My long term career goals include the pursuit of research in the field of Bioinformatics and teaching in an academic environment. I have found that a career in research is both intellectually stimulating and satisfying and hence I have decided to take this up as my career objective. The career path that I want to pursue is in the medical field. I major in psychology and minor in biology because going to medical school has always been my desire. Being a pediatrician is my goal I wish to conquer. I am beyond interested and passionate about this career. It is not just a career, it is my life dreams. I want to be able to enjoy going to work every day knowing I love my job and I am here because I want to. Being a pediatrician I am able to work with children and many people of different cultures. I have always wanted to be a scientist and contribute something to the human cause and what better way to achieve this than by doing medical research? Medical school taught me the art of medicine and the research projects that I undertook taught me the science of medicine. What interests me the most is a path that combines the two, and one way to make that possible is to be an academic physician. The main purpose of conducting the interviews with Dr. Rod P. Githens and Ed.D candidate, Joshua C. Collins, is to understand the reasons they chose this career path; meanwhile, it was a good chance to know more about their experiences and stories. I also realized that there are many important components for a scholar to attain a successful career including good preparation, clear communication, and thoughtful organization. There are many takeaways from these two interviews. The following statements will illustrate the most valuable inspiration I obtained from them.
My experiences while working in the behavioral health field have played a pivotal role in my decision to pursue a career in Health Informatics. The journey toward choosing to pursue this particular field of study has not been an easy one. I have struggled for several years because I have so many interests such as public health, social work, sociology, art therapy, graphic design and now, health informatics. I felt that by choosing one above all of the others; it meant that I was abandoning the rest. Fortunately, I've come to realize that this is NOT true—my interests in all of these areas are connected. Since Health Informatics is an interdisciplinary study, all of my interests combine to make me a stronger student. My experiences in each of these areas will allow me to lend expertise in multiple areas when and/or if needed.
Marine Biology is what I would like to study. I want to become a marine biologist because I want to discover new species. I want to go to the 70% of the ocean that has not been discovered. Marine biologists also get to go travel to different places. They not only get to seethings underwater which not many people get to see, but they also get to see places on land which not many people get to see. Marine biologists are also interesting to me because they get to swim for most of their work day. I love the water and swimming. Marine biology is a very interesting and intriguing career to me.

Career Goals: I have narrowed in on three main career goals to complete at this time. First, I plan on staying at my current job at the Mayo Clinic as a QA Publication Specialist until my above educational goals are complete. It is important for me to stay with my current employer throughout my educational goals since my employer offers tuition reimbursement. This reimbursement is offered to every employee on a yearly basis. However, if one year of service is not completed after a reimbursement then all reimbursement money provided will need to be paid back in full. The tuition reimbursement covers about one quarter a year of my current education.
When future generations reflect upon this current era of human history and development, it is almost certain that the birth and advancement of bioinformatics will be among the most awe-inspiring of topics. Bioinformatics is the field of study which is concerned with the storage, retrieval, and analysis of biological data via the tools of informatics. The two major objectives of bioinformatics (as identified by -new avenues-p9) are the identification of genes and the prediction of their function. Bioinformatics therefore shares an intimate relationship with the field of functional genomics, which is defined by Alberts as “the field of study which aims to understand the ways in which cells execute and control the great number of operations required for normal function, and those in which cellular systems fail in disease”(1996).

The field of Computer Science is based primarily on computer programing. Programming is the writing of computer programs using letters and numbers to make "code". The average computer programer will write at least a million lines of code in his or her lifetime. But even more important than writting code, a good programer must be able to solve problems and think logicaly.
