Thesis statement
Academic success by students can be attributed to a lot of things most importantly the efforts of the students. This can be achieved through the setting of goals which provide the basic motivation and the desire to move ahead. The learner is expected to perfect his learning skills identifying the best learning style, writing skills, and reading skills. It is also important to keep in mind academic integrity as it is the guiding principle for success both in school and in the career ahead.

In high school, teachers encourage the use discussions, study guides, and constantly checking with students' progress as a way of encouraging learning. As one advance in school (college), most of the learning responsibility falls on the student, therefore, it is vital to understand the learning process. The learning cycle has four very critical steps: preparing, absorbing, capturing and reviewing. Learning an academic subject involves fully comprehending it to the point of applying it various situations that are meaningful. This is contrary to memorizing that only fits the situation it was created for. Different students have different learning styles, each style being effective to different learners. It is also important to note that lecturers also use different styles of teaching which may or may not go well with ones learning the style. There are several learning styles that students can use including Verbal, visual, rhythmic, interpersonal, logical naturalist among others. The primary function of university resources is to aid the learning process ensuring that students become successful. Some of the common examples of resources inside the university include library books, student advocacy offices, among others. The library provides the best source of learning materials to complement what is taught in class. Many universities also have embraced technology providing online portals where students can get lecture materials, assignments and test practices to help them in achieving their goals. Lecturers, friends, and classmates too can be a very good source of learning materials. Educational websites and blogs also have created a hub for academic sources making learning materials
According to the learning styles theory there are three main learning styles. The first is visual. This is a student who prefers to see the information through notes, pictures, or demonstration. Learning is a process that individuals face every day, whether it is in classroom, at work, or surfing the Internet, but each person has a particular style in which they prefer to accomplish this learning. An individual’s learning style is the manner in which that person finds learning to be the easiest for them, and while many individuals have a primary style, everyone uses all the learning styles in various combinations throughout their day and life.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.

A big component of my learning style is hands-on experience; learning while doing. This usually involved someone with more experience instructing me as I performed the task. Through the hands-on approach, I picked-up the knowledge and gained proficiency as I went along. My learning style also involved standard classroom instruction, which usually meant listening to lectures and taking notes. My note taking was not the best so in order to make up for what I lacked in note taking, I would read the textbooks repeatedly until I understood what I was reading.
