Over the years stories and plots are modernized. Like from the legend of perseus to the lightning thief, using the hero archetypes of the perfect hero and the plot of the story to make it have a more modern taste to audiences. This is the reason that the stories of old are made into stories of new for a newer generation.
In the story of Perseus and Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief, there's a similarity and difference between events that make one of the stories more modern. First, in the legend of Perseus the author states,“Looking into the mirroring shield, Perseus swooped down, and with one deft stroke he cut of the Medusa’s head.” (D'aulaires, 118) This is different from the lightning thief because in the movie percy looks into his phone

screen and hen cuts of its head with his pen sword. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, the first pearl) This is more modernized because it was at a garden compared to the island. He also used his phone instead of his shield. Secondly, Perseus has to go to some nymphs to get the shoes and other artifacts, as is stated, “The nymphs of the north received them kindly.”(D'aulaires, 118) this is how he got the shoes and the other artifacts for his quest, unlike The lightning thief where he got them from Luke. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, Start of the Quest) This is more modern because Luke just had the shoes in a shoebox that he stole from his dad compared to where he had to get flown by Hermes to the island of the nymphs. Lastly, they both earn respect in the end. As the author states, “When at last Perseus and Andromeda died, put them, too, in the sky as constellations.” (D'aulaires, 122)This is different from percy getting his respect from saving the world from a god war. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, Olympus) This is more modern by him going up to olympus from the empire state building, and being put in the sky isn't something that most people would want. Secondly, these stories are made more modern by changing the hero type and archetypes.
First, they are both a perfect hero. This means that they have strength or have a very good reputation. In Perseus he is a perfect hero because he becomes a great king and is made a constellation he is regarded so highly of. As is said by the author, “When at last Perseus and Andromeda died, put them, too, in the sky as constellations.” (D'aulaires, 122) This explains two things that make the original Perseus a perfect hero. This is less modern than the lightning thief because he starts out as not knowing anything about his life as a demigod, and then becoming the most well known demigod of that time by preventing a war. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, beginning) The lightning thief is more modern because it is placed in a city of modern time and he becomes a hero by stopping something that people are more likely to do for everybody's equalness. Secondly, they both have strange births. Perseus, as is said in the text, “Instead, he put Danae and her son, Perseus, in a chest and threw in into the sea.” (D'aulaires, 115) Instead of The lightning thief where he never saw his father and had to grow up with a sewer smelling step dad.(Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, beginning) This step dad thing is more of a modern take on a strange birth. And who uses chests anymore? Lastly, Perseus had Zeus as his father. And as is said in the text, “In the shape of a golden shower to her.” …show more content…
(D'aulaires, 115) The lightning thief has poseidon as his dad, and he just walked up to the woman he wanted and was normal. Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, beginning) This is how Hero types and archetypes make The lightning thief a more modern story than the original. Lastly, the theme of the stories have affected them as well.
First, both stories are brains over brawns. In Perseus he uses his brain to think of a way to make the grey sisters tell him where the nymphs of the north are. In the lightning thief he has to use his brain to figure out that he can control water and stop Luke. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, Olympus) This is more modern because he uses water towers and the winged boots instead of being flown around by Hermes. God transportation is a thing of the past. Secondly, the villain in Perseus story is the evil king as is said in the text, “But her beauty brought no joy to her father.” This explains that he was not happy with his daughter and wanted a son. In the lightning thief the villain is Luke. This is because he wants a war between the gods. His identity is hidden as villain until the end of the movie, making him a seem nice villain. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, the Underworld) This is more modern because it adds a plot twist and makes you want to keep watching so that you can find out who the lightning thief is. Lastly, in Perseus, the text states that, “ ‘Slay the monster Medusa and bring me her head’ ”, This is the quest he was given. In the lightning thief Hades takes his mother and he has to find the pearls save his mom and stop a war. (Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief) This is more modern because it's more complex instead of just one main task he has to do all of these other side things.
This is how plots make a story more modern for different audiences. The story of perseus has been modernized to the lightning thief using hero archetypes like the perfect hero as well as hero traits and the overall plot of the story. This has affected the newer story making it more modern and wanted by new audiences. These are the ways that the story of Perseus have been modernized into the lightning thief.
In the poem Perseus the character is Medusa's victims. That is the only one that is different from the other story. The setting isn’t as different as the other story but it is the only setting it is Medusa's cave. The events are that Perseus sees Medusa's victims then Perseus wanted to kill or destroy Medusa. Finally, the conflict of the story is that Perseus has a thirst to kill, its a problem because he wants to kill innocent people.
The beginning of the myth of Cronus is about the father Uranus and the mother Gaea had children and the father did not like how one of them look so the other brothers took down their father Uranus .The middle of the myth is about is that Cronus, one of the children got married and he was afraid that his child would rise up against so he swallowed every one of them.At the end of the myth, Zeus one of his children did not get swallowed , he had a plan to get his siblings back and he did and he took down his father just like the prophet said would happen. In the myth had a prophecy that would someday happen and they both tried to not make it come true, but it still happened and they were both wrong trying to skip the prophet Cronus and his Titan brothers to rise up against their father and save their other brothers Cronus did
Percy Jackson is a very interesting character but he’s more interesting when they keep some his great characteristics in the movie. There are many differences along with similarities in the comparison between the book and the movie of Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief. One of the major differences between the two was how in the book Luke and Percy never fought for the bolt because Luke took it, but in the movie Luke and Percy have an epic battle for the bolt. A good similarity with the two is that they do a very good job in describing Percy’s background and how they were in the Lotus hotel and got stuck their for hours but realistically was 5 days. I will be discussing and some of the main similarities and differences
My original thought when comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie and Classical mythology was that there would be many more references to the myth of Perceus than any other myth throughout the movie in its entirety. That’s where I was wrong. After watching the movie again and researching the different hero myths my opinion has changed. My new thoughts are that the movie is not influenced by the myth of Perceus any more than other hero myths. The movie ties together many different heroes’ stories and mixes them together to make a wonderful story about a young boy. The movie was based on a book series written by Rick Riordan.
