Recommended: Overcoming adversity
In life, everyone needs to survive in some way. Some people may have to survive from hunger, or maybe they have to survive without a home, or without a family. How you try to survive makes all the difference. In the short story “Attack,” by Ralph Fletcher a boy and his family’s roosters are attacked. But, everyone still believes that some roosters are alive. “Attack” shows, there is always a way to survival. This is true when, the mom believes there are survivors, also when two people in the family go into the woods and don’t give up looking for roosters that have survived, and most of all when the mom and Johnny a brother come back with two rooster survivors.
The first way in which the story shows there is always a way to survive is, when the mother believes in survivors, at the very beginning of the story readers see, that the roosters have been attacked. The family is very depressed but, the mother still believes in survivors. According to the author, “Some got killed, no doubt. But some could have escaped and still be alive.” This shows the mother believed that some roosters were still alive because during the middle of the story, one of the brothers

“Attack” shows, there is always a way to survival. This is true when the mom believes there are survivors, also when they go into the woods and don’t give up looking for survivors, and most of all, when the mom and brother Johnny come back with two rooster survivors. I have learned that, if you believe sometimes something wonderful can always happen. One of the main struggles in the world is it is very hard to survive for some people but, many people can pull through. As Carl Sagan says “Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.” This story has helped me realize, that life can be hard sometimes but you just have to pull through. Now I would like to go out, and give people shelter and food to help them
Every bomb that falls blossoms new hope in the heart’s of the Jews because it means that the possible idea of liberty may be turning into reality. Again, without the hope in this situation there would be no will to prevail. In another instance in the text, the words that are spoken “‘Perhaps the Russians will arrive before…’” (pg. 81) This situation takes place near the end of the book and is a very crucial part of understanding the hope throughout this memoir. Perhaps, is the key word in this specific example because it rings with hope, if you believe even in the slightest something good will happen, you will believe that it is possible, your actions will show your willingness to prevail. Not only does this show how hope makes the reality of surviving bearable, but it also shows how when hope is prevalent in a community, it is easier to be willing to prevail. There is good in having hope in the sense that it can make an ideal of surviving into more of a reality, therefore making it easier to prevail. Throughout Night there are many situations where this is very relevant and although it is very hard to look for the better times in a memoir like this, it is
Birdy, who is a new soldier, fears that he will end up dead during the war. He said,“Then I realized that it was the noise, the constant booming, that just filled my guts with a trembling sensation. I knew if I heard the boom I was safe because whatever had exploded hadn't hit me. But it was the idea that at any moment it could be all over, that I could be dead or lie in the sand twisting in agony, that filled me with a terror that I hadn't known before. Terror. It wasn't just being scared. It was a feeling that was taking me over. I knew it but I hoped no one else saw it,” (Myers 71). This description of Birdy's fear develops the idea that in Iraq, surviving emotionally during the war is important to be alive. Walter Dean Myers wants the reader
...ng the underlying theme that drives the story and the movie, propels the reader and viewer to rekindle the desire to hope above all else because hope is all one has in devastating as well as dire needs. Hope overcomes despair, permits others to see your “inner light” to develop integrity which connects with honesty and trust. Hope is the inspiration to continue to live regardless of the circumstances. Red may have narrated; “Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.” But, Andy Dufresne states it best: “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
As you go through life you realize that there is always someone doing worse than you are. Sometimes you get so caught up in your own life you forget that there are people out there wishing they only had your problems. Your personal issues could be easier or difficult on the next person. When reading the memoir “A long way gone” by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael reaches rock bottom in his life and each day there are new experiences that normal people wouldn't face in a lifetime. When watching the film “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete” Mister and Pete showed people in their community that anybody could figure out how to survive if they had to. “A long way gone” and “The inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete”
To start with, we can see a multitude of real life examples of survival just through our television. Reality TV shows like Naked and Afraid and Man vs. Wild focus on people being pushed into survival situations. These shows help to demonstrate just how far humans will go to survive; participants eat bugs, create tools, and brave diseases. That’s not to mention all of the other real cases in which people have had to go out of their way to live. It happens every day, enough that we consider them commonplace. From events as big as the influx of Syrian refugees making dangerous journeys to Europe, trying to escape danger, to normal people having to take care of themselves after being caught in deadly situations such as house fires or car crashes.
