To ask me to list my favorite books, movies, songs, and other miscellaneous forms of entertainment would be such a difficult task. This question always stressed me out because there are simply so many great movies and books. With that being said, if I were to pick a book and movie that I have read so many times that the pages are worn down and dog-eared and a movie that I viewed enough times that I could pass as a cast member, then I present to you: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews. Both this film and book are widely acclaimed pieces of literature and thespianism. Both of these works deal with many of the same issues such as love, war, the loss of innocence, and leading female protagonist …show more content…
I found this book at a used bookshop that smelled of must and dreams and I can honestly say that I will probably never spend three dollars so wisely ever again. I considered myself well read and a slight history “buff” I thought I knew all that there was to know about World War II and the spread of communism, yet I knew nothing about its impact in Afghanistan. For someone who has many Afghan friends, speaks a little Pashto, and has been lectured at by old Afghani Aunties in the Mosque, I labeled myself as being well rounded in Afghan history until I saw how culture, religion, and politics were so intricately intertwined in one of the most barren landscapes of the twenty-first century. A Thousand Splendid Suns guided me through this quagmire of a country that faced attacks from Mongols, the Muslims, the Russians and ended with the invasion of the American Army. It showed how love can coexist in times of war, how society changed, and the death of innocence. I learned that sometimes the most beautiful things can come from the most hateful people and the opposite. It is just one of those books that need to be taught in school to show the beauty and ugliness of
What I liked most about it was reading from two different perspectives and how those different perspectives met through the book.
I believe the most important concept that I gained from reading the book was to remain faithful, in good times and in bad. Walking blindly can be very terrifying, but God always has a plan for each and every one of us. At times, the plan remains unseen, and that should not deter or slow me on the path that my heart is yearning
I always looked at death as such a sad thing that is eventually going to occur to everyone. However, after reading this book, it made me realize death can actually be a beautiful thing. Death allows a person to go to a next life, one where they will be loved and others will be there for them. It was interesting to be able to read about stories that these hospice care workers witnessed themselves. I have experienced a few deaths within my life and I never coped with them very well. After reading this book, I honestly believe I will be able to look at the positive side of death and be able to deal with my emotions better. I can also help others surrounding me deal with a death that they are experiencing. This book was filled with information that I loved learning. For example, I never knew that a dying person can choose a time to die. The thought of this never occurred to me before. I always thought that when it was someone’s time to go, they had no choice. But, a dying person can “put off” passing on until they see a certain person or event that has great significance in their life. Nevertheless, there are still people who will wait to die until they’re all alone in the room. This book makes you think of real life situations and think what you would do in them. Taken as a whole, it was a very in depth book that changes the way you would naturally perceive
Over this entire novel, it is a good novel for children. It train children how to think logically, and notes people we should cherish our family, and people around us, very educate. Children can learn true is always been hide.
I can relate this book to my life in many ways; it was easier for me to relate to this book because were both 18 year old girls who want to live life the right way. Also I don’t want to live life trying to be like everyone else, so this was really encouraging to me. A part that helped me was the part about confidence and how important that is. Its important to have confidence in your faith because say you get in a situation you can protect your faith and stand up for what you believe. Another part that I can really apply to my life was how when people were talking about her she didn’t even beg to know. Personally whenever I hear that someone was talking about me, I really want to know what they said! This helped me to learn that why fill my brain with negativity sinful gossip, because that’s not what Jesus would do.
I am not the kind of person that likes lies, double motives, and violence, so naturally, I do not politics and war. Obviously with the storyline’s setting taking place in Afghanistan, war and politics would be inevitable. During the exposition of the story when the background and history of the war was revealed, I felt so bored. Then towards the end, the deceiving actions taken by the U.S. Government and Army made me immensely ashamed. The particular fact that the military and government hid and twisted that Pat Tillman was killed because of friendly fire made me feel angry and disappointed. Despite my strong feelings against war and politics, I am aware that this is a book about a hero’s time in Afghanistan, so I am able to ...
In particular, I learned about power v. weakness. The powerful make the weak feel vulnerable; therefore, the weak feel the need to follow the powerful. Power is not always good because it can make a person lose self-control. A line from the story reads, "Montag's hand closed like a mouth, crushed the book with devotion,
A Comparison A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury and The Star by H.G. Wells
Although this book had no major affect on me, I learned how a boy can go through traumatic experiences and still have the will power to keep going on. That was the only thing that really affected me in the whole book.

There are many lessons that we can get from this book, which the first thing is not to be biased and avoid being racism. The prophet Muhammad said “All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab as no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab: also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white- except by piety and good action”. Moreover, we have to bear in mind that a bad person does not necessarily a forever bad person. We should not discriminate and make a fast judgement like Malcolm used to say “Don’t be in such a hurry to condemn a person because he doesn’t do what you do or think as you think. There was a time when you didn’t know what you know today”.
Afghanistan; Taliban controlled, discrimination and love everywhere yet nowhere at the same time. It’s a nation where culture and tradition are of immense importance, especially to the older generation. Over 53% of Afghan population is below the poverty line, making the country one of the Earth’s poorest. Life would be lived on a day to day basis, not knowing if it’s safe to be outside, when...
middle of paper ... ... ter. It has enlightened me. Before reading this book I could not have imagined the horrific truths of only a short while ago, in a place not so far away. Everyone could gain something from this book, for me it demonstrates that the human race was not, and is not as civilized as it appears.
Hamid’s fiction deals with varied issues: from infidelity to drug trade in the subcontinent and, in the light of contemporary developments, about Islamic identity in a globalised world. His first novel, Moth Smoke (2000) won a Betty Trask Award and was shortlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Award in 2000. His other novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2007) was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, the Decibel Award and the South Bank Award for Literature. This book serves as a testament to his elegant style as he deftly captures the straining relationship between America and Pakistan.
...incredible beautiful things he creates for us, we can either take advantage of those things or we can share them with people that might not understand this or see it in there lives. The last thing i learned was that life can show the worst things, such as death, or destruction to your life. The lose of a job or anything bad that might happen, we can blame it on God or we can pray to him to help you work through hard times like those. In chapter 4 it talked it about how God was going to still be faithful to them and the kingdom will still be restored and brought back to power. We need to be faithful to God even though something bad could happen. Lamentations teaches us about the hard times if we don’t repent and things can build up. There is a lot of grief in the book but if you trust in God the his plan go and follow and that whats most important.
