A prevailing truism is that nothing possesses the ability originate from its opposite or exist in the same entity as its opposite simultaneously. Life and death cannot survive together, ignorance cannot stem from knowledge. Yet good and evil, commonly assumed to be antitheses, harbor the capacity to subsist in the presence of one another. Moreover, the two ideas exist in all actions and humans themselves. Due to this coexistence, good and evil simply cannot occupy absolute definitions, but rather must be defined in comparison to one another. Thus, as elucidated by Gardner’s Grendel, Shakespeare’s Richard III, and Moore and Lloyd’s V for Vendetta, all people must experience a moral struggle because of the equivoque of good and evil notions. However not only this characteristic of the two ideas, but also the hubris of human beings is a factor that contributes to the struggle for morality as it is human nature to do that which is in one’s own self-interest.
In Genesis, Adam and Eve, the first parents, act in both good and evil manners. Biblically, good is defined as being pious and subservient to God and his sanctity, which Adam and Eve do eagerly. Yet, they eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, from which God forbids them to eat. Although Adam and Eve are supposedly ethical people, their actions opposed God’s ideals of good. Conveying the same interconnectedness of good and evil, the Shaper of Grendel tells apparently righteous stories of the feats of the Danes, yet at the same time he tells of tragic stories and death. As a result of this moral endeavor arising from both ambiguity about right and wrong and the tendency to act in favor of oneself, the concept indirectly projects the thoughts that the struggle is beneficial, and perhaps even imperative. As Williams explains, one who lives with a clear “budget of do’s and don’ts...wonders whether a life lived in subservience to this code could be seen as full, mature, and abundant” (Williams). Living such a categorical, unconditional life simply is not satisfying and inhibits one’s capacity to experience all that life offers. In order to lead a full and interesting life, uncertainty, as such existing in the ideas of good and evil, must prevail.

An action that is life preserving and sacrificial is believed to be “good” in our modern society. King Hrothgar’s wife, Wealtheow, is a complete representation of this concept. When tensions run high between the two kings, King Hygmod offers his daughter as “Wealtheow, or holy servant of common good” to King Hrothgar to preserve their peaceful environment (Gardner 100). On the right, is good; the value which is popularly believed to be the correct alignment for which a person should live their life according to. On the left, is evil; that which is the cause of most human misery, and prevents peace on earth. In John Gardner’s book Grendel, the retelling of the ages old story Beowulf, further blurs the line between good and evil. Circumstance and perhaps a confused view of reality allow the monster, Grendel, to conceivably defend his evil beliefs. Many people have different views on the moral subject of good and evil or human nature. It is the contention of this paper that humans are born neutral, and if we are raised to be good, we will mature into good human beings. Once the element of evil is introduced into our minds, through socialization and the media, we then have the potential to do bad things. As a person grows up, they are ideally taught to be good and to do good things, but it is possible that the concept of evil can be presented to us. When this happens, we subconsciously choose whether or not to accept this evil. This where the theories of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke become interesting as both men differed in the way they believed human nature to be. Hobbes and Locke both picture a different scene when they express human nature.

Good and evil can be summed up as a difference between rational and irrational thoughts, with the former being related to “good” and the ladder to “evil”. This is a view shared by Immanuel Kant and his Categorical Imperative. In the movie Schindler’s List, we are presented with two individuals, Oskar Schindler, who by the end of the movie displays characteristics of a man following rational thoughts, doing acts that he would want to become universal maxims. The argument as to whether humans are born good or evil is one that been philosophized for hundreds of years by many of the world’s greatest minds. Are humans born with a particular set of qualities that define their character and how they are perceived in society? Are they born with the power to choose between good and evil? The idea of human nature relies on the theory that there is an engrained set of features which are shared by all humans—components that determine the way people reason and behave. John Locke and Thomas Hobbes are two opposing philosophers who have devoted many years to studying this subject. For Locke, the state of nature— the original condition of all humanity before civilization and order were established —is one where man is born free, equal and have rights that others should respect, such as the right to live and the right to liberty. These rights were essentially derived from natural law— an unwritten law in which every man must judge his/her own actions against. For Hobbes, however, the state of nature is one of constant war; solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short ; it is, in Hobbes’ mind, civilization that separates humans from their primitive state. Hobbes believed that an individual’s only drive in life is to serve themselves above all else. In order to obtain this goal, humans must use conflict as a means of self-gain to take what they desire for their self-serving nature. The abstract concept of evil has vastly transformed throughout human history, ranging for the supernatural and mystical to the very humans amongst whom we live. In modern times, evil has become an entirely ambiguous term. Who is evil? What is evil? Men like Adolph Hitler and Saddam Hussein have been garnered with the term ‘evil’ for their atrocities against fellow humans. Now it seems evil has a solely human significance; when a person violates the individual rights of others on a massive scale, he/she is evil. In Shakespeare’s time – the Elizabethan era – evil had a similar, but somewhat altered connotation in the human mind. Evil was an entity that violated the English Christian monarchial tradition. Therefore, a man such as Claudius, from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, a cold-blooded murderer and a ruthless manipulator, who uses “rank” deeds to usurp the thrown is in direct violation with the Elizabethan societal norms, and hence he is an evil character.
The following analysis deals with the nature and source of evil and whether, given our innate motives and moral obligation, we willingly choose to succumb to our desires or are slaves of our passion. From this argument, I intend to show that our human nature requires that we play into our desires in order to affirm our free will. This is not to say that our desires are necessarily evil, but quite the opposite. In some sense, whatever people actually want has some relative value to them, and that all wanted things contain some good. But given that there are so many such goods and a whole spectrum of varying arrangements among them, that there is no way we can conceive anything as embodying an overall good just because it is to some degree wanted by one or a group of persons. In this light, there arises conflict which can only be resolved by a priority system defined by a code, maybe of moral foundations, which allows us to analyze the complexities of human motivation. I do not intend to set down the boundaries of such a notion, nor do I want to answer whether it benefits one to lead a morally good life, but rather want to find out how the constructs of good and evil affect our freedom to choose.
