Famous satirist, Jonathan Swift, in his essay, A Modest Proposal, talks about how to solve Ireland's overpopulation and severe poverty. Swift’s purpose in this essay is to convey how serious Ireland’s problem is and to convince the people of Ireland, both rich and poor, to make a change. Swift adopts a serious tone in order to make his ridiculous proposal seem “modest” when in fact it is ludicrous. This tone of his helps highlight just how severe Ireland's depression is.
An Oxford University graduate, Jonathan Swift, in his article, A Modest Proposal, proposes a solution to Irelands growing poverty in the 18th century by proposing the selling and eating of innocent babies. Swift’s purpose is to state the benefits that the poor would gain from selling their one year old children to the wealthy to eat them. He takes on a concerning tone in order to convince the people of Ireland to consider and adopts his obscene plan.
Historically, Ireland has suffered from problems of famine and overpopulation during the eighteenth century due to British parliament obtaining the right to legislate Ireland. The British parliament’s right to legislate in turn created and made way for a great deal of poverty for those who lived in Ireland. During this time in the eighteenth century, many individuals would have believed that overpopulation and poverty, or people and the economy, were one in the same; that it was only natural for people to become part of the economy. In modern society, however, the traditional mode of thought is that individuals and the economy are to be separated. Jonathan Swift, however, proses a contrary and satirical solution to these problems. Jonathan Swift, an Anglo-Irish satirist, writes a juvenalian satire that provides a British approach by proposing to solve the fate of the poverty-stricken Irelands by selling poor children as food for the wealthy in his essay, “A Modest Proposal.” Swift’s essay is a manifestation of the idea that Irish citizens were denied their natural human rights by England by dehumanizing them and viewing them as a simple form of commodity. He focuses on how England policy exhausts Ireland’s resources and exploits the individuals living there. Through Swift’s proposal, he complicates the notion of political and economic issues of the time by introducing our modern idea about human rights through making the absurdity of his proposal literal so that we feel repulsed by it. At the core, he is suggesting that the English and the wealthy landowners of Ireland are causing the poverty and misery of the population.
In the article “The Modest Proposal” the credible author known as, Johnathan Swift informs us readers on the starving families in Ireland. Swift’s total purpose of the article is to educate the article readers on how these families struggle for survival from the problem of starvation. Swift adopts an emotional and relatable feeling in his readers. Swift further conveys his explanation later on in the article.
Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” is considered to be highly satirical. Swift’s proposal of solving the hunger menace through the sale of poor children to wealthy folks is very satirical. He argues that the practice of selling children will solve the poverty problems since the nation will be depopulated. His projector explains the proposal in great depth, portraying Irish children as equivalent to cattle whose carcasses are used to produce ladies gloves and men’s boots. The rationale behind the Irish eating their babies is mocking in the sense that it satirizes people who make absurd claims in the name of solving a problem. As a writer, Swift satirizes himself by making claims of lack of economic gains from his altruistic works.
Well known and famous author, Jonathan Swift, in his persuasive essay, A Modest Proposal, convincing people that there needs to be a new way to help out the population problem while helping out the hunger problem as well. Swift’s purpose of this essay is to show people another way to make the population go down but really he’s trying to grab their attention then inform them of his real idea. He adopts an aggressive tone in order to convey his audience which is the people of Ireland.
Jonathan Swift in his “Modest Proposal” introduces a problem of poverty to his audience. The purpose of writing this piece is to warn the audience about some major problems. This piece is generally directed towards the general people because he doesn’t specifically direct it towards anyone in particular.
People have been trying to come up with solutions to threatening epidemics from many years. There was a famine in Ireland that killed many people. The poor people of Ireland could not support their families, which made them go to extreme measures. In order to survive, women and children were forced to beg for food to prevent them from starving to death. Jonathan Swift proposes a solution to this epidemic in A Modest Proposal. Swift states that the poor Irish should sell their children as if they were cattle, or better yet, eat the children themselves. Swift uses a mocking tone in order to effectively convey that he does not actually support cannibalism, but rather uses it as metaphor to describe the harsh times of Ireland.
An Irish man, educated, and being a father, Jonathan Swift wrote a modest proposal. Swift’s purpose is to use satire to show that the Irish people are becoming overpopulated and in desperate need of help; there all hunger and poverty-stricken. He adopts an over-the-top tone in order to really emphasize the fact that the Irish are so desperate for help.

Jonathan Swift’s ‘A Modest Proposal’ is by far the most bizarre and disgusting proposal that I believe I have ever had the displeasure of reading. Swift’s proposal as distasteful as it was (no pun intended) dealt with addressing the poverty that affected Ireland in the 1700’s. The issues that Swift addressed were indeed of dire importance but the manner in which he initially suggested these problems be solved is like reading a sick and twisted horror story. Swift proposes the idea of eating children as a means to end poverty. I think that I can safely say that every human in the world at some point has had a crazy thought, but to actually put it on paper and distribute it as if it would be a welcomed idea is mind boggling to me, especially in the era that this was suggested. He actually compares women to “breeders,” men to cattle, and using children’s skin for clothing! For me, I am a visual thinker and reading a proposal like this put the most horrible images into my mind. It is almost like driving by a train wreck, you don’t want to look but you can’t look away! The absurdity of the idea and the way that he suggests it would make marriages happier and mothers more tender to their children in hopes of a larger payout is completely disgusting. I would not have imagined that Swift would have been allowed to further his writings during this time due to the town or city folk thinking he was a danger and had absolutely lost his mind! The more I read the story it became clear to me that his initial proposal was merely an attention getter. I believe that he wanted the shock factor to lure people in and then tell them his real proposal.
