After reading ‘The Murder of Helen Jewett” it gave me insight on how crime in New York City was in the 1830’s and another view on how life for men and women differed. The book starts off talking about Dorcas Doyen famously known as Helen Jewett and how she was highly thought of but then the news comes out of nowhere with several stories about her past some twisted to make her seem as bad as a prostitute who has bounced around a few times could be seen. But her actual story was that she was born in 1814 in Temple, Maine to a regular working family. She lost both of her parents at a young age her mother died when she was at the early ages of her life and he father who was an alcoholic died shortly after her mother. She was put in a home, orphaned
The author Jane Yolen said, “Literature is a textually transmitted disease, normally contracted in childhood.” This disease she referenced I never seemed to contract. My experiences with literature, both reading, and writing, have been dull, to say the least. There was never anything that stuck out to me or had a changing impact on my perception of literature. Literature was a job that I had to show up to and pay attention to when I was told This was true until I began reading a biography about one of my favorite artists. It was a book about Selena, who's full name is Selena Quintanilla Perez, and was written by her husband, Chris Perez. As I was reading this book, I experienced the first time that a piece of literature can have an impact on
Before Kari and her husband knew who took their child the police showed up at their place as said before. He was just angry at what he was just told about his wife. So he raped her. While raping her, he said “this is what you like right. You like when men just take it from you. Go inside of you raw and dry. This s*** feels good to you Kari? That’s not even your name you lied to me. You disgust me. When I get my daughter back you’ll never see her again, you’re pathetic.” Then after that he left her where she was and ignored her for the remainder of time their daughter was gone. This goes back to her trying to get over ever bad thing that happens to her. And out of nowhere her husband, the person that’s supposed to keep her safe and protect her from all evil did the worst thing ever. Something she’s been through multiple of times and never wanted to go through it again. She degraded herself by running from her and past and never looking back. She changed her name out of shame. She didn’t want to be the person she was in the

Celia, A Slave is a story of an unjust murder trial and how the jurisdiction ended the accused slave’s life. During this time, Missouri was divided by people against slavery and people for it. The actions executed during Celia’s trial portray that slaves’ trials were unjust. This story shows that the actions from the defendant were not enough and were going against the actions of those with a political agenda. There were laws in effect which would have helped her case but since there was a war looming over the judge in charge saw to it that her trial be as clean as possible. Celia’s actions were motivated by years of suffering and most importantly George’s ultimatum, whereas William Hall’s actions were driven to reduce the risk of a political

In the film Romasanta, the werewolf Manuel Romasanta had some similarities to the werewolf Peeter Stubbe. In the film, Manuel would kill men, women and even children but he mainly targeted women. Peeter Stubbe main target were women and children, “he had murdered thirteen young children, and two goodly young women big with child” (pp.15). Another correlation these two werewolves had were they both killed their child. In the film, Manuel had stabbed and eaten his young daughter, while Peeter killed his son by striking him and then “ate the brains out of his head” (pp. 16). Lastly, both werewolves would sleep with their victims before murdering them. Manuel would seduce his victims by killing off their husbands and writing letters stating that

A murder in itself is a last resort that a man can turn to when walking down the path of revenge. What drives a man to a path that leads him to end the life of another? Even though no reason is justifiable for that action, one would believe the motive behind it would have been extraordinary. However, Montressor, who is depicted as a perfect killer, is uncertain of the very motive that led him to carry out such deliberate murder. “THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge”(Poe 1). Montressor never species any reason other than the ambiguous “thousand injuries” and “when he ventured
