What are the essential aspects of a self-directed, intrinsically motivated, active learner? Well first we have to identify the parts. A self-directed learner takes initiative, is persistent, accepts responsibility for their actions and choices, and is capable of self-discipline (Cobb, n.d.). A person who is intrinsically motivated is motivated because they enjoy the task. An active learning is a process, in which a learner is actively engaged through methods such as participating in discussions (businessdictionary.com, 2016).
So a learner who is actively engaged in their learning environment, enjoys learning, is persistent, responsible, and self-disciplined have the parts to be a self-directed, intrinsically motivated active learner.

I tend to take the initiative often and am always on the lookout for opportunities to improve myself or products and processes. I try to be proactive rather than reactive because it typically yields better results. I honestly believe that a person must own the actions and choices they make and accept the outcomes associated with it. I strive to stay engaged with my learning because I find it interesting and know that if I am no longer engaged then I will stop learning.
Weaknesses I have regarding self-motivation and being engaged is that I tend to have a cynical and/or downright defeatist attitude at times which makes motivation difficult. I will struggle with staying engaged because of a common issue among many people, time. I work a full time job typically (48-72 hours a week), have a wife and a 3 year old at home, and have numerous household projects and chores that call my attention every day. This lack of time makes me vulnerable to procrastination when it comes to school related tasks.

The first of the three, intrinsic motivation, explains that the individual does something purely out of enjoyment, and that the activity is gratifying in itself. Vallerand and O’Connor (1989) came up with a three part grouping of intrinsic motivation. There is intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation, which is doing something for the sensory pleasure it brings, like a person parachuting because they enjoy the sensation of falling through the air. Intrinsic motivation to know relates to doing an activity in order to learn. A person taking an online class to learn more on that field shows off this type of motivation. The last part of intrinsic motivation is to accomplish. This refers to an individual performing an activity for the pleasure of achievement, creating, or to surpass oneself. When a person is focused more on the process of achievement rather than the actual achievements results, they are intrinsically motivated through accomplishment (Vallerand and Grouzet, 2001). Extrinsic motivation is present whenever there some kind of external factors waiting for the individual at the end of the activity. There are four different forms of extrinsic motivation, which are defined by the degree to which the motivation is self-determined (Lapointe and Perreault, 2013). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)

Curiosity has always kept my mind wandering and looking for new things to learn and discover. I often find myself looking deeper into simple things to find bigger and better. Being curious is what keeps me coming back to learn more. If I wasn’t curious about what I was going to learn or what’s next I would get bored. Without curiosity, we would still be stuck in the 1800s and there would be no discoveries or advancements in modern day life. Being an independent woman I find it easy not to depend on others and often just being able to depend on myself to get things done. One skill I hope to fully acquire is self-management. Self-management is crucial in order to be successful, especially in an online campus. There are a few reasons I say self-management is important. One reason I believe self-management is significant is the fact that it encompasses many things, from putting time aside to do the work, to follow up with professors and classmates with any questions or concerns you may have and making your education a priority. Another reason I believe self-management is important is that it will be used in more than just schooling, it will be used in everyday living, and most importantly in the workplace. Within self-management, there is goal-setting and managing time which will be used in many cases. I often find myself slacking or becoming off task, but with a little motivation and concentration, I believe I have what it takes to master this important skill before

The article lists the ABCs of self-regulated learning, it says that attitudes, beliefs, cognitive strategies, domain knowledge, external support, and flexibility are essential self-regulated learning to be effective. If the student’s attitudes about learning are not good then they will not grasp anything because they are not being positive about learning. Being positive helps the student to be confident and enthusiastic about learning, this will help them not give up when faced with a difficult task. This is often a big problem for students with exceptional education needs they tend to have a negative outlook on education. Helping and encouraging students so they can have more positive attitude on learning is really important so they can be successful in school.
If I were to teach a critical thinking and practical reasoning course, I would emphasize active listening, problem-based learning, and Seize the moment/Gestalt/ah ha. Active listening not only teaches students how to listen, but also how to transmit the fact they are listening to others. I would prepare by familiarizing myself with an active teaching curriculum. Then I would practice with friends of friends for honest feedback.
One contributing factor towards student success is student motivation. Motivation is reading unassigned books out of class that relate to the class subject matter, just to expand his or her knowledge. The need or want type of actions a persons’ mentality is, to reach a personal goal or objective of some sort. People’s motivational purpose in school can range from, higher earning potential, more job stability, greater benefits, and even just to gain more knowledge. The learning segment is designed to enhance the focus learner’s ability to identify and cite specific details from an informational text. By becoming more adept in his ability to identify the main idea and the supporting details of a text, the focus learner will enhance his skill of reading for a purpose in future academic and personal settings. Today’s generation of children and young adults grew up with technology access easily available to them. They carry cell phones that allow instant communication with their friends and instant access to the internet. Research to them means, pulling up an internet browser, typing in a subject and being presented with thousands of choices from which they can choose. Traditional teacher led instruction does not promote the interactive type of learning that technology has allowed students to use. Today’s teacher must learn to include a more interactive style of teaching that the technologically savvy student is wired to understand and enjoy. Interactive based learning engages student’s interests, improves student comprehension, and increases student achievement. Using the range of techniques offered by interactive based learning, it will drastically change the overall student performance.
I think all students yearn to learn. We as future teachers need to motivate students with learning, exploring, investigating, discovering and inquiring. Together you will be learning and teaching.