On October third 2002, I was eight years old when Hurricane Lili hit the state of Louisiana. On that intense windy and rainy day, my Pastor, Mark Briggs and his daughter, Marla, decided to venture out in search of those that needed aid and assistance. Driving through their beautifully wooded neighborhood they encountered a, once strong, oak that had fallen in the middle of the street. While this wasn’t the “rescue” they had expected; it would, however, allow emergency vehicles passage to those in need, As Pastor wrapped the clunky chain around the base of the fallen tree, his truck’s front end wench moaned and groaned, in the effort to move this tree to the side of the road.
“Life may not continue the way we know it today, but it will continue. Life endures. I’ll always believe that.”The family had a dinner party, so Jonny asked were they going to die due to the lack of food the family has consumed, and then she asked could the conditions get any worse than it already was. The conflict she had was man vs self because she was questioning weather conditions and what has been going on with the weather. Another incident, was when the stove didn’t have any gas, and the family could not take any showers during the week. She was very mad because they had to cut back on taking them. This was man vs man because her mom was covering up the situation to make it better for her, Jonny, and
Nonetheless, this movie taught me about endurance and that one can achieve their goals despite the challenges that they face in life. I learnt that as long as I set my mind to it and never give up, nothing can bring me down. While this movie is really meaningful and inspiring, the deepest message that I take away from it is family. It reminds me of how much my parents have gone through to provide to my needs. Similar to Gardner’s character, my parents don’t complain or give up on me. They endured our difficulties while convincing me that everything is
Imagine, homes destroyed, a town with no electricity, and nothing but destruction left. This was the scene for many people after hurricane Sandy touched down and swept through their city. A local high school football team, the Beach Channel Dolphins were set to go to the playoffs . Their team was scattered, some arriving late to the game and their team only had two practices prior to the big game. If anyone had an excuse to not play, it was the Dolphins, but they weren't going to let a hurricane stop them from playing. Although they lost, they proved that no matter what someone faces, he/she can persevere(Source B). The Dolphins aren’t the only ones who have faced, or are going to face adversity. We all, at some point or another, will most
While the boy is able to convince his father to stop for the night and help the old man. Other people who have accustomed to the savage society would have either ignored the old man or stolen what little he had. The boy was willing to sacrifice his scarce amount of food for the stranger and give the old man a sense of comfort. He is a selfless person that is always eager to help other people.
Therefore, he lies to his wife about needing help moving the supplies into the car. When he gets right outside of the house he finds Mr. Trigg lying dead in the yard with a shotgun beside him and near the telephone that is in the yard. When he goes into the house, he finds Mrs. Trigg lying dead upstairs in the bedroom with a broken umbrella, and about fifty dead birds beside her. In conclusion, the Hocken’s were the only family to survive the birds.
Alex Scott learned from a experience, this experience is when she had cancer. Therefore, she wanted to have a lemonade stand to raise money for cancer research so that others can be treated the way that she was. Her mom told her that she wouldn't raise enough money this way, she didn't care. Today, they have raised $120 million dollars, that’s enough to fund more than 4 months of cancer research. She has learned from an obstacle in her life, she had cancer and that is when she wanted to change something in the world for the better.
Friends that I knew their parents and I knew how hard it would be for them to know about the lost of their son. Other part of my colleagues (friends) lost body parts as well. The thing that was harder more that the training, was to go to visit those who stayed alive in the hospital. Some of them were in a vegetative state; others got treatment for their wounded parts. Impossible to explain the feeling or the look of those parents standing next to their child’s bad not knowing if they should be happy or sad. With all the pain and the suffer, I have learned to appreciate life, I learned that nothing is taken for granted and every day I wake up it is a day that I received as a gift, if I could be among those wounded or dead soldiers but I did not, instead, I was from those who visit wounded soldiers and not visited by others. It is a sign, this is my destiny, and I must fulfill it in the best way possible.
The sunlight goes dim. Esther offers me a bunk. It’s highly difficult to sleep. I mean the world has basically come to an end. I start to think about how I’m going to die. Am I going to ridiculously trip and fall while running from psychopaths? Am I going to get infected and end up like the children at the corner store? Am I going to get shot by that stupid soldier that assumes everyone is infected? The question is am I going to survive this Armageddon. I feel the need to do something. I can’t just sit here and do nothing. Those “things” not people, must have some weakness. Right?
