Poor decisions in life can impact oneself and others in ways one doesn't expect. As evidenced by ¨Romeo and Juliet¨ and ¨Sound of thunder¨ by William Shakespeare and Ray Bradbury choices one makes can cause severe mental harm by spawning many negative feeling like guilt, rage, ego and excess pride.
In the book sound of thunder, the character Eckles makes many decisions which impact the outcome of his adventure to the past. When he is adventuring in the ancient safari and looks at what kind of a monster he has chosen to hunt, he says¨Get me out of here¨¨I was never like this before. I was always sure I’d come through alive. I had good guides, good safaris, and safety. This time, I figured wrong. I’ve met my match and admit it. This is too much for me to get hold of.” this Quote shows how much he regrets his decision to choose an animal which he is not even sure that he could kill. Eckels realizes that he is a fool to think that hunting beings from hundreds of millions of years would be as easy as his previous hunts which included modern-day creatures like a tiger or a wild boar. He is very scared because of the realization that he would not be able to kill this animal

instead this animal would kill him, we can infer from his decision that Eckles is a very timid person, and hugely relies on is companions while hunting. When Eckles notices something strange about the atmosphere after coming back to the present he reads the signboard and notices that the spellings of various words have changed that he has killed a prehistoric butterfly, he does this"Eckels gave out a long, low cry as if in pain. He dropped to his knees. He tried to pick up the green and gold butterfly with shaking fingers. "Can't we," he pleaded to the world, to himself, to the officials, to the Machine, "can't we take it back, can't we make it alive again? Can't we start over? Can't we..." Through this passage, we can infer that Eckels realizes his mistake and regrets his decisions of ever using the time machine and going off the path during the hunt. These decisions change Eckles life and the Life of everyone on earth. His careless decision of going off the path has cost him his life because Travis kills him in the end as a punishment for the damage he has caused the world. Another example of poor decision making is from Scarlet Ibis in which the brother of a special needs child accidentally shortens his brother's life just by making bad choices," The knowledge that Doodle's and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened.
I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far back with a wall of rain dividing us. The drops stung my face like nettles, and the wind flared the wet glistening leaves of the bordering trees. "The author forgets that his brother is very fragile and that rain and cold can kill him. This decision made in a split second and out of cruelty cost him his brother's life, he will never forget his loss. In the book Rome and Juliet, we see some other example of poor decision making," I pray thee, good Mercutio, let’s
retire: The day is hot, the Capulets abroad, And, if we meet, we shall not scape a brawl; For now, these hot days is the mad blood stirring. "says Benvolio, If Mercutio has listened to this warning by Benvolio, perhaps he might still be alive and would never have had to fight Tybalt who kills him. This is an outcome of poor decision making by Mercutio. In conclusion, decision making should be taken seriously and not left to chance. The world would not have changed, Eckles, Mercutio, and Doodle would not be dead if they all took responsibility and considered their choices clearly. The Decisions made by people affect them and sometimes others more strongly than they could have imagined.
What happens when predators become prey? Does the prey fight and survive or surrender to their fate of being hunted? In “The Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury and “Being Prey” by Val Plumwood you read about the deadly consequences of becoming prey. The conflicts of each story are alike, as well as the setting and protagonists of the stories. The two texts resemble one another through their literary elements.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet demonstrate the ignorance and susceptibility of men to making impulsive decisions without considering the consequences.
How is one supposed to learn from their mistakes when they do not even know they made them in the first place? All people make mistakes, but only those that are wise learn from them, and actually realize they made them, while others simply overlook them. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, one is able to witness how serious mistakes that were left unrealized, and forgotten, led to the tragic death of the two protagonists. Errors and mistakes should be corrected, before it is too late. Most of the characters in the play have caused the death of the protagonists, one way or another. The characters that caused the most dramatic and serious effect upon Romeo and Juliet’s death are Tybalt, the Nurse, and the Friar Laurence.
An example of Romeo’s rash decision is when he gets revenge and kills Tybalt. Romeo is in full anger and really is not thinking about what he is doing. He ends up defeating Tybalt, but his punishment is that he is banished from Verona and is forced to live in Mantua. Romeo now has to leave Juliet behind and live on his own. After Romeo kills Tybalt he says out loud, “O, I am fortune’s fool!” (3.1.130). Romeo realizes that he has made a huge mistake and that now he is going to have to pay the consequences. He flees the scene and later realizes that he is banished. It shows how Romeo’s unthoughtfulness has caused him trouble. Juliet also, makes a rash decision in begging the Friar to help her be with Romeo or she’ll kill herself. She doesn’t think about how she could think of a different plan instead of threatening to kill herself. Juliet tells the Friar that he must help her or else. Juliet tells the Friar, “ Tell me not, friar, that thou hearest of this, Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it/I long to die.” (4.1.51-67). This reveals that Juliet is “dying” if she doesn’t have Romeo with her. All Juliet needed to do was calm down and think of a plan by herself. Of course, the biggest rash decision was the decision to kill themselves. If Friar John would have went by himself and brought Romeo the message, they would have lived together in Mantua. Instead Balthasar
In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, all the choices made by the star crossed lovers have consequences. The two lovers blame fate for their misfortune. They refuse to believe that fate does not determine the end result, only that they can do that. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is presented with a plethora of choices. The audience is introduced to Romeo as he sulks over his lover Rosaline.
