Two things should be feared in life: a woman with a low tolerance and a woman with a low tolerance and pistol. Women throughout the past decade have experienced occurrences where a gun would have been helpful. The incidents could have been as simple as needing the gun when going deer hunting or in a more serious situation like sexual assault. During every task in a day, a woman in the United States should be armed with a small weapon.
The list of reasons why women should always carry a pistol is abundant. One of the reasons being an experience a writer had while driving her car. Hasselstrom was steering down a road and a man was making a colossal attempt to drive her off the road. She states in her essay, “When his car passed mine with only two inches to spare, I showed him my pistol, and

he disappeared.” (Hasselstrom 356) This specific personal event out of the numerous Hasselstrom had in her essay, shows the amount of fear a human can receive only from a glimpse of a gun. For example, a male, medium sized dog that withholds a big ego is chasing a cat down a street hoping to finally reach its play toy. Although, once he sees another dog that is perceived as tougher and capable of doing more harm, the medium sized dog relinquishes his role of chasing the cat and takes a different route. The fear of a gun can protect a woman when a male who thinks he is funny is tormenting her. Furthermore, another reason why women should always have a weapon on them is because of the sexual victimization rates. A recent survey showed that 72.8% of 225 women surveyed indicated they had at least one sexual victimization experience since the age of 16. (Turchik and Hassija) Now, imagine if at least half of the girls surveyed were armed and knew how to shoot a gun; the percentage would be dropped tremendously. No one will want to bother a girl who knows how to kill someone within seconds. Sexual assaults are beyond serious and governments are not looking at the depressing statistics when coming up with gun policies. Republican Assemblywoman Michele Fiore states in the debate for gun authorization on college campuses, “ If these young, hot little girls on campus have a firearm, I wonder how many men will want to assault them.” Fiore also adds on, “The sexual assaults occurring would go down once these sexual predators get a bullet in their head.” For the assaulting rate to go down, women need to buy a gun and obtain practice with the weapon. The last reason a woman should always carry a gun is because of empowerment.
Women, through the decades, have slowly started to achieve improved roles in society. During World War 2, Rosie the Riveter embarked the working roles of women, which was also the start of equality for genders. A woman is underestimated for her ability to defend herself in a rough situation. When wanting to learn how to shoot a gun, few men will laugh in the female’s face not thinking they are capable of potentially hurting another human. Movie set teacher, Paxton Quigley, states in an article, “ Guns are the great equalizer. They have been symbolic of men’s culture, but why shouldn’t I have the best protection too? Learning how to shoot can empower women too.” Gun ownership for a woman is only the beginning of feminism. The ignorance in the world has spread and Americans tend to think feminism is about women overpowering men and standing above them. Feminism is about having equal gender roles including men not be dominant in everything. A woman owning a gun is one significant step towards female empowerment and equality between men and women. The significant step could get society where it should
be. All in all, women in the country should retain a gun with them at all places. Reducing normal harassment, preventing sexual assaults, and beginning a new era of female empowerment are all reasons for a woman to purchase a gun and learn how to use it.
In her younger ages, she used a gun for entertainment, she loved to hunt with her father. The author was educated and taught about guns, by her father because of the unsaddling event of her grandmother and mother on highway 66 when the three men that were trying to run them off the road for the large cash amount that was used for cashing payroll checks for the miners. As she got older her gun was there for protection and security. She was more assured with it that she would be able to protect herself.
In the article “A peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carriers a Gun,” the author Linda M. Hasselstrom has a credible argument for carrying a gun. Hasselstrom has a solid ethical appeal and her argument had logic based on her many dangerous personal experiences. Although her article is credible, she uses many fallacies to make it seem that if women have a gun they can protect themselves from men.
The excerpt of “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries A Gun” is a personal account from Linda Hasselstrom on why she feels the need to carry a gun as well as, why other women should feel the need to own a gun. Hasselstrom uses rhetorical appeals in order to justify her means of security, however she fails due to her inability to provide a substantial amount of background knowledge.
In the article Hasselstrom mentions that the right to carry a concealed weapon is a very controversial subject. There are many that do not believe in having a handgun is the solution to a dangerous problem. In the other hand, there are others who believe handgun possession is a great idea. The main idea that Hasselstrom is trying to portray is that women should be extremely cautious especially when they are alone. Women should be able to defend themselves against their attacker when they feel they are in certain situations. Her solution was to carry a handgun with her. Even though Hasselstrom solution has worked for her, it doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone. Her events that took her to make the decision to carry a handgun is based on personal experiences and not statis...
Many people have heard that having a gun makes you a man, so Dave believes that purchasing a gun would help him become one. The gun represents power, masculinity, independence, and respect, which are all things that Dave wants. The idea of owning a gun is David’s outlet, a way to quickly become more powerful and manly. The feeling of having a gun in his possession was to prevent others around him from looking at him as just a little boy. With the gun, Dave felt invincible, as if no harm could come his way and as if he is on top of the
After reading “Gun Crazy” by Dorothy Allison, I immediately thought of my own experiences where was told being a female I couldn’t or shouldn’t do certain things. Allison discussed how her uncle told her that just because she was a female she wouldn’t ever be taught how to shoot a gun by any male in her family. I could instantly relate, in coming to Mississippi State my major was Architecture. I was told by many professors and advisors that Architecture is a male dominated career and that maybe I should major in Interior Design, a major that is similar but “more feminine”. I eventually did change my major being so discouraged. Being on the topic of women being told they can’t do certain things simply because they are women got me to wondering
Concealed weapons have been a debate for years in the United States. Pro-gun people believe that carrying a gun is a necessary action. Anti-gun people argue that carrying weapons makes the world a more dangerous place. I am a proponent of being able to fulfill all of the rights that we are given as citizens of America. People should be able to carry concealed weapons. However, some people who are licensed to carry a weapon are being careless. Linda Hasselstrom is a great example of those who abuse the authority of their weapon; giving the pro gun people, as a whole, a bad reputation. I disagree with the manner in which Linda Hasselstrom chooses to use her weapon in a few of the scenarios in her story, A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun.
