In Linda Sue Park’s novel A Long Walk To Water, the main character Salva is based off of a real person named Salva who is a lost boy from Southern Sudan. A lost boy is someone who had to flee Southern Sudan from war and without family. The story is about Salva’s struggle for survival through his difficult time trying to get to safety. He gets help from several people along the way and somehow, against all odds, makes it to safety in the USA with a new family to help him out. Uncle keeps him calm during difficult times and Uncle keeps Salva moving through immense pain. When Salva’s group is in lion country and Marial is eaten by a lion, Salva becomes paranoid about lions and is terrified. So Uncle Jewiir calms him down and keeps him calm. A quote that shows how Salva’s Uncle keeps him calm is when he is reassuring Salva, he says, “‘Salva, we will soon be out of lion country. Everything will be alright’” (Park, 41). This proves that the Uncle is a survival factor for Salva because his Uncle was helping him survive by keeping him calm so he can move forward. So he does not get eaten by a lion. A second way he shows perseverance is when he somehow gets to the refugee camp in Kenya when he does not think he will. Salva is trying to get to the refugee camp in Kenya, and he is the leader of the group. They are all tired from crossing the Gilo River that has crocodiles and there were soldiers shooting at them. Salva had everyone pitch in to get them there. A quote that shows Salva’s perseverance is when he helps the other boys get to the refugee camp in Kenya. He had everybody helping but, “There were times when some of the boys did not want to do their share of the work. Salva would talk to them, coax them, and persuade them. Once in a while he had to speak sternly, or even shout. But he tried not to do this too often” (Park, 81). This quote proves Salva’s perseverance because he could have just said ok and done their work for them. But he got them to do the work, even if he had to shout, he persevered through the challenges and had everyone do their part.
