“Sex and the Social Dance” was a streaming video which examined the sexuality of social dances around the world. Regardless of geographical location or decade of popularity, dance conveyed social values. In particular, the sexuality was expressed through physical contact or lack thereof, in the gender roles of the dance, and in the purpose of the dance. The first social dance explored was ballroom dancing. Ballrooms were a place of courtship; therefore, these dances were always performed by a male, female couple. Traditional gender roles began the dance as the men always asked the women to dance. As the dance began, the bodies were transformed into vehicles to connect these opposite sex partners. However, societal rules applied to this dance because partners must be from within the appropriate class, the intentions proper, and the movements executed in a specific manner. The woman’s role was essentially to avoid a misstep of tripping on the man’s feet, since the male always led the dance. …show more content…
The social dance was an integrated aspect of the culture; therefore from birth, children were taught to wiggle their bum. Both males and females were vital to this dance, because males brought energy while females conveyed beauty. The social dance required both genders to work in unison. This attitude of teamwork rather than gender hierarchy was an essential characteristic apparent throughout their culture, as exemplified by the collaboration used to build canoes and roads. Interestingly, the females asked the males to dance. This act clearly illustrated the important role females played in the society. Although there was no body contact, males and females danced flirtatiously as a public expression of their sexuality. The dance reflected the Polynesian cultural attitude that dance was a healthy public display of physical vitality and sexuality and not
“The Dancer’s gift” is a love story between a young man and woman, Marcel and Samantha. But this novel was written not only to call feelings about love and passion; the main goal was to introduce students to sociological concepts. Overall, the book includes more than 180 sociological terms that flow with the story and closely connected to happening events. Marcel, a black man, arrives from Martinique (an island in the Caribbean Sea), and Samantha, a rich American girl, meet each other in college and fall in love. Both of them face obstacles in their lives: Marcel was grown up in a poor extended but a friendly family, while Samantha was a daughter of rich but divorced parents. Marcel comes to the U.S. to become a professional dancer, while Sam decided to become an attorney at law just like her father. Being lovers they decide to spend their Christmas holidays together and go to New York. Next holidays they go to Marcel’s homeland, Martinique, where they realize that there lives a woman who is pregnant by him. At that time all dreams of Sam just collapse due to this bitter disappointment, which becomes one of the reasons why they break up. Throughout the story, they both meet with numerous social issues such as education, marriage, gender issue, racism, deviance, divorce, religion, race and ethnicity. In this essay, the three main reasons why this novel is an effective tool for learning sociological concepts will be discussed.

I have always been fascinated by the many arts. Around September of last year, I discovered a show that had to do with dancing and singing, which caused me to have a slight interest in the former. In November, my best friend showed me a band that is talented in dancing, and this group has fueled my curiosity. Furthermore, I have already taken a few steps towards learning their dances. I aspire to accomplish the ability to dance because of this group, I am trying to learn the choreography to their songs, and I want to perform in front of people who enjoy watching others dance.
Dance halls were growing increasingly popular, on average, most people attended at least once a week. Dance is a type of sport that usually involves movement of the body, often carried out to different types of music depending on the style. Dance is practiced in many cultures as a form of expression or social relations in a spiritual or performance setting, and is even used to express certain beliefs and ideas. Dance does not have traceable roots and it is not possible to say when exactly dance became a part of culture, but historical evidence shows that dance has been an important aspect of rituals, services, revels, and entertainment since the ancient developments. Since dance was discovered, it has become prevalent. Many different forms and styles of dance are used all around the world today including ballet, swing, hip-hop, and even the tango and salsa.
The meaning behind why we dance is to ultimately get the message across of whatever we want to say, express, or exert. Butoh was the largest and most obscene leap any form of dance ever took when it came to such conservative preferences in what the audience expected out of a performance. It is never going to be about perfect love stories nor adventures to fantastic places. This existence is often a dark one and while some art is an escape to avoid despair, others are meant to convey realism and the truth. For a while in Japan, butoh was the only form of expression that faced the truth in a way that wasn’t painful. It gave the Japanese something to take pride in and much like Hajikata himself, it reminded the Japanese that they were hit but they never fell, they just kept standing back up.
As Jackie Joyner Kersee once said, “The rewards are going to come, but my happiness is just loving the sport and having fun performing” (“Sports Quotes,” 2013). Sports play a major role in entertainment all across the world. Sports can range from driving in NASCAR to playing in the NBA (Careers in Pro Sports, 1999). Sports usually involve teamwork and is fun for everyone. Although sports are supposed to be fun, there is natural competition. Being a feminine art, dance is considered to be just about anything other than a sport. Dancers are trained to the height of their ability, just like other athletes in other sports. Even though the dancer might not perform with their whole dance studio on stage at the same time, the dancers are all apart of the same team. Dancing is not an easy sport to participate in, so if you are looking for a sport that does not require practice then you might want to look into a different sport. There are hour-long practices, healthy diets, and several routines to remember. Normally, if someone is convinced that dance is not a sport, they have not fully engaged or experienced dance. In order to better understand dance, it is important to understand the history of dance, the competition of dance, and the comparison of dance to other sports.
During early times in history dance was seen as a way to heal sickness, a way to break a spell, or perhaps to put a spell on someone.
Dance, like any other art form, is constantly evolving. Its roots are planted in every place in the world. America can thank several countries for creating what the dance industry is today. In the 1600’s dance was used to tell stories in the form of ballets and done as entertainment for the social classes. Renaissance people danced for many different reasons ranging from religious prayer to entertainment at social gatherings. Renaissance dance was highly choreography with simple movement unlike modern dance. Cohen 2001 noted “ On the beat, dancers rose , not fell. They held their upper bodies gracefully upright, keeping their hands mostly Low. The lively movements was in the legs, where complicated steps, kicks, hops, and stamps showed style and virtuosity”(283). The costuming that the dancers adorned themselves were very traditional where as the men wore leggings and tunics while the women were bogged down by heavy layered dresses that covered their legs and feet. These dances were sometimes done as a solo performance, but most of time they were performed as a couple. The dance was always performed with live music that was comprised of the clavichords, a pro-harpsichord, and a small drum to keep the dancers on beat. Cohen pointed out “The elite danced to small bands of a drum, pipes, and several shawms (like oboes); peasants often resorted to bagpipes. Tempos varied from the slow bass dans to the quick saltarello and piva”(283). These dancers were highly skilled graceful entertainer and were in high demand for entertainme...

The European influence involved group dancing until it evolved to male and female partnership through its
