Peter Drucker once said, “Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.” Peter, a management consultant, educator, and author, gives us a description of one of the qualities many aspire to, leadership. Many believe that they were born to be leaders, but a leader is not born but made. Douglas MacArthur, America's most famous field commander and general, once said, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” A good leader stands out by their qualities, talents and values. What make a good leader are honesty, communication, confidence, commitment, positive attitude, and creativity. A unique kind of leadership is being a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Denise Ramos is CEO and President at ITT, which is a corporat...
A Captain of Industry can be defined as an honest business leader who affects others and their community in positive ways through creating jobs, donating money and making their products accessible to many. A Robber Baron on the other hand acquires their wealth through unethical and dishonest ways by exploiting resources and labor. We can all inarguably agree that entrepreneurs like Andrew Carnegie and Steve jobs have made massive impacts within their business professions. From Carnegie working in a factory at age 13 for $1.20 a week to becoming one the wealthiest businessmen in America during the 1800s. Andrew Carnegie is a true testimony to what hard work can achieve. To a more modern man who shares a similar story of success as Carnegie is Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs, a man who wasn't too fond of formal education and often found himself is troubling situations with others soon achieved accomplishments that would change the way we see/use technology today. Yet the question we are left to ask
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Brave New World is a novel set hundreds of years into our own future. On Earth, the Nine Years War tore the planet apart in the year A.F 178. Eerily, anthrax bombs dropped from the sky killed scores of people, what we in the post 9/11 world fear the most. When the dust settled, mankind banded together to create a new world called the “World State.” Their motto is “Community, Identity, Stability,” and it is all too much present as you will see. This future is a severely different place. To stabilize the populace, mankind has cloned each other by the thousands. Babies are conditioned by a caste system, and everyone grows up to do a specific job. Cold and sterile science replaces religion, individuality, and risk. Everyone is encouraged to pleasure themselves (through promiscuity, recreation and drugs... soma,) but not to have a bad day. This is reminiscent of the “Roaring 20’s” and the “free love” movement of the 1960’s. In this future, to be monogamous, bond, or soul-search would single you out as a loner. Here, “everyone belongs to everyone else.”
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
Benjamin Franklin is considered one of the greatest thinkers, inventors and leaders throughout American history. This Founding Father of the United States was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 17, 1706 and spent his childhood there until finally moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a teenager. Franklin was a leader in politics and science. Franklin lived for 84 years and passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1790. Although conspiracy theorists may disagree, Franklin was not clearly for or against organized religion during his lifetime. We see this in his autobiography that he wrote at the age of 79.
Bill Nye is a key figure in the scientific community. His outreach to children and his involvement with educating the public and furthering scientific inquiry and research make him one of the most influential scientists of the 21st century. Bill Nye grew up in Washington DC, after attending Sidwell Friends School, a private school in Washington DC, Bill went to Cornell University and majored in Mathematical Engineering. Bill started his entertainment career with a show called Almost Live, a comedy show where a sketch called “Bill Nye The Science Guy” had Bill do small experiments on the show. Bill then became the main entertainer of the PBS show “Bill Nye The Science Guy”, a show aimed at preteens. The show ran from 1993 to 1999 and aired
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.
According to Hom (2014), “STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications” (p. 1). STEM and ethics share some commonalities. Steele (2016) describes “ethics simplistically as dealing with “questions of good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, and justice and injustice” (p. 365). After reading more about STEM and ethics it is evident that one commonality they share is they both have a common decision making process. “STEM disciplines to make ethical decisions and to have the moral conviction to adhere to those decisions” (Barry, 2012, p. 5). With that being said, ethics and STEM could go hand in hand since ethics focuses on values and morals. Along with having a common decision making process, both ethics and STEM, focus on problem solving. “Ethics
Scientific Advancements in Brave New World vs. Modern Day We aren’t, in many ways, close to the set idea of social conditioning that was presented in Brave New World. Social conditioning is teaching individuals in a society to act in a certain way that is approved by the society as a whole. The kind of social conditioning that is weaved into the society in Brave New World revolves around the idea that they are to think of the society as a whole and not about themselves. Americans today are self-absorbed, we teach children to share but what do adults share?
Molecular and Microbiology. Many people hear the major and shudder; thoughts of sleepless nights, studying for courses unintelligible by the ‘average’ person, mad scientists hunched over test tubes and doctors doing open heart surgery. Research science and medicine, that’s what my major is geared towards, and I’m pursuing the medicine side of it all. Maybe I’ll be that open heart surgeon that comes to mind, or maybe just a family practitioner, either way, I want more than anything to be a doctor, a great doctor, and while my M&M degree is the first step in making that happen, I’d have to say that being a Lead Scholar is the second. Many people may not see the medical profession as one that requires being a leader to others, as you make your own decisions and people feel that you work on your own. You consult patients, help them with their problems, you work on each one on your own. If there is any involvement with any other health professional, people think it’s more like a team, with little to no individual leadership. They’re wrong, and right. Being a doctor is being a part of a team, and being a part of a team¬ does take personal leadership.
Leadership is something nobody is born with, but it is earned with the desire to create something extraordinary. Being a great leader requires qualities such as approachability, acceptance, perseverance, and a open mind. With none of these qualities, many of the great leaders we know today would be unheard of. In Creativity, Inc. Ed Catmull talks about how the Pixar Animation Studios are designed for animators to communicate and collaborate with each other so they can build on each other's ideas instead of having many incomplete ideas. He wants there to be collaboration and not competition so that together, they can persevere as a company and break boundaries for what they can accomplish. Great leaders must have open minds to new ideas. Nobody
Albert Einstein was a world renowned scientist that may be considered one of history’s greatest scientist with his creation of the Theory of Relativity or, E=MC^2. He was born in Ulm, Wurttemberg, Germany on March 14, 1897. His father’s name was Hermann Einstein and his mother’s name was Pauline Einstein. (Hasday) Though despite his outstanding success he had very many problems throughout his life that he had to struggle greatly to overcome. Albert Einstein overcame failure by pursuing his intellectual dreams, working hard to make a life for himself, and achieving the nobel prize in physics.
There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. To be a leader you also need to have certain qualities like being sociable, intelligent, have patience to deal with situations. A leader needs to be motivated or they will be a failure. I think I show leader ship all the time inside and outside of school. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way (John C. Maxwell).
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
ITRODUCTION As it becomes evident from historical observations, research is the creation of the curiosity which is caused by the human nature. A lot of the discoveries that occurred in the ancient years were achieved by luck. After that they acquired experience and skills to explore more and more for new achievements. The acute interest in discovering new methods and ideas gave answers to questions which faced the society of each period.
