After reading chapters 1-11 of the narrative, “A Long Walk To Water,” by Linda Sue Park, I learned that Salva is a young boy from South Sudan born into the Dinka tribe who had found out his village was attacked and burned. Salva faces many challenges, such as finding food and surviving many threats. Throughout the chapters, when Salva is faced with challenges, he remains hopeful and never gives up when having to be faced with very hard and difficult situations. The word I would use to define Salva is ambitious. One reason I’m using the word ambitious to define Salva is because even though he knew that his village was attacked and burned, he was still very determined in finding his family. The author states, “All he could see was the gun’s huge barrel, black and gleaming as it moved toward his face. The end of the barrel touched his chin.Salva felt his knees turn to water. He closed his eyes and looked at me. If I die now, I will never see my family again. Somehow, this thought strengthened him enough to keep him from collapsing in terror.” This evidence supports that even though Salva knows his family is not with him, he still wants to make them proud. Salva has been through a lot but he doesn’t let that stop him and he keeps pushing through because he knows that’s what his family would want him to do. As I stated before, the word I would use to define Salva is ambitious. Another reason why I chose the word ambitious to describe Salva is because even though his Uncle and best friend were gone, he didn’t lose hope and he stayed strong knowing he was alone and didn’t have protection. The author claims, “Salva was amazed to find himself walking faster and more boldly than he had before. Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before Salva’s
