As a student entering the world of AP, it is crucial that you comprehend the challenge ahead of you. Prior to enrolling in Mrs. Walton’s AP English course, I was unaware of the elements of literature and what it truly meant to analyze and comprehend a literary work. The AP Lit. course has allowed me to perceive everything around me with a new perspective; is it symbolic, is this a form of satire, what is the true meaning beyond the surface? In preparation for the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition exam, high school students must read many kinds of literature during the year-long course to familiarize themselves with different time periods, movements, philosophies, and genres. Advanced Placement students must learn to think critically, and be ready to find, analyze, and express literary connections through written analysis. The biggest challenge of teaching and learning Advanced Placement English is the difficulty covering the entire scope of literature in two semesters. Twentieth century literature often gets neglected. The pace of the curriculum can also limit the creativity of lesson planning and evaluation. Many teachers rely heavily on lecture, discussion, and a traditional analysis paper.

Literary Analysis Anthem and Station Eleven are both dystopian novels. Both books relate to the citizen having little to no freedom with the government that is controlling them. Anthem was written by Ayn Rand, she wrote about how the government in this area controls what each person is destined to be whether you like it or not. Whereas in Station Eleven the world has practically ended due to a deadly flu virus and, somehow, ended up with a man as many know as the Prophet attempting to rule the word. Both dystopian novels have a very unfair dictatorship type government.

A former English major- for nineteen days that is; by the name of Mark Danner, gave a commencement speech to a graduating class of the Department of English at the University of California. Starting off with a familiar and dreaded question, he asks the students “What are you going to do with that?” A question that has been repeatedly asked by anyone that knows you are an English major. Retorting to his own question, he states that by striving to be an English major, they will do questioning of their own, but also be questioned. In today’s society everyone hustling for a college degree is pursuing fields that will grant instant satisfaction in the job field, upon graduating. Unfortunately, for Liberal Arts or English majors, the options do not come quite as abundantly.
In the short story, “Hills like White Elephants”, by Ernest Hemingway, is based on determination to abort a child. Hemingway introduced the readers to Jig a naïve girl, who lacks self-confidence and an American man who is self-indulgence. Jig and her partner made an adult decision to conceive a child, but are not capable of keeping the unborn infant. Jig is in a position of contemplation, where she has to decide her own seed over infatuated love because she does not want her decision to affect their relationship. The man she has unconditionally love for does not condone to her pregnancy. The American man specifies the abortion as a “simple operation”. He tries to persuade Jig into the operation, but does not realize life will not remain the same after the surgery is complete. Hemingway helps readers visualize the situation of abortion by comparing Jig pregnancy to the scenery and fictitious objects.
It is that time of year once more, exams, graduation, packing up the room, but in a moment such as this I can take time to reflect upon what I’ve accomplished throughout my senior year. In just a short 180 days, so much has happened. Sports seasons came and went, dances, school functions, but one thing remained a constant, AP work. I remember at the end of last year that I didn’t want to take AP literature and composition, I wanted to just be able to coast through my senior year, get by with minimal effort and besides, I would never be any good at the material anyway. That is when my parents stepped in and forced me to take it, as well as AP United States Government and Politics, and it may have been the greatest interception of all time. I knew the course was going to be difficult, it is Mr. Primmer for crying out loud. But, it was difficult with a purpose, a drive to succeed was behind every single assignment and a stride for improvement behind every single grade. I learned a lot about myself this year in this class. I learned that maybe I should have a little more faith in myself, I can accomplish things when I really try. I learned that I do not like analyzing poetry but I do like reading Shakespeare.
The five of the literary works that were introduced and explained throughout the course of a few days, all conveyed extremely distinct, yet deep messages that will make the audience analyze these influential pieces even further. And from the presentations, readers can then compare and contrast these various books, though the ideas and writings expressed by the diverse authors that created them, in which most of their personal notions and experiences inspired them to set free certain feelings that was eventually incorporated into the form of American literature.

Throughout the semester, we have read and studied novels that are placed into the “Young Adult Literature” category. Out of the four novels that were read and discussed, they all had their own plot and conflict that the protagonist had to struggle with. While three out of the four novels had a male set as the main character when it came to the novel with a female as the protagonist it gives the reader a much different feel and vibe for as to how the novel is going to carry on. Since the beginning of time, there has been a distinct line drawn between what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman. This had a serious effect on how these novels were written and how masculinity/femininity are portrayed in Young Adult Literature.

Being able to reflect on the entire semester of American Literature, I am not only confident of my growth as a reader, writer, and speaker, but also proud. The progress made from the beginning of the year is vast. My annotations have grown from being short and metacognitive to lengthy and critical, my speaking abilities have shifted to allow a greater analysis of texts in class, and my writing has grown in diction, syntax, organization, and idea development. When I came into English 11, I was used to low expectations in all forms; simple and few annotations, basic and short essays, and infrequent classroom conversations were all norms of my previous english classes. Consequently, my ability to partake in the aforementioned activities were unpolished
