A well-written report and a poorly written report can make a huge difference in the outcome. When writing a report it is highly important to get the main facts/information. The saying sometimes less is more can easily apply to reports. I am going to choose the impact a written report vs a poor report can have on a judge. As we know a judge is someone who gives the final verdict in the court proceedings. The judge is given all evidence from the defense and the plaintiff. He or she then goes and reviews all evidence. Evidence can be anything from police reports, photographs, statements etc. However, a poorly written report can highly affect the impact of the court proceeding. Yes, we understand people make mistakes with words etc. It causes a problem when words or grammar is spelled incorrectly and the report is not understandable. Outside of grammar and proper spelling the main point is needed. You can write a 3 page report and forget to add the guy was found stabbed in the back while his wife held the knife. Therefore, the police officer puts individual was found with stab wounds to the back. But forgets to mention that his wife was holding the knife. This can make HUGE difference because the wife can be a suspect but eventually be cleared. By having a poorly written report can make the difference of someone being convicted vs being set free. A well-written report should include the main information of the incident that occurred. Like in elementary school we were thought the five questions. Who? What? Where? Why? How? I am saying that this is something that should be incorporated into a well-written police report. This will not only answer the main questions primarily asked it will show how detailed the police officer was in writing the report. A well-written report will have good punctuation and grammar.