Hasty and rash decisions can dramatically alter the life of anyone in positive and negative ways; poorly thinking an action through and acting only on emotion can lead to egregious consequences. William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet’ shows us on an number of different occasions that hasty and rash decisions can have fatal and tragic consequences. Some instances when this is shown to be true is in the circumstance in which Tybalt is murdered by Romeo, Romeo and Romeo’s decision to commit suicide near the end of the play.
In the stories A Sound of Thunder and Being Prey, both stories take place in a dangerous and deadly environment. A sound of Thunder takes place in a prehistoric jungle that has dinosaurs among other giant animals that can potentially kill you. Being Prey has crocodiles that can attack you. On page 90 when the guide say to Val “But don’t go onto the main river channel. The current’s too swift, and if you get into trouble, there are the crocodiles. Lots of them along the river.”, shows how the environments are deadly. Val and Eckles wandered into a place not meant for humans and are expecting not to get hurt, even when they are not listening to the rules provided to them. A Sound of Thunder and Being Prey have a dangerous environment that adds to the setting of the story.
Human beings are not perfect, and, although people often make mistakes, it is the recognition of those mistakes and the demonstration of remorse that indicates an ability to change. In Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, spurred by the predictions of the witches of her husband’s future as king, makes decisions she will later come to regret. Although she appears to be strong in planning the king’s murder, her moments of doubt throughout the play indicate a sense of weakness which ultimately lead to her mental instability and death.
.... ... middle of paper ... ... If Romeo and Juliet made wise choices, then they would not have suffered the results of their own decisions just because they made reckless ones. Their love lacked wisdom and so it brought them doom - it brought them tragedy.
The theme of guilt, as perceived by readers and felt by the characters is demonstrated by both Davies and Shakespeare. This emotion of guilt, affects a person like a drop of acid that corrodes anything it meets. Through these two texts, the authors suggest to the readers that this emotion is part of life, and that there is no way one can eradicate it. Although, there lies some negative effects, it always benefits one after admitting to or paying for mistakes, as seen in both of the texts.
In order to make a reasonable decision, one must consider every possible repercussion. In the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet believes that faking her death will get her out of the wedding with Paris, however she does not take into account how her decision will affect the people around her. Romeo, naive to Juliet’s fabricated demise, was convinced that he couldn’t live without his Juliet, and poisoned himself in spite of Juliet's plans. She woke up from her death-like coma, and Juliet realized that Romeo was dead, and actually killed herself. Other people’s lives were changed as a result of their deaths. “A glooming peace this morning with it brings; The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head: Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things; Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished: For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”(V, III, 327-333) This is an example of the consequences of decision making because Juliet didn’t acknowledge how her decisions impacted other people’s lives. This shows that when making decisions, one should consider it from another perspective.
Like Romeo, if Juliet had just taken some time to think things through, this disaster might have never occurred.
No person can go through life without facing the consequences of their actions. In fact, it is generally believed that every action must have a reaction. This belief is exhibited in Shakespeare's Macbeth. In the play, Lady Macbeth was the push that led her husband, Macbeth, to kill their king. This murder causes a series of consequences for both characters, which ultimately lead to their downfall. These character’s actions led to negative repercussions, but the audience will have a hard time pitying them, as their tragedy appears to be self inflicted. This idea of a self wrought tragedy is apparent in Lady Macbeth, as she is initially seen as a brutal woman because she convinced Macbeth to kill king Duncan, and aided in the murder. However, her guilt eventually lead to her own demise.
The choices Romeo and Juliet make are poor, and eventually resulted in their death. Getting married, killing Tybalt, and thinking with hastyness were all poor choices that lead to both of their deaths. Once in a while making bad choices doesn’t affect someone as much, but making then many times regularly does affect one’s life. This teaches people that we must think our actions through before committing them.
Many individuals take the opportunities presented to them for granted, resulting in not thoroughly and cautiously thinking about how their actions will affect not only themselves, but possibly the people around them. Morality is a huge factor that affects the positive or negative outcomes of one’s actions. Novels, stories, plays and other forms of writing help display this concept by showing how characters are only self satisfied when negative consequences are not faced. In William Shakespeare's play, Macbeth and Hernando Tellez’s short story, “Just Lather, That’s All”, the main characters, Macbeth and the Barber show whether self satisfaction is attainable if one follows their morals.
