Academic dishonesty is a very strict policy at California Baptist University, breaking this policy can result in as simple as a warning but also escalade into expulsion from the University. Students at California Baptist University are required and held accountable to honoring these rules and are expected to obey the simple guide lines regarding citations, and properly citing sources, cheating, bribery and fraud regarding classwork and homework. There are many key points and essential rules and regulations required by students located in the Student Handbook which will be addressed later in this entry.
There are many main points located within the Student Handbook regarding plagiarism. One major violation is “looking at another students test
or quiz.” This is a general rule for most college courses which is absolutely unacceptable for all classes within the University. Related to this comes another key point within the handbook, which is “copying information from any other outside source without proper citation.” This means not citing a source correctly or stealing someone’s work without giving them the credit. Another violation of the student handbook regarding plagiarism is “attempting to engage in fraud in the submission of any assignment.” Lastly one very important violation regarding plagiarism is the “attempt to influence, corrupt, or bribe any member of the University faculty for a better grade or any other advantage in the class.” These are some of the many very important violations included within the Student Handbook. Attempting to bribe faculty, cheating on tests, engaging in fraud with submission of homework or any other type of assignment, and most importantly not properly citing sources or taking credit for others work are some of the key essential violations. All of these violations can result in expulsion from the University and can ruin ones college career.
The essay, “Standing Up for the Power of Learning,” by Jay Mathews explained how one of many students was accused of academic dishonesty. During the regular school session of the year 2001, three fourths of 187 students at Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) were found guilty of cheating. This was because they collaborated on an assignment in a computer science (CS) course with friends. By communicating with others about the project, the students violated the course honor code that prohibited the discussion among students for that particular class.
The first thing observers will notice is the “readability issue” when they read George Brown College’s student code of conduct and discipline, in particular, the part of the definition of plagiarism. Honesty and integrity are two major core Catholic and humanist values that many students in modern times seem to lack. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, honesty is defined as "the quality of being fair and truthful." Honesty plays a huge role in our society and daily lives. Honesty is a key characteristic that makes up a person, and defines who they truly are. Usually, if a person is very honest, which according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary means, “the quality of being honest and fair.” As you can see, the definition of honesty and integrity go hand in hand. Just as Spencer Johnson tells us, “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” Without honesty, there is absolutely no integrity. In the past few years, many major corporations conducted tests to determine how much of the world’s population was considered, “honest.” WalletTest.com conducted an experiment in which one hundred wallets were left on the streets on purpose, filled with a good amount of cash, and a picture identification card to explicitly show who the wallet belonged to. Of those one hundred wallets, seventy four of them were returned and twenty six were not. The sample of people they used were of mixed gender, age, and race, giving a good testing sample. The results were good, showing that most people were honest, and the honest people outnumbered the dishonest people nearly three to one. Honesty and integrity does not only play a large role in daily life situations, however. Honesty and integrity play a large role in academics in different levels of expertise: Elementary, High School, and College.
Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.

UMUC’s Policy 150.25 - Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism states what is expected of students to uphold academic integrity. It lists plagiarism as its top reason for a charge of academic dishonesty. It also describes the procedures for handling the charge of plagiarism. Plagiarism is serious offense on the academia level but does not have official law stature. On the other hand you have Copyright law in which penalties for infringement include civil and criminal penalties.
Plagiarism is a very serious subject to talk about. It doesn’t sound like it is that big of a deal but very serious things can come out of it.
