In the historical fiction novel, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva, the main character, is very resilient, and his resilience helps him overcome hardships. Being resilient means he is able to bounce back from difficulties. This is shown in many ways throughout the story. One area where this is shown is towards the beginning of the story, after Salva flees his village because of war. After this, Salva is left by an old woman who was feeding him, and taking care of him. Although this is difficult for him, he keeps on moving, and carrying on with his difficult life because of his resilience. Another part of the novel where Salva’s resilience shines is in the middle of the book when Salva’s uncle is shot, right in front of him. Resilience is important in all life, and Salva especially has to be able to bounce back since he’s a refugee from South Sudan, who has to face many hardships because of the Sudanese civil war. Linda Sue Park shows Salva’s resilience especially well towards the beginning of the story when an old woman who was taking care of Salva leaves him all alone, but he keeps on going. His ability to bounce back shines after the old woman leaves him when the text states, “Then he caught up to the group, determined not to lag behind, not to complain, not to cause any trouble to anyone” (Park 22). This shows that he is resilient even after the old woman leaves him, which is a difficult hardship to overcome. The way that Salva’s resilience helps him overcome hardships is highlighted especially well in the middle of A Long Walk to Water.
