The 9/11 Story in Fragments, created by Steven Zorn, for the Smithsonian Institution, tells the stories of the horrific encounters when the World Trade Center in New York, and the Pentagon in Washington were struck down by hijacked commercial airliners. The film, based on factual evidence, uses individual narratives, and graphical effects to highlight the events along with personal objects that belonged to the victims and survivors of 9/11. The short film is an historical document that recounts that tragic day, when lives were lost, heroes were made, and America was forever changed. The document highlights the events of the coordinated, terrorist attacks, and massive cleanup efforts. The document is referred as the ‘people’s story,’ as the stories are expressed by the people. The 9/11 events will always be preserved in our memories. Evidence was focused throughout the film on the firefighters, the first to be dispatched at the scene. Soft focus …show more content…
close-up shots of the massive fire, and thick smoke confirmed the enormous atrocities. A few times in the film, the video slowly turned to a collection of fire suits, helmets, ventilators, masks, and front section of a fire truck, which signified the perished firemen, and their courageous work to save stranded people. Firemen fulfil their duty, and never leave anyone behind, but the monstrosity of the fire, and eventual fall of the towers indicated the hopelessness. A snippet of one fireman’s tears was revealed, and a glimpse of a uniform along with a dog’s collar signified the partnerships of man, and man’s best friend. The interviews took place in front of a navy blue backdrop, which gave some sense of formality, calmness and neutrality, which was a huge contrast to the commanding images. It may have been the intentions of the introspective film director, who wanted to give a sense of calm, contrasted with the powerful visuals. The assortment of varied still shots, selected in black and white, and some framed as documents, captured the dramatic scenes of the billowing, smoke, and soot covered crew. Intermittent close shots of a plane flying low towards the viewer, across innocent, blue skies acts as a reminder throughout the film, of the terror. Snippets of accessioned objects at the Smithsonian Institution included a Blackberry, as these phones were the most reliable, as they stayed connected in the overcrowded airways.
A snippet of an accessioned camera and a Sony video camera indicated their significance in capturing the events of 9/11. A reenactment of a returned briefcase found in the rubble was returned to a surviving victim. Scenes such a these added to the evidence, and confirmed the lives of real people who became the victims. Heroism is depicted by a wife, Barbara K. Olsen who made desperate calls to her husband during the fight to reveal the confrontation on board the flight in efforts to detain the hijackers, and save the plane. Narratives described the perish of Jeff and John, and well loved flight attendant Lorraine Bay. The film can also be viewed as an American hero story, which is told by ‘the people’. It is the ‘people’s story,’ but after viewing the film, one might wonder if the story is adequately represented by all the people involved in
9/11. It must be taken into account that ninety countries lost citizens in 9/11, and many others had become naturalized American citizens. Snippets of their stories would have helped to complete ‘the people’s story’. One hundred and forty thousand visitors frequent The World Trade Towers daily. It was a missed opportunity for the film to provide a clip of a tourist who might have fled. One thousand three hundred children became orphaned so why hadn’t the film consider a snippet of a victims and their children? The documentary, therefore, can be somewhat viewed as a representation of American National heritage, as diversity, on board the ill fated flights, and in the Big Apple was not captured. The impact of massive tourism associated with the towers had also been discounted. Additionally, the fate of the victim’s children, on that day, was overlooked as snippets of photos taken from wallets or office desks was not included; a few objects should have been found in the rubble. The 9/11 Story in Fragments, although exceptionally well done, indeed missed some of the subtle biases underpinning America. An edited version of the film might consider a diverse cross section of America who were severely impacted by the 9/11 catastrophes.
“Attack” shows, there is always a way to survival. This is true when the mom believes there are survivors, also when they go into the woods and don’t give up looking for survivors, and most of all, when the mom and brother Johnny come back with two rooster survivors. I have learned that, if you believe sometimes something wonderful can always happen. One of the main struggles in the world is it is very hard to survive for some people but, many people can pull through. As Carl Sagan says “Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.” This story has helped me realize, that life can be hard sometimes but you just have to pull through. Now I would like to go out, and give people shelter and food to help them
The official story of 9/11 is a conspiracy theory in that the government claims 19 hijackers conspired together to hijack four planes and create terror in the world. Four American airplanes were hijacked; two were driven into the World Trade Centers and the third airplane into the Pentagon. The fourth airplane suspected target was the White House, but it was diverted by the brave men and women aboard that hijacked airplane, and crashed the airline jet before it could reach its target. It was like time stood still as America watched through television broadcast these unbelievable and horrifying events taking place. The reports told of the smell the jet fuel, burning flesh, and people jumping out windows to their death to escape the flames. When the two bravura structures tumbling down, rescuers, (police officers, firefighters, and ambulance drivers and techs) were caught in the mast and lost their lives doing their job trying to save lives.
..., precision lenses, recorders, sounds consoles, lights, reflecting screens, auxiliary motors, cartons of supplies, electricians, sound technicians, and cameramen,” when a single water pump was nowhere to be found. It is borderline inconceivable that all this technology could be present to document such a tragedy, and none present to save the girl’s life.
The camera zooms into the faces of the characters speaking, directing the audience’s attention to what they are saying making this information seem important and true. In the scene where David Palmer finds out about the nuclear bomb in Los Angeles, the camera first focuses on Eric Rayburn who is telling Palmer about the bomb but then zooms into Palmer’s face to show his expression at receiving this information. When Palmer is told the bomb will go off today, he asks, “How do we know this?” Rayburn replies with a computer image of Mahmoud and the camera zooms into the suspected terrorist’s face. The camera in this scene moves quickly from face-to-face, following the conversation visually. Additionally, the camera captures the expressions of...
