Great discussion on plagiarism! I like that you included creating documents with your own knowledge to avoid plagiarism. This reminded me of how some nurses copy other nurses documentation of a patient. This is a great example of how academic dishonesty can lead to nursing dishonesty. If you are copying someone's paper work on a patient, this is nursing dishonesty and can lead to a person losing their job. More importantly, this person is creating fraudulent documentation, much like plagiarism. This nurse is taking someone's work and passing it as their own. If a nurse or a student can create their own views and thoughts, academic and nursing integrity can be
maintained.
Through centuries nurses were given the title “Caregivers”. Unlike some doctors, nurses actually care for their patients, not necessarily saying doctors do not; they both just have a different way of caring. Yes, doctors cure illnesses, but nurses are just as important because they help with the healing process. Most nurses can have the same exact education or knowledge as a medical physician but the only thing individuals see is a name tag with either the acronym CNA, LPN, R.N. and PH.D. Of course PH.D will get all the credit, seeing as how nurses do not exactly diagnose patients. A nurse could just become a doctor but there are different aspects of each title. Nurses take instructions from a higher administrator, which is sometimes a doctor. What needs to be known is doctors are not the only ones that stress and have rules to abide by. Nurses have ethical codes, daily ethical dilemmas, morals, and ridiculous distress, but some of these examples differ with country, state, and hospital. If nurses are capable, then they should be given the opportunity to make medical decisions or diagnosis in critical situations.
This essay will take inspiration from a theoretical character named Sam (see appendix 1).Sam is a minor aged fifteen who, after a head injury whilst watching a game of football attends her local accident and emergency department. Whilst in the company of her mother she initially denies the possibility of a pregnancy but when taken to for an x-ray and separated from her mother admits that she could be pregnant. Sam’s case highlights issues of confidentiality, consent and disclosure of information.
In a health care profession, people look up to those providing care and need to establish a trusting relationship with them. Since nurses are at the forefront of care in a hospital, it is crucial for nurses to show and have integrity in the hospital setting. As nurses, we are the person that is in constant interaction with the patient and the last line before administering or doing any care to the patient. Nurses develop integrity in many ways, through given situations and the need to stand up for what is right for the patient. The core value of integrity can be used in the clinical setting now as sophomore students and throughout our time as a nurse. The core concept of integrity is holding true to what is right for the patient and providing the most beneficial care to the patient.

According to the University Faculty and Staff website article dated October 13, 2011, The United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity (ORI) found Scott Weber a University of Pittsburg nursing faculty member guilty of plagiarism and falsifying data on two academic journal submissions and two federal grant applications (Barlow, 2011). In the stated case, Mr. Weber copied large amounts of text from previous studies without proper citation and falsified data table values represented in the journal articles and grant applications (Barlow, 2011). In order to properly learn more about plagiarism, it is important to appreciate the process of distribution and creation of ideas in the university. All knowledge is developed from preceding knowledge. As we read, revise, execute, research, and collect perspectives, we are building on other people’s thoughts. While drawing on other peoples thoughts and ideas, we manage to develop our own. In this base therefore, students should not shy away from using the work of others. Instead, they should learn how to avoid plagiarism.
I really enjoyed reading your post, and above everything, that you mentioned the 8 moral principles from our textbook. Understanding and applying them is tantamount to ethical practice. Of course, one can be more knowledgeable of one or other principle, thus serving as cornerstone to one’s nursing philosophy. Technological innovations, like the cellular telephone, have provided students with new methods of cheating. Plagiarism has also been influenced through technologies, specifically internet companies have emerged that provide unethical solutions to academic assignments.
Honesty and integrity are two major core Catholic and humanist values that many students in modern times seem to lack. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, honesty is defined as "the quality of being fair and truthful." Honesty plays a huge role in our society and daily lives. Honesty is a key characteristic that makes up a person, and defines who they truly are. Usually, if a person is very honest, which according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary means, “the quality of being honest and fair.” As you can see, the definition of honesty and integrity go hand in hand. Just as Spencer Johnson tells us, “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” Without honesty, there is absolutely no integrity. In the past few years, many major corporations conducted tests to determine how much of the world’s population was considered, “honest.” WalletTest.com conducted an experiment in which one hundred wallets were left on the streets on purpose, filled with a good amount of cash, and a picture identification card to explicitly show who the wallet belonged to. Of those one hundred wallets, seventy four of them were returned and twenty six were not. The sample of people they used were of mixed gender, age, and race, giving a good testing sample. The results were good, showing that most people were honest, and the honest people outnumbered the dishonest people nearly three to one. Honesty and integrity does not only play a large role in daily life situations, however. Honesty and integrity play a large role in academics in different levels of expertise: Elementary, High School, and College.
Academic knowledge is the basis on which future prosperity, and financial security has been determined. As a consequence, students feel inclined to perform above average in school. Now, as students perform less and less, they sink to obtain good grades by cheating. This method to acquire the desired grades will only harm the student, instead of the imagined result. Prompted by a child’s inability to perform basic tasks throughout his education , academic cheating spawns numerous negative consequences.
The specific issue in questions is whether a nurse should keep the truth from their patient about their illness by respecting the wishes of the patient family or abiding by The Code of Ethics for Nurses and revealing the truth to the patient. The Code of Ethics for Nurses expresses the values and ethics of the nursing profession by stating that: Patients have the moral and legal right to determine what will be done with their own person; to be given accurate, complete, and understandable information in a manner that facilitates an informed judgment; to be assisted with weighing the benefits, burdens, and available options in their treatment, including the choice of no treatment; to accept, refuse, or terminate treatment without deceit, undue influence, pressure, intimidation, or penalty; and to be given necessary support throughout the decision-making and treatment process (The American Nurses Association, 2011). Unfortunately, truth telling to any type of patient is a common ethical dilemma: to tell the truth or to not tell the truth is the main question. For example teachers and principals in an academic institute are very strict towards this matter so, it can lead to many consequences such as suspension, failure or even the risk of being expelled from a school and possibly even a school board. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