Being able to compare such characters can lie in the fact that they were both a castaway at some point in their glorious lives and both were saved by a love that appeared as a result of such disdain. Contrasting them, on the other hand, is explained by a godly versus humanly intervention. For Pericles, there were no Gods that banished him or saved him. For Odysseus, however, in both situations it was an involvement of the Gods. This dissimilarity between the two characters can help ex plain why some readers, in my opinion, will fell that Pericles is more relatable than
The similarities between Odysseus and Jason are as vast as their differences, yet their main connections show their their main difference. The similarity of the two previously unsung heroic types is exactly what separates them, each man is a different type of the new hero that came about after the brutish and brawny warriors like Achilles and Hector. Each can be seen as a hero or as a perverse designation of the past warriors and heroic ideals. It is their journeys that define them as heros, Jason though he could not have made it alone succeeds in his endeavors and Odysseus although he made it home alone in the end he is the valiant lover and father. The endings show a major difference between the two characters as Odysseus is redeemed in the end for his good qualities, Jason become less of a heroic figure as he discards his ever helpful wife Medea.
The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan is a fantasy- adventure novel that is based on Greek mythology. It's the second novel in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy Jackson has been having nightmares about his satry friend Grover Underwood. The first dream involving Grover running from an unknown force and hiding in wedding shop. At school a group of Laestrygoians attack Percy and his classmates in a game of dodgeball, but is saved by one of his friends Tyson and Annabeth Chase, one of his friends from camp. Annabeth takes Percy and Tyson to Camp Half Blood, the only safe place for demigods, which are kids who are children of humans and gods. All three of them take the
This man cares more about the wants and needs of the people around him then his own. Percy is brave in the toughest of situations, and stands up for what is right. Percy Jackson has even saved the world twice, by leading armies he organised on his own.
...arity as the former parallels the latter in several aspects. Laura and Persephone are essentially the same person, with their resemblances being present in their close relationships with their mothers and their desires to break free from confinement. The setting in both stories is embellished as too perfect, almost unreal, which is evidence that a dreadful event will occur later on. In The Myth of Persephone, a young girl discovers her calling and transforms into a stunning, admirable Goddess, while in The Garden Party, Laura transitions into adulthood, both by witnessing death. Over time, stories have developed a connection to each other – they are all inspired by the story of humanity. If one author was able to interpret and borrow so many aspects from one myth to enrich the reader’s experience, the list of other writers that have taken the same path is endless.
The hero’s journey they had in common was The ordeal, Meeting of the Mentor, and Return with Elixir. In Perseus, he killed Medusa in a different way. “Looking into the mirroring shield, Perseus swooped down, and with one deft stroke he cut off the Medusa’s head.” ( pg 118, D'aulaires). In Percy Jackson, it was modernized on the way Percy killed Medusa. “Percy used his phone as a Mirror to see Medusa’s reflection to kill her with the sword Chiron gave him” ( Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). When Perseus got his shield and sword, he got his weapons from the gods Athena and
Overall, Riordan uses different mythological characters, to create a modern adaptation of the story of Perseus. Riordan does so in a way that a younger audience can understand and even relate to in this day and age. The main point Riordan is trying to get across, is this idea of heroism, and using children’s imaginations to make this happen. However, he doesn’t only use Percy to be portrayed as the hero, he also uses Grover, and also Annabeth, who both help Percy along his quest.
Perseus grew up to be a strong fearless lad. One day he claimed to King Polydectes, “Oh, Host and Benefactor, I owe you too much gratitude to repay you with the common gift of a horse. I shall bring you the head of Medusa!”(Evslin.110) Perseus set off for his mission, he encountered the gray sisters and the apple nymphs forcing them to give him information about Medusa’s location. Then he went to Medusa with three gifts from the apple nymphs: a sword, a shield, and the Cap of Darkness. Successfully Perseus killed Medusa and while bringing Medusa’s head towards the island of Sephiros. He encountered a sea serpent who was creating trouble by the nearby town of Cepheus. Perseus drew out Medusa’s head and turned the sea serpent into stone. Throughout Perseus’s mission he encountered many obstacles and he handled each challenge in a smart and clever way, unlike King
...Journey and examine the heroic parallels between Percy Jackson and the great Greek heroes Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules through a timeless lense.
The legend of Perseus is told in many different ways, in two particular ways they are similar but yet quite different. The movie Clash of the Titans is primarily a story of Perseus and his dangerous journey to save the princess Andromeda, while the Edith Hamilton’s Mythology is a story of Perseus, his relationship with his mother and journeys to her.
In the movie, Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, fights the monsters of the underworld to stop them from taking over the heavens and earth. The story according to the Greeks, Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, goes on an adventure to recieve the head of Medusa to save his mom from marrying King Polydectes and along the way falls in love Princess Andromeda. Between the two stories there are similarities and differences in each version.