George W. Bush’s “9/11 Address to the Nation” is a speech in which he talks about the catastrophic event on September eleventh, 2001. Two airplanes crash into the Twin Towers in New York City on this day, shocking the entire world. He addresses this speech to the people of America on the night of the disastrous event, to let the people of the United States know what is going on. This speech explains how the United States is a strong country, the motives behind the event, as well as to bring the United States together and stronger.
The Strange Fascination of People of Turning Catastrophes Into a Media Event This opinion article tries to outline why the destruction of New York is presented in films and takes the 11th September terrorist attack as a case study and it attempts to find reasons why disasters that happen in real life remain stamped in the imagination of the human psyche. The destruction of the New York skyline has long been an obsession for the American film industry. It is depicted a lot in the Planet of the Apes series when in the first film's memorable closing sequence we see Charlton Heston finding the Statue of liberty half buried in the sand.
The documentary stress testimonial demonstrations. The Naudets brother 9/11 is a testimonial demonstration of and by the brothers as they witnessed the crashes and present the whole time. The footage is evidence they were there followed by commentary in interview form of question that as an audience might have. The filmmakers direct encounter make us feel as though were also seeing the crash happen as it opens us to their thoughts and the thoughts of those who were watching outside as Gideon films his interaction with them as they say what they saw explaining to other people who were outside as well but did not witness the crash, he films different people saying that to the camera and to other people. Gideon also films people crying outside as they interact with him pointing at the building saying that someone they know is inside and some words failing to come out. In the documentary there is commentary made for some of the footages and then there is commentary to which they show the interviewees making their testimonies and substantiated by a video or images for instance when the firefighters carried the priest’s body to the church and at the end the brothers saying how they felt after the

September 11th, 2001 is one of the worst days in the United States of America’s history by far. It all began at 8:45am when a stolen airplane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Many people believed that this was...
First shock, then terror, followed by sorrow and lastly rage were my emotions on September 11th, 2001 when a hijacked airliner crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City. Tunh! Tunh! Tunh! All circuits are busy; please try again at a later time. This message kept repeating as I tried to call my cousin in New York, who was working in the South Tower. At the time the American Airlines flight 11 just moments earlier crashed into the North Tower. I sat in my house in shock and terror. Then at 9:05 am, about twenty minutes after the first collision, United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the South Tower. I began to feel the knot in my throat getting tighter and tighter until I just finally began crying. I still didn’t have any word from my cousin and when both of the buildings plummeted to the streets below, I thought for sure he was dead. When I returned home, my mother informed me that he had gotten out before the buildings went down. Turning on the television was another ordeal in itself. All of the news stations repeatedly exhibited the buildings plunging to the ground. I felt extreme sorrow for the families of those who had not made it out alive. They had to relive that horrible moment over and over again. I was also outraged. How could such an act be committed on American soil? The only way we can answer this question is to look at the terrorists who could do such an act and what possible reasons they have for doing it.
September 11, 2001 marked one of the most tragic events in United States history. As a way to assure the safety and wellbeing of U.S. citizens shortly after being attacked by al-Qaeda, President Bush stated, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts may shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve”. Although President Bush was seen a source of security during a time of need, many citizens felt that his words were not genuine and part of a dramatic story the government wanted its people to believe. Despite the side taken, both perspectives of the argument can agree that the U.S. was attacked by a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda. On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and the fourth into a field in rural Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the terrorist to try and regain control of the plane. This is the story the government wants its people to believe. However, the truths about the attacks on 9/11 are much more frightening. On September 11th, 2001, the United States government betrayed its citizens by allowing the destructive attacks on the Twin Towers, WTC-7, the Pentagon, and Shanksville.
Most Americans will never forget the date of September 11, 2001. It was a tragic day in New York City that changed the United States forever. We celebrate this day annually to remember all the innocent victims and first responders who lost their lives. Five years after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center, construction began on the 9/11 Memorial. "The memorial represents a fulfillment of the collective obligation to remember the victims and to reaffirm a respect for life" (Blais, and Rasic 212). This memorial includes beautiful architecture and is visited by thousands of people every day. Even though there were obstacles to overcome during construction, the National September 11 Memorial flourished into a beautiful site with significant
The burning Twin Towers, the vapor trails from an airliner, and the date 09.11.01 all visually clue the viewer into remembering this painful event in American history (Ankerson [0-6.88 seconds]). As
“Cameras do not provide a neutral window into reality, but they do provide visual evidence that is often far better than what fact-finders would have otherwise. Even when camera evidence is flawed, it is often far better than eyewitness accounts, especially when such eyewitness accounts are given long after the events” (Blitz, 2015). Eye witness accounts can vary widely, especially in high stress situations that happen very quickly. People frequently cannot remember the details, where camera evidence can be much more effective in catching the things a person may not recall.
Horrifying videos and photos of violent and sinister acts that shook America to its core, a scene that is likely to never be forgotten, or would it? Time took the deadly sting out of the feelings felt on 9/11. With this, life resumed for the unaffected and they allowed themselves to be ignorant of the ongoing threat. All must understand the world still has a war on terror and the threat is still alive and well. Though memorializing this event may raise the public's awareness, it will never stop the threat.
