A Case Study of Academic Integrity (case #5) Recently, more and more people choose study abroad to enrich their learning in order to obtain more opportunities for their future life. As we all know, academic integrity is not strangeness to us during our study period. “Most colleges and universities have academic integrity policies that are rule-based, defining what constitutes cheating, plagiarism, and forgery in the academic community and their consequences, ranging from getting no credit for an assignment to suspension of studies at the university” (Tammy, Dillon, & Camp, 2017, p. 1159). Before she begins her Master program, she need to prepare personal statement assignment for her PROV 502 class, but she plans to go to Orlando with her friends during her spring vacation. After her vocation she must finish her assignment so she decided reuse her personal statement when she was undergraduate student, someone help her finished a draft personal statement. There are lot of contributing factors can lead to plagiarism. Such as the weak of moral awareness does not make notice the seriousness of the consequence of plagiarism. (Gunnel & Rosander , 2009), and the lack of writing skills. For example, some international students do not have the advantage of writing when they came to other country to study, even a few of people don’t know how to use citation in their paper. (Monica & Quinn, 2000). Moreover, time limitation is also an important factor in plagiarism. (McCuen, 2008). Generally, the professor post assignment will base on time period, and this is lead to students have big pressure on their assignment. Based on this reason, some of students choose plagiarism. One reason is laziness; a student may decide to plagiarize an author’s work due to the fact that they are lazy and do not feel like using their brain to put it in their own words. Another reason a student may decide to plagiarize is because of time; a student make have a very right schedule due to work, other classes, etc. So in this case, they feel like they do not have enough time to put a lot of effort and thinking into a paper, so they choose to copy the author’s ideas. A final reason may include depression and stress; one student may have a difficult life due to excessive amounts of depression or family issues everyday outside of school. Therefore, the student feels the need to plagiarize because they feel that they are not well enough to put an author’s ideas in their own words; if it is family related then may feel like their family is not being supportive and feel that they may never make it through

Academic honesty is defined as the use of one's own work, this includes thoughts, materials and workings, in the endeavours of writing papers, taking exams (online or campus based), and other assessable material (Harder, 2014). Academic integrity is the ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as prevention of plagiarism; upholding a high academic standard; honesty and rigour in research (Kirk, 1996). Plagiarism is one of many dishonesties that occurs and is the most common. In 2010, Johanson published an article that stated there may be a correlation with the recent abundance of technology and the rise of student dishonesty. "Access to high-technology has made cheating more convenient, flexible, and efficient…”(Johanson, 2010)
Here at Westminster College, academic integrity is one of the main areas of focus put upon the many students that attend. It is a standard that every student should adhere to and if they don’t then they are subject to serious consequences. Academic integrity is defined by Westminster as a “central to the purpose and pursuit of any academic community”. Westminster College expects all students to be honest and maintain a set of high archetypes while still applying themselves in the classroom and in their respective sport. In today’s academic world many students are challenged when it comes to writing, or so they think. Many of them believe that they can go on the internet and use whatever is needed for the paper they are writing. Maybe it is a lack of knowledge or confidence that they are capable of expressing themselves on paper. The majority of the time many students procrastinate until the last minute to write a paper. There are few thing students need to learn about plagiarism such as what is plagiarism, how to cite sources correctly, methods of detecting plagiarism, and what academic punishment they face when caught.
College students face a variety of pressures and have a variety of motives that lead to intentional Plagiarism and unknowing or unintentional acts of Plagiarism. Most students plagiarize because they are overwhelmed. Writing assignments require a lot of time and a long thought process which may be a reason students feel overwhelmed at times.
In the recent advancements of modern communication and technology, people have also gained the ability to spread their own thoughts and unsourced information to a larger audience quicker than ever before. Accordingly, this has allowed people to share syndicate information without any research or backing and with no fear of being silenced or reprimanded. Situations like this have led to lives ruined, careers ended, and colleges losing integrity due to no limitation at all. I propose that LaGrange College approve of the policies I have derived in order to maintain and withhold the integrity that the institution has earned for itself throughout its years.
All the above examples are reflective of a concept called academic integrity. This essay will be discussed two questions based around the general topic of ‘Academic Integrity’ in assignment completed by undergraduate students. Living up to other people’s standards and trying to go above and beyond the average to achieve can be stressful on students. Some students will go to the lengths of plagiarizing others and not relying on their own hard work to get the job done. Plagiarism has become common place among students without regards to the morality of the act. A student can cheat for multiple reasons, whether it be that the student does not have enough courage or pride in their work, or they feel that they have to achieve a set of goals by being pressured by their family.
Plagiarism is a very serious topic to be dealt with, due to the fact that it can damage one’s future very severely. It is done often by students in high school and other institutes such as universities and colleges. People plagiarize intentionally and sometimes even unintentionally. The people who plagiarize intentionally are people who don’t really care about their future and career. The people who plagiarize unintentionally are people who do not cite their work properly and completely. Most people that plagiarize do not get a good mark and most likely have to face consequences such as failure, suspension or the chance of being expelled. In conclusion it is believed that one should not put his/her future at risk and try to expand their mind through the process of critical thinking independently, so they do not have to make the mistake of plagiarizing.
The last thing a student can do to avoid plagiarism is to check over their paraphrasing and quoting to make sure that they haven’t missed anything that may make their paper violate the plagiarism rule. Always cite sources used to gather information and sources used to incorporate graphs, tables, and etc. into the paper.
Plagiarism is a serious offense and a growing trend in our society today. Some may associate plagiarism with the idea of taking someone else’s writing and making it their own. In fact plagiarism involves anything that is copied or taken and said to be of your own work. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work, as by not crediting the author”. In fact this definition covers all types of cheating and misrepresentation of ones own work. There are many numbers and statistics that can be found on the amount of individuals that have admitted to cheating. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
