Dear Dad, Hello. My name is Connor Reardon and I’m your favorite child. In my LA class, we read A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, a book that follows a true story about a boy named Salva Dutt and a fictional story about a girl named Nya. This book follows Salva on his journey of crossing many miles to safety after the civil war between Northern Sudan and Southern Sudan bombed his village. After several refugee camps, he is chosen to go to America. Nyas part of the story reflects on what many women and little girls do to gather water for their families. Water For South Sudan is a non-profit organization that raises money to build wells in South Sudan. Water For South Sudan builds wells to give people a cleaner and safer water supply. Most people in South Sudan have to walk up to eight hours daily to reach a small pond full of dirty water. We will be walking 3.4 miles to the Nature Center to learn a fraction of what it is like for women and girls to go through daily. For example, in A Long Walk To Water, Nya’s sister gets sick from dirty water. The doctor was 2 miles away and she had to walk. Once they got there, the doctor told them to boil water for a count of 200 before it was safe for her to drink, but the problem was that because they had little water available they couldn’t boil it or else they would lose water. Education in South Sudan is not that great either. Only the boys get to go to school because the girls have to walk to get water for most of their day. If people donate money to help build well, so many girls can have an education. Also, if people raise money, many children under the age of six will not die as often from dehydration.
