A Comparison of Dance Macabre and Night On A Bare Mountain
Programme Music is a piece of music which can describe something. It has many advantages in a way because you could be looking at an image or words I.e. (a poem) and it can instantly interpret through the various types of musical instruments (Strings, Percussion, Woodwind & Brass) what you are reading or looking at. This can be done by varying the usage of tempo, rhythm, pitch, melody, accompaniment, & dynamics etc. You may find that the sound an instrument creates can effect the way we feel. An example :a flute could be classed as harmonious because the flute plays a high-pitched note that can give the effect of cheeriness. The complete opposite

All the low-pitched instruments could be classed as Autumn & Winter -because it is the most bitter and drastic time of the year. Both ‘Dance Macabre’ and ‘Night on the Bare Mountain’ have one thing in common this is that both pieces describe the ‘Dance Of Death’.
Dance Macabre was based on folklore in around the 14 &15th century. It was written by a French composer called Saint-Saens. The piece describes the gruesome happenings in the churchyard of a small French Village on Halloween. Dance Macabre was based on a poem which was written by another Frenchman called Henri Cazalis. The Piece is very clever because the instruments used almost certainly Sounded like the poem itself examples of which are; “Zig-a-zig-a-Zig” This sounds like death is tuning his violin. “His heels tap the tomb stones” this line in the poem could of influenced the composer to use the Timpani - it really had a good effect. The line “Death at midnight playing a dance tune” could have been referring to tempo -dance tune associated would have a fast tempo. Before we actually listened to Dance Macabre

I also expected to hear woodwind (the Flutes, Bassoons, Oboes etc…) being played because the poem line “The Winter wind whistles and the Lime-trees moan”, made me think of woodwind instruments because Woodwind is associated with blowing in order to produce the instrument’s sound. When I actually heard Dance Macabre it was similar to how I imagined it to sound like. The piece was firstly introduced by the Strings being played (Harp + Violin ) then the Timpani was played to represent the heels tapping the tomb stones. Towards the middle of the piece Woodwind was used to symbolise the Winter wind whistling. When the Skeletons were introduced I was expecting to hear the Double Bass being played as it would of created a creeping up on you effect. In actual fact the skeletons were represented by the Xylophone this is very clever because you could visualize the clattering of bones from the Skeletons dancing just by hearing the Xylophone. The ending of Dance Macabre it was very effective as when the Skeletons stopped dancing the wild
The movie Dances with Wolves was a real good movie and I enjoyed watching it. It showed how life was back in the time of the Civil War. The movie also showed how Indians lived and how they respect everything except the white men.
Different Dance Styles by Doris Humphrey and Maud Allen that Presented New Dances that Displayed Innovative Movements.
The governmental leaders of the United States of America began implementing Indian policies from its inception. As Euro-Americans they expected all non-whites in the U.S. to assimilate into a Euro-American (Christian) lifestyle, without reciprocation or sympathy to the traditions and history of our native people. Our founding fathers and subsequent leaders of the United States at varying times have used suppression, segregation, aggression, and assimilation to manage what they perceived as an Indian problem, and civilize them. The native peoples of North America have responded to these actions by, at times, complying with the U.S. government and allowing themselves to be relocated to other areas of the country leaving behind their ancestral
In chapter six of her book Making the White Man 's Indian: Native Americans and Hollywood Movies, Ange Aliess explores the topic of how Western have begun to change recently. The changes that she references in the film Dances With Wolves are also present in the film Winter in the Blood as well as in the 1491s shorts, even though the 1491s are a comedy group and not a Western genre. Aleiss describes the ways in which Native Americans reacted to Native portrayals in the film Dances With Wolves, and they tended to see the film’s better sides in contrast with critics. In Winter in the Blood, there are many stereotypes that are explored in ways that make the characters seem more real and less stereotypical as the backstories are revealed, despite
Throughout the ages, dance has played an important role in society. It symbolizes tradition, family, bonding, and entertainment. In almost every decade of the twentieth century, a different style of dance prevailed. In the 1970s, John Travolta brought disco dancing into the spotlight with his portrayal of Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. Through his depiction of this character, John Travolta shows the monumental effects of dancing. Literature can also artfully explore the effect of dance on people. Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz" dramatizes a special and positive moment in a boy's life. The author's word choice reflects the significance of this moment of bonding between a father and his son. Some critics have seen this boy's memories as a recollection of a time of abuse. This poem does not reflect an instance of abuse, but rather a dance of life.
Many say that music has evolved over the years. This essay shall explore the elements of two versions of one song. It shall discuss the correlations and disparities of these songs and confer how it has been revolutionised to entertain the audiences of today.

