The author of the article “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” is Linda M. Hasselstrom. She is a peace-loving woman, but because of several dangerous events she encountered, she decided to carry a pistol. She is definitely an expertise on this subject because she had many experiences getting sex assault. She wrote this article for women and the people who against owning guns. For example, she wrote, “A woman who travels alone is advised, usually by men, to protect herself by avoiding bars and other ‘dangerous situations,’ by approaching her car like an Indian scout, by locking doors and windows. But these precaution aren’t always enough. I spent years following them and still found myself in dangerous situation. I began to resent …show more content…
the idea that just because I am female, I have to be extra careful.” She is trying to convince those people who against owning guns that guns provide safety and also encouraging other women to own a gun. For example, “This was a personal decision, but because handgun possession is a controversial subject, perhaps my reasoning will interest others.” The central idea of this article is that many events cause her decided to carry a pistol; however, she also mention that we must treat a firearm’s power with caution. Not only you have to know how to use a gun, you also have to convince yourself that you can actually shoot a person. First she talked about the sex assault during camping.
She was camping with another women, but their neighbor ruin their enjoyment by talking about sexy assualt them during the night. This event taught her that camping was not safe even with another woman, and she also mentioned that her spray cans of deodorant weren’t enough to protect them. She then gave an example of a woman who had a flat tire and called for help on her CB radio. Unfortunately that woman got a rapist who left her beaten. This story is sad but it taught her not to use the CB radio. She then gave an example that she got followed by a car. The passenger in that car flashed a blinding spotlight in her face, and a group of man come out. From that night, she realized that the locked car doors were useless if she was trap, because those men could break the windows easily. After that, she talked about the story about she asking a man with a shotgun to leave politely. Then she realized that she could have been killed and no one will notice. She then tell us that kung fu is useless against rapist, because in order to use martial arts you have to be extremely close. Beating a strong man is not easy for a skinny woman even she is really good at martial art. She gave an example of several women who were extremely well trained in the martial arts, but were raped and beaten anyway. After those events, she decided to get a gun. She continued to carry a pistol because the pistol saved her life once. She gave an example of the drunk people on the highway. Those men were about to reach the handle inside her door, then she show them her gun and use it to point at the cans on the highway. Within one minute the cans and the men were back in the car and headed down the
road. When I first apply to San Jose State University, I applied for the computer science major; however, I didn’t get into the major because the major was impact. I didn’t stop trying. I joined the computer science club, attending to their meeting, and I also took computer programming classes online. I have decided to get in this major because of many events. When I was a kid, I loved playing video games. I can play Mario Brothers and Street fighters all day, but then I got bored. I want to play something new, but my parents did not allow me spend money on video games anymore. So I come up with an idea: I am going to create my own computer games, so my parents cannot stop me. My father was a computer teacher in middle school before we immigrate to the United States. I asked my dad to teach me how to create a computer game. He told me that I need to learn coding first, and to be good at coding, I also need to learn some high level math. After some training, I became a middle school students and start competing in some computer contest for my school. During the computer training with my team in middle school, I made my first computer game called guess my number. It was a game that the computer generate a number randomly from one to one hundred, and I needed to guess the number in the least amount of tries. It wasn’t a very fancy game, but it made me getting more and more interested in computer programming. After I came to U.S because of my family, I found a summer program from Sacramento State University that will teach me how to design computer games not only for free, but will also give me five hundred dollars if I completed the program. I joined it right away. During the summer, I design one of my favorite game: Crazy Pong. The next summer, we had a group project, which is a group of math games for kids. I really enjoy the summers I spent working as a computer programmer and a game designer. This events are the reasons why I choose computer science as my major. I think I am making a right decision, because I am learning the things I love. This decision is one of the most important decision in my life, because I have chose my future of being a computer scientist or a software engineer. After this decision, I will need to start choosing my classes base on my major and start preparing myself for this major. For example, I joined the computer science club in our school. I am very glad I did that because there are so many opportunities provided from this club. They teach me things that most professors would not teach. Since there are many general education classes I have to take, I do not have any computer science class this semester. So I decided to started taking online computer science classes. There many free classes online from some of the most famous school in the world. I found a computer programming class from Harvard, and I really like it. These classes probably would not count for San Jose State University, but they will definitely help my future.
On the night of August 31st 1986, Angelique Lavallee a battered 21 year-old woman in an unstable common law relationship was charged with murder. She shot her spouse, Kevin Rust in the back of the head while he was leaving the bedroom. Angelique was in fear for her life after being taunted with the gun and was threaten to be killed. Hence, she felt that she had to kill him or be killed by him. The psychiatrist Dr. Shane, did an assessment and concluded that she was being terrorized by her partner. Dr. Shane concluded that Angelique was physically, sexually, emotionally and verbally abused. As a result, in the psychiatrist’s opinion, the killing was a final desperate act by a woman who seriously believed she would be killed that night. This in turn identify her as a

In the article “A peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carriers a Gun,” the author Linda M. Hasselstrom has a credible argument for carrying a gun. Hasselstrom has a solid ethical appeal and her argument had logic based on her many dangerous personal experiences. Although her article is credible, she uses many fallacies to make it seem that if women have a gun they can protect themselves from men.
