cliques that make up her divided school, rather, her “clique” is her friendship with Alex. Her sense of individual at this time is defined by the friendship, as they are “different and the same,” ergo Tina defines her individuality with another individual (Kashyap 35). However, once Alex terminates their friendship, Tina struggles with keeping her identity now that a large component of it is no longer intact. This is not the end of her nature, however, as Tina continually identifies herself with who she is close to throughout the story (after Alex, Su Ming, eventually Hollis, and of course, Neil), which in turn leads to a broken identity as she sits alone on her bench.
