An ill judged segment of an episode of Channel Nine’s weekly show – 60 Minutes – caused a story that was supposed to focus on the heartwarming journey of recent quadriplegic Alex McKinnon into a character defamation of Cameron Smith. Early in 2014, McKinnon was playing in the National Rugby League competition for the Newcastle Knights against the Melbourne Storm, and was faced with life in a wheelchair after fracturing his C4 and C5 vertebrae. It took eight minutes for McKinnon to be stretchered off the field, before Smith – the opposition captain – is seen consulting the referee about the incident, and questioned whether a penalty should have been awarded. Fast track 14 months, and 60 Minutes dedicated the entire program to the journey of …show more content…
Is he f---ing serious? Wouldn't you just shut up? It's f---ing ridiculous," said McKinnon. He then went on to claim Smith had never reached out after the incident, before Hayes asked McKinnon’s father if he could ever forgive Smith, provoking him into an angry response, and admitting what he did was “unforgivable.” I chose this case study, as the story instantly turned into an attack on Smith – defaming his character. What made it worse, was that Smith was not offered a right of reply until an entire day after the show was aired, possibly because of the money and ratings they would generate with a separate response interview from him. A large factor for choosing this story is the fact checking that 60 Minutes failed to do before blatantly defaming Smith. 60 Minutes failed to explain that there were four lifting incidents earlier in the game that went un-noticed by the referees, and that Smith was questioning why they were not penalised. They also failed to point out that Smith did not say a word to the referee for the full eight minutes that McKinnon was being assisted off the field, that Smith was one of the two people that spearheaded of the RISE FOR ALEX foundation, and that Smith wore McKinnon’s jersey number out of respect in the RISE FOR ALEX round
The break down was inescapable after the out break of the leading sports scandal was delivered to the world. According to Restraint vs. Slow- Mo Replay, The AP reported that,” Six major networks- CNN, NBC, ABC, ESPN, Fox News and Fox Sports said they would pull the plug on showing the video, or tone down the reruns.” The video increasingly became popular universal, showing no remorse for the victims included in the
Issues: Aaron James McKinney seemed to believe that his allegation that Shepard had made a pass at him was sufficient grounds to justify joining with friend Russell Henderson in savagely beating Shepard, clubbing him with a handgun, lashing him to a wooden fence and leaving him to die. McKinney’s attorney wanted the jury to accept that because McKinney has a homosexual encounter when he was younger and that he was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol when he alleges Shepard made a pass at him, that he was therefore not responsible for his actions.
This documentary portrays the life of wheelchair-bound individuals that are professional rugby players. A few of the players take the spotlight in this independent film such as; Mark Zupan, Joe Soares, and Keith Cavill. These particular individuals were chosen as the icons of this movie because of their phenomenal spirit and determination. The most heartfelt and inspirational story was of Mark Zupan who plays for the United States Quad Rugby team. He was the victim of a tragic car accident provoked by his best friend who was driving while intoxicated. This misfortune left him paralyzed from the waist down while his friend was unharmed. Zupan is an amazing individual that was able to forgive his friend and still involve him in his life. He
[He] pinched the wrong nurse on the right buttock and shambled on shaky hind legs out the side door up the alleyway. . . into the padded darkness of the nearest bar" (213). With Smith being the logical member of the gang, "he listens with the concentrated intensity of a buck in hunting season" (337). When he finally hears something, he stops. Suddenly.
By the time Smith and Hickock are hanged, Smith is portrayed in the role of misunderstood good guy in the good-guy/bad-guy literary device. Capote was not apposed to the death penalty, he used the double handing as the dramatic ending to In Cold Blood. Thought out the third section of In Cold Blood. Whenever Hickock is contemplating or gagging in a sexual act, Smith reacts in an angry or jealous way. Capote repeatedly interprets Smith’s actions towards Hickock as showing his morality, where Hickock is voiced as having none.