Dances with Wolves is a well-intentioned attempt to provide a progressive, new insight into Native Americans and their lives who have long been depicted as savages up until the earliest days of Hollywood film. However, the film nevertheless, pairs progressiveness with subtle and covert expressions of American ideals and affirmed stereotypes that may not negatively portray these people, but may not accurately depict them either.
I have always been fascinated by the many arts. Around September of last year, I discovered a show that had to do with dancing and singing, which caused me to have a slight interest in the former. In November, my best friend showed me a band that is talented in dancing, and this group has fueled my curiosity. Furthermore, I have already taken a few steps towards learning their dances. I aspire to accomplish the ability to dance because of this group, I am trying to learn the choreography to their songs, and I want to perform in front of people who enjoy watching others dance.
In the heart of Miami, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) dance majors put on a performance called The Art of Dance. Under the direction of Michelle Grant- Murray, guest choreographers challenged the students of MDC. The students were also able to exhibit their own work, as this was also their student choreography showcase. The evening consisted of diverse styles such as – African, contemporary, and world dance; unfortunately, I cannot say the all of the pieces impressed me.
In the film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, every time there was a close up of Augustus Gloop in the candy room, sinister music would play. This foreshadowed that something bad was going to happen to him in that room. It puts the viewer on edge and creates a mood of suspense because they don’t know what is going to happen. He also uses music to foreshadow events in the movie Edward Scissorhands. Every time Edward saw Kim happy, angelic music would play which foreshadowed that something would happen between them and also gave you a hint about his feelings towards her. Burton used music to show foreshadowing in the movie Dark Shadows as well. When Josette was walking toward the edge of the cliff suspenseful music played create a mood of suspense and fear that Barnabas wouldn’t make it in time and she would fall to her death. One of the many other cinematic techniques Burton often uses in his films is using lighting and color to show
In both Silent Dancing by Judith Ortiz Cofer and Bright Dead Things by Ada Limon, there is a feeling of liminality since both authors are never permanently in one spot. Ada Limon explained it best in an interview on her collection of poems when she said, "It is so hard to love a place that's temporary." As a college student stuck between my hometown, and a city where my heart will never belong to, I understand this state. I understand the feeling of never settling in, of never truly being in love with the noise of it all.
“Sex and the Social Dance” was a streaming video which examined the sexuality of social dances around the world. Regardless of geographical location or decade of popularity, dance conveyed social values. In particular, the sexuality was expressed through physical contact or lack thereof, in the gender roles of the dance, and in the purpose of the dance.
Music: the art of organized noise. The blend of pitch and rhythm combined in different mediums and enjoyed by our ears. A very interpretive art, music isn’t very clearly constricted or defined by one definition. With so many varieties of music, it’s difficult to say what aspect is really the most important. Some people think music’s history and the appreciation of music are the most important aspects to take into consideration. Some think complex in rhythms and melodies make the best music. Some people devote their whole lives to studying one genre of music in order to fully understand how that genre works. While all of these aspects of music are important, none of them can truly be compared with each other on a fair playing field. Music of different genres, eras, and geographic backgrounds were written for different purposes, different people, and different settings. Still, there is still one overarching theme that applies to all forms of music new or old: the way the composer presents his or her creation. The performance and presentation of a work of music is like the icing on the top of a cake. The cake may be the best you’ve ever tasted, but if the icing on the outside doesn’t look appealing or doesn’t taste good, chances are you’ll take a different piece of cake with better looking frosting next time. The performance of music is what appeals most to people. With live performance, an artist must “sell” his or her creation. They must put smile on their face and convey to the audience that this is their music and through the music explain why it’s awesome. They must persevere through whatever the stage, the audience, and their surroundings give them and put on a good show. In today’s popular music though, this aspect of showma...
Throughout this semester we have discussed an array of musical periods ranging from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to more recent modern times. As music progressed through time certain concepts such as melody, harmony, and texture changed along with the introduction of different instruments. In the early phases of music it was more directed toward religious ceremonies, but as time went on it became integrated into everyday life. Even though musical dynamics seem to change as the years go on, it has never failed to create some form of emotional response such as laughter or sadness.
