Acute renal failure also known as acute kidney injury occurs when there is a sudden decline in kidney function. During acute renal failure there is also an elevation in plasma creatinine and blood urea nitrogen level as there is a decrease in glomerular filtration and an accumulation of nitrogenous waste products in the blood (Huether & McCance, 2012, p. 754). The level of kidney injury is classified and diagnosis by using the acronym RIFLE. RIFLE stands for risk, injury, failure, loss and end-stage kidney disease. Furthermore, inability of distal convoluted tubules to excrete sufficient quantities of potassium, sodium, magnesium (Mg), chloride (Cl), urea, creatinine (Cr), alkaline phosphatase (Alk Phos), and phosphate (PO4) results in their elevation in the blood. His laboratory values reveal an increased of sodium value of 149 meq/L, an increase of potassium value of 5.4meq/L, increased chloride value of 116 meq/L, increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) serum of 143 mg/dL, and increased creatinine serum of 7.14 mg/dL. Four days after winning the Seagate 100 km Ultramarathon in Toledo, Ohio, I was hospitalized for 11 days with Acute Kidney Failure, a direct consequence of the race, possibly exacerbated by the 2400 mg of ibuprofen that I took during the race. In this article, I will describe my race and my hospitalization, discuss similar experiences of two runners after the 1994 Western States (WS) 100 Mile Endurance Run, and tell what I have learned that might be of general interest.