The excerpt of “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries A Gun” is a personal account from Linda Hasselstrom on why she feels the need to carry a gun as well as, why other women should feel the need to own a gun. Hasselstrom uses rhetorical appeals in order to justify her means of security, however she fails due to her inability to provide a substantial amount of background knowledge.
In the article “Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” Linda M. Hasselstrom, explains a series of events that prompt her to an important decision. It was a decision that changed her life. Hasselstrom is a respected writer who has written several books on based on personal, life experiences. In this particular article she gives examples of events that have occurred to her that forced her take a decision of carrying a gun. She explains that throughout her 10 recent years there were varies occasions where she saw herself in a dangerous situation. During those 10 years she constantly experienced situations where she saw she needed protection, and a simple self defense class wasn’t going to help. She became aware of her surroundings and eventually had experience on what to do in those types of dangerous situations. Although carrying a gun for her was something she needed when it came to protection, she also had to learn that it was a huge responsibility.
Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that any attempt by the government to control guns should not be supported
Gun Control in America is seen as ineffective, citizens believe gun control laws in place are not protecting lives, but taking them away. In order to solve this problem, many think more laws should be put in place. By doing so, they believe guns would no longer be in the hands of criminals and lives would not be ended before their time. In Christine Watkins’s article, “Stronger Gun Control Will Save Lives” She explains that if guns were objects that truly kept us safe, America would be the safest country in the world. She also states that a gun in any home is more likely to be mistreated, causing an accidental shooting. She also hints that more common sense laws would greatly benefit gun owners (Stronger Gun Control). One of her points is quite agreeable, more common sense gun laws would be entirely useful in the long run. By having more safety guidelines, such as; trigger locks, which make it so the gun cannot be used, keeping the ammunition and the gun separated, never pointing a gun at another person, unless your life is in life threatening danger, making sure the weapon is properly cleaned on a regular basis, and even teaching children how to properly handle weapons. By taking these common sense precautions to use, it would prevent innumerable accidental misfires in homes. On the other hand, laws put in place to simply make it more difficult to obtain a weapon is not the answer. By keeping guns out of the lawful citizen’s hands, only the lawbreakers will benefit. Author John R. Lott, Jr. wrote the book entitled More Guns Less Crimes, informs readers that by having a concealed weapon, as opposed to carrying a weapon openly, carries more potential to reduce crime rates across America. By concealing a weapon, no one knows who is ...
Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of the citizen to bear arms is just one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible. -Hubert Humphrey, 1960 My background is probably atypical for a somewhat high-profile supporter of the right to keep and bear arms. I am black and grew up in Manhattan’s East Harlem, far removed from the great American gun culture of rural, white America.
Khubchandani is a professor at Ball State University, which conducted a survey among the students at the University. He emphasizes, “However, the majority of women said there were more disadvantages to carrying handguns on campus. These were women who did not own firearms and did not have a firearm in the home growing up”(Most College Students). He says that utmost women do not want firearms on campus because they don’t see advantages from having concealed weapons on campus. But, he also states that this is the case because they have not been exposed in an environment with guns. Therefore people are only at a disadvantage if they don’t seek any information about gun assurance including a permit and gun

Gun control is an awfully big issue in the United States today. Many people in America don’t agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns and freedom away from law-abiding citizens. Many citizens have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns aren’t very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection when used correctly. The second amendment states “the right to bear arms”; does this grant everyone the right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for the good guy average Joe to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea, and are taking part in the loss of our freedom that was given to us.
The list of reasons why women should always carry a pistol is abundant. One of the reasons being an experience a writer had while driving her car. Hasselstrom was steering down a road and a man was making a colossal attempt to drive her off the road. She states in her essay, “When his car passed mine with only two inches to spare, I showed him my pistol, and
“Their best defense against injury is to put no defense and give them what they want” (Kates). Critics may argue that concealed handguns are not an effective form of self defense. To the contrary, robbery and assault victims who used a gun were less likely to be attacked or suffer injury, “Neither a martial art skills nor chemical sprays provide a real option for victims faced by attackers who are stronger or armed” (Kates). People feel safer when they carry a concealed weapon because they feel that criminals will avoid attacking them. Citizens want to conceal carry a handgun because every day there are dangerous individuals who prey on the weak. In addition to that, concealed handguns are an effective non-lethal form of self defense a majority of the time. Gary Kleck from the Federal Bureau of Investigation “estimated that, 2 million to 2.5 million victims annually use handguns to repel criminal attackers” (Kates). The surprise of being armed is the advantage for the victim, which the victim has the disadvantage of knowing the time and place of being attacked. Concealed carry actually provides protection to citizens that do not carry because the criminals are not sure who is able to defend themsel...
Hasselstrom. In this essay the author, a pacifist, explains why she feels the need to carry a gun. She begins by describing her line of work as a freelance writer and the isolated area she lives in. She then goes on to recall events from the past years where she has felt threaten or unsafe. One such incident was a camping trip she took with her friend where fellow campers made them feel uncomfortable. Another event was that of a woman who had car troubles, she called for help but reached a rapist who assaulted her. The author continues to recall more personal incidents such as being followed by men who harassed her on a narrow bridge, another man with a shotgun who made her realize how isolated her ranch was, and one evening when a light was on in her home. These events prompted her to learn Kung Fu, yet she still felt unsafe and decided on carrying a gun. Despite being hesitant at first to carry a gun it has proven to be the best deterrent when faced with a threatening situation, simply showing the gun has been enough to protect
