Experience with Academic Counselors In my four years at UALR, I have had three Academic Counselors to work with. My first was in the Office of Admissions before I declared my major, and the other two were counselors within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. I received invaluable assistance and knowledge from each of these people, and they each helped me along a different part of my academic career. I would not be where I am today, ready to graduate, without their help. Whenever I first arrived at UALR, I knew immediately that I wanted to be within the – then – College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (now College of Communications and Social Sciences). My first advisor directed me toward classes that would help me decide where I wanted to be within that college (trying out intro classes for each field of study). She also pointed me toward programs and clubs that suited my interests, and encouraged me to get involved with students that held the same passion as myself. This was a good start to my journey through college, and I am very appreciative of the advice she offered. …show more content…
The counselors here first made sure that I was ready to pursue the degree, and laid out the courses I would need to take over the next two years. They made suggestions about electives and minors that would maximize my professional skillset, and I’m very happy that I took their word. I ended up with a minor in Marketing, which I found goes well with Sociology, as they told me it
A professional school counselor is skilled and trained to use his/her best judgment when it comes to students’ rights and confidentiality. One should behave as a professional at all times and be mindful of their behavior. One not only have to be aware of professional values they should also be knowledgeable of applying these standards as they apply to the role of the school counselor. The professional school counselor is responsible for removing barriers to learning and to advocate for change for all students. In the case study assigned for review, I will examine ethical violation as it contains to student rights, confidentiality and professionalism relationships. Counselors who counsel children and adolescent under the age of 18 or adults who do not have the legal capacity to care for themselves will more than likely experience conflict between what they consider to be their ethical or more obligations and what they consider to be their ethical or moral obligations and what the law dictates that they must do (Salo, 2015). Counselors provide services to minors, who lack legal competency, are obligated to pay attention to the legal rights of parents and guardians. They protect them from harm and take the steps to prevent abuse or neglect of these clients. According to the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, any minor under the age of 18 years old, have the right to consent to counseling without consent of the parent or guardian. Balancing the legal rights of parents or guardian and the
As I began to read Davis and Meier's (2011) The Elements of Counseling, I was immediately intrigued by the title of Chapter Five, “Counselor, Know Thyself”. In the title, I made intuitive connections with many important concepts imbedded in Philosophy. As an example, In Plato’s Phaedrus (2003), the master protagonist, Socrates, explains to Phaedrus that he has no time to explain trivial things, “…and the reason, my friend, is this: I am not yet able as the Delphic inscription has it, to know myself; so it seems to me ridiculous, when I do not yet know that, to investigate irrelevant things.” As I reflect on the handout Competencies in Professional Counseling and Related Human
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.

When I began doing my fieldwork hours at El Camino in the fall, I grew a deep appreciation for the welcoming environment the First Year Experience (FYE) office had. Through various counseling sessions I got to observe, I witnessed first-hand the importance the role of the community college counselor has on its students. Thought the group of students who entered were different than the previous class, the same issues and obstacles were being mentioned to the FYE counselors. However, the one obstacle that kept repeating itself was that of financial literacy. Internship Site

For this paper, I chose the case of the Vietnamese student, Lee, from our chapter 4 reading. The case describes Lee as a student who is seeing the school counselor because of some academic difficulties that he is having (Corey, Schneider-Corey, & Callanan, 2011, 2007). Lee is described as slow and deliberate in his style of conversation. The school counselor quickly assigns him to a remedial speech class. During a session with the counselor, Lee tells her that his father wants him to major in pre-med when he applies to college. Stacy, the counselor, gives Lee a homework assignment of telling his father that he no longer wants to apply to college and that he wants to “follow a direction that appeals to him” (Corey, Schneider-Corey,
A career that I have been interested for a very long time is in Psychology, which is to be a Counseling Psychologist. To be a Counseling Psychologist research is needed to receive a clear understanding of this specific career. For example, it is valuable to know what are the job requirements/duties, being paid hourly or salary, and if it is required to relocate. However, it is very important for me to know does it fit my personality, the exact year of graduation, what schools will I attend, how long it would take to complete my education and how much will my education cost. These are all-important material to be familiar with and are a journey that I am ready to take and experience.
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) supports school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, personal/social and career development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society.

Academic advising is one of the most important activities the academic staff engage in at AFMS School. My previous experience in counseling encompassed three different aspects. The first is Decision Counseling which involves leading individuals in giving their lives to Christ. Next, Commissioned Lay Counseling assists in leading individuals to view life issues from a Christ-centered perspective. Lastly, Coaching consists of leading individuals to have a different view on past negative life experiences. Functioning in all three capacities has shown me the need others have for understanding and coping with difficult issues and has also shaped my desire to further my education and better equip myself with the knowledge needed to help the hurting and the lost. Having first-hand experience with some wanting to get to know and experience Christ
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