For a while they, felt that Smith was a no one and should just do what the government told him to do. Which is to be quiet forget everything that has ever happened, Smith did not want to forget he wanted to remember history. “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right. The obvious, the silly, and the true had got to be defended. Truisms are true, hold on to that! The solid world exists, its laws do not change. Stones are hard, water is wet, objects unsupported fall towards the earth's centre. With the feeling that he was speaking to O'Brien, and also that he was setting forth an important

Both 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale are dystopian novels, however, these books are a lot more complex than mere portrayals of dystopia, it can be argued that they are explorations of dystopia rather than mere portrayals. In order to explore dystopia, many themes must be considered, such as; feminism, love and repression. Nonetheless, it is apparent that human characteristics are the driving point of the two novels, predominantly, the depiction of human resilience. In an imperfect world, it is important to have certain qualities which, if plentiful, it can mean success, whereas if it lacks, it can mean failure, this characteristic is resilience. The protagonists in each novel, Winston in 1984 and Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale face situations which leave them both in disarray, and both even consider suicide. The authors tentatively highlight human resilience, its limits and most importantly its strengths into the two novels.
“‘They score! Henderson has scored for Canada!’” Foster Hewitt wordlessly described” (Pelletier) when Paul Henderson scored the series-winning goal. This allowed Canada to win the 1972 Summit Series, a moment that no one would ever forget since it all happened during the climax of the Cold War. Prior to this, the Soviets had won the previous three Olympic gold metals since Canada could not use its NHL players. Thus, this provided Canada with the chance to play hockey against the USSR using its best players. This raised the question: if Canada were able to send its best players, would it still be enough to beat the Soviets? Everyone in Canada was certain that the Soviets would not win a single game, but little did they know they underestimated the extent of the Soviets abilities. Tied in the last few minutes of game eight, Canada had to score or they would lose the series. However, when Paul Henderson scored the game-winning goal, never before had a single sporting event meant so much to Canadians. Therefore, Paul Henderson’s goal is a defining moment for Canada in the twentieth century becauseit provided Canada with the opportunity to evolve hockey, proved that Canada and our democratic society were superior to the USSR and their communist society, and brought citizens together to unify Canada as a nation.
The Hunger Games was a critically acclaimed movie when it came out; however, some critics would argue that the movie can be sometimes too violent for its intended audience. In this essay I would dissert Brian Bethune’s essay “Dystopia Now” in order to find its weaknesses and compare the movie Battle Royale with his essay.
These handicaps not only took away their emotions, but gave them seriously horrible headaches. They gave the people something that they described as,"visions". The people would have screeches in their handicaps. Harrison Bergeron does not deserve to be known as the crazy man who jumped on the stage and ripped off his handicaps. He should be known as the brave man who was willing to take off his handicaps. Bergeron might have seemed like a threat at the moment. But he is a hero. Other people might think of him as a threat to society, but they need to read the story more carefully, because it is unreasonable to describe someone as a threat when they are just trying to be
Even though Robertson shares his personal experience and opinion towards black people, his way of being inconsiderate and acting ignorant about the existing racial discrimination counts as an inadmissible and inappropriate expression favoring racism. For instance, the reaction of Blow towards his interview proves that his opinions do offend
Jeremy paxman fronted news night for many years and built his reputation as a forthright, nonsense interviewer who would not be intimidated by the position or power of those being interviewed. The first transcript an interview with MP George Galloway shows paxman as we expect him: accusatory, persistent and abrupt which leads to a heated exchange and Galloway storming off. The Parkinson interview depicts paxman in a very different light. He is on the receiving end of the questions and comes across as more affable, dropping his “take no prisoners” persona and revealing a far kinder man beneath the tough mask. Paxmans opening comment to Galloway is “are you proud of having got rid of one of the very few black women in parliament”.
He stated, "Yeah, it bothers me a lot that you want to promote-broadcast that you're associating with black people. Do you have to (Sterling)?" He also complained, "But why publicize it on the Instagram and why bring it to my games (Sterling)? " After the release of the recordings, the NBA community was in an uproar. In protest, the players of the Clippers wore their training jerseys inside out (Moore).