In America there is 89 firearms per 100 people (Moore) so it is safe to say most people will come in contact with a firearm in their life time. But when you do will you know how to handle the situation? Guns can be deadly when abused and used incorrectly. There is a way to reduce the unnecessary deaths. Firearm safety is the important piece in reducing the deaths and firearm abuse and it should be made mandatory in schools.
“The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” The Second Amendment supports conceal and carry by stating “the right to bear arms.” That statement should be exemplified as to have a gun in public. People need to have a weapon ready for use in case of emergency. Not in a car or locked up inside a house, but in reach of the certified personnel. According to the opposing side on ProCon.org, the article Should Adults Have the Right to Carry a Concealed Handgun states: “the amendment is not unlimited and should permit weapons only to citizens who can prove a ‘justifiable need’” (“Right to Carry a Concealed Handgun” 3). The article also has a women’s opinion on Conceal and carry. She stated “women need to be able to defend their home and defend themselves if they go out. It 's just a safety issue” (“Right to Carry a Concealed Handgun” 2). In order to feel safe, and have a reliable self-defense mechanism should be a justifiable reason for Conceal and Carry
A man by the name of Sean Faircloth, who is an author, an attorney, and a five-term state legislator from Maine; went against Sam Harris to give his own beliefs on the ordeal. Faircloth also wrote an article for The Week in response to Harris titled, “Why more guns won’t make us safer” in which he claims that Harris neglected the two largest problems involving gun-violence. Faircloth believes that Harris failed to acknowledge the substantial issue of gun-related domestic violence against women, and the success of gun-control legislation in foreign countries. Utilizing statistics, real world examples, and his own logic; Faircloth goes in depth with his core arguments. He wrote his article to dissuade the readers of Sam Harris’s article that “Why I own guns” lacks
In “Get A Knife, Get A Dog, But Get Rid Of Guns,” Molly Ivins believes in strict gun control among citizens who are not armed forces or badged members of the society. Ivins supports the Second Amendment, but takes it literally and word for word. She believes that people can get killed easier cleaning guns than knives. The author compares gun killing to automobile killings and how you have to be licensed to drive them but we do not regulate guns. Ivins does not believe that people are using guns to hunt and put food on the table, instead they are using them for harmful reasons. She thinks that guns should be left to the people that have extensive training and discipline. Ivins’ thought is that a dog should be protection enough for everyone.
In the United States of America, there is much debate about the effectiveness and practicality of concealed firearms. Many citizens today are trying to support their claim with old, outdated evidence and targeted research to attempt to prove a point, but can not escape the truth. Although Concealed firearms may sound appealing to reduce crime rates and stop violence, new evidence suggests otherwise. Recently there has been trends of certain lunatics who own guns that decide to shoot innocent people, justifying the need for more strict gun control laws. The purpose of this paper is to educate and inform about the immensely important topic of concealed firearms, with focus on what effect it has on society and crime rates. We will go over modern
Khubchandani is a professor at Ball State University, which conducted a survey among the students at the University. He emphasizes, “However, the majority of women said there were more disadvantages to carrying handguns on campus. These were women who did not own firearms and did not have a firearm in the home growing up”(Most College Students). He says that utmost women do not want firearms on campus because they don’t see advantages from having concealed weapons on campus. But, he also states that this is the case because they have not been exposed in an environment with guns. Therefore people are only at a disadvantage if they don’t seek any information about gun assurance including a permit and gun
The 31 states that have “shall issue” laws allowing private citizens to carry concealed weapons have, on average, a 24 percent lower violent crime rate, a 19 percent lower murder rate and a 39 percent lower robbery rate than states that forbid concealed weapons.(David Lampo)In fact, the nine states with the lowest violent crime rates are all right-to-carry states.(David lampo)Concealed handguns set up rules of self authority throughout the state that are in.basically it an you want to shoot me i'll ...
“Their best defense against injury is to put no defense and give them what they want” (Kates). Critics may argue that concealed handguns are not an effective form of self defense. To the contrary, robbery and assault victims who used a gun were less likely to be attacked or suffer injury, “Neither a martial art skills nor chemical sprays provide a real option for victims faced by attackers who are stronger or armed” (Kates). People feel safer when they carry a concealed weapon because they feel that criminals will avoid attacking them. Citizens want to conceal carry a handgun because every day there are dangerous individuals who prey on the weak. In addition to that, concealed handguns are an effective non-lethal form of self defense a majority of the time. Gary Kleck from the Federal Bureau of Investigation “estimated that, 2 million to 2.5 million victims annually use handguns to repel criminal attackers” (Kates). The surprise of being armed is the advantage for the victim, which the victim has the disadvantage of knowing the time and place of being attacked. Concealed carry actually provides protection to citizens that do not carry because the criminals are not sure who is able to defend themsel...
