According to Ben Zimmer, in “Chunking,” many people greatly benefited from lexical chunks of words more logically and realistically. Zimmer claimed that at an early age, commonly set of phrases were memory enhancer and it actually improvised our ability to proficiently remember these sets of information because it gets processed and stored in our brain as single units. However, Zimmer also emphasized that one well-known critic was not favorable of lexical chunking because overstressing scripted words were not as effective as learning English language the usual and conventional technique such as: ordinary vocabulary, correct punctuation and proper grammar. Throughout the article, Leonard Pitts Jr. makes it abundantly clear his disapproval of the "McBudget" strategy served up by the fast food mega giant. The mood portrayed could at best be described as complete and utter disbelief, with a bitter pinch of anguish. Metaphorically punching well-crafted, rational hole after hole into an exceedingly narrow-minded proposal, used to shade a harsh reality. Though subtle and straight forward, it's the underlining depths of the author's argument which truly bear the antagonizing weight in the piece. The masterful used of the word "bupkes" for example; conveys a rhetorical first strike. A Yiddish word meaning "next to nothing"; Pitts' particular choice of language supplemented a more culturally philosophical notion.
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Neil Gaiman – Mr. Gaiman starts his speech with a flashback to the beginning of his career before working his way to his claim. Gaiman then uses examples from his career as grounds to support the claim he made earlier in the speech before going in to some personal values that he feels that his audience (artists) should hear. The podcast Serial, narrated by Sarah Koenig, reveals how that insignificant amount of time sentenced Adnan Syed to prison for the rest of his life. In episode one of Serial, Koenig explores the way in which Adnan’s inability to remember twenty-one minutes of one afternoon resulted in a prison sentence for murder.
Authors have many strategies when it comes to winning over their readers and on some occasions may even target their opponents, to make them look bad, in an attempt to make themselves look better. In the articles by Steve Greenberg and Michael Weinreb we will look at the way authors constrict articles to get readers to side with opinion by appealing to a person through logos, pathos, ethos, and the use of rhetorical devices. Greenberg use of a logical fallacy, using a rhetorical device against his friend, and his own use of rhetorical devices in order to convince reader through by ethos of how awful his friend and cardinal fans are, while Weinreb focuses on logos, a logical fallacy, and rhetorical devices to strengthen
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In the short story, “The Story of An Hour”, written by Kate Choppin, a woman with a heart trouble is told her husband had passed away in a railroad disaster. Mrs. Mallard was depressed, then she came to a realization that she was free. Back in the day this story was written, women did not have many rights. They were overruled by their husband. As she became more aware of how many doors her husband death would open, she had passed away. The doctors had said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills. The irony in the situation was that as she was dying, her husband walked through the door, alive.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
In this experiment we replicated a study done by Bransford and Johnson (1972). They conducted research on memory using schemas. All human beings possess categorical rules or scripts that they use to interpret the world. New information is processed according to how it fits into these rules, called schemas. Bransford and Johnson did research on memory for text passages that had been well comprehended or poorly comprehended. Their major finding was that memory was superior for passages that were made easy to comprehend. For our experiment we used two different groups of students. We gave them different titles and read them a passage with the intentions of finding out how many ideas they were able to recall. Since our first experiment found no significant difference, we conducted a second experiment except this time we gave the title either before or after the passage was read. We found no significant difference between the title types, but we did find a significant difference between before and after. We also found a significant title type x presentation interaction. We then performed a third experiment involving showing objects before and after the passage was read. There we did encountersome significant findings. The importance and lack of findings is discussed and we also discuss suggestions for future studies, and how to improve our results.
The Sophists were an influential group of educators that traveled to teach people, who could afford it, how to argue effectively and deliver a speech. Among these first public speaking teachers were three sophists, Thrasymachus, Protagoras, and Gorgias. These sophists were opposed to Socrates’ Socratic Method since, they believed that the “truth” stood relative and they did not attempt to produce “truth” because they argued that the “truth” didn’t actually exist. The Sophists believed that they could win every argument without using justice and the truth because they used trickery and rhetorical techniques to win at all cost.
