Introduction Music plays a substantial role in many individuals’ lives. It is a stress reliever, a way to spread joy, etc. In November of 2015, I decided to join Parkside’s radio station, 101.5 WIPZ-LP. I was a freshman and an intended English major on a writing scholarship – one that had a concentration in song lyricism and poetry. Moreover, since April of 2016, I have been the main music director for the station, and I became assistant manager this last February. With the positions of music director and assistant manager, comes quite a few tasks and responsibilities. Even so, I would not consider any of them to be all that challenging. I am a volunteer, and I do not get paid, so for the most part, everything is done by choice. In terms …show more content…
Lisa Nalbandian was one of the founding members, and I had the pleasure of meeting her on May 4, 2018. She is now a regional manager for Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), which shows that she continued in the field after being the first manager of WIPZ. Oddly enough, she had sent the WIPZ Facebook page a message a few weeks prior, and she wanted to know how the station was operating and how much it had advanced. From there, I set up a meeting with her, for the reason that she seemed excited about visiting the station after so many years.
After giving Lisa a tour of the new station, she explained to me that the mission of WIPZ upon it being founded, was to eventually get a low power FM license to broadcast to the local area instead of just online. She was quite happy when she saw our FM certification on the wall of our on-air studio room, and she claimed that we made it to where she always wanted the station to be. She was also amazed, as she put it, that the station now has a global stream with a variety of genres. When she saw a board of showtimes, she said, “This is how we always wanted things to be – an open format for anybody to

Many of these are mailed by promotion companies – ones that often contact me via phone or email to see how their records are performing. Most of the promoters that contact me, know that more music gets rejected than aired. This is true of many stations, according to what they tell me. These promoters are additionally able to access what is in WIPZ’s rotation by checking an online Google Document I keep with all the songs that go into rotation. They can also see who our Top 30 artists are by looking at a chart I submit every Tuesday to the North American College and Community Chart (NACC) website. The creation of this chart is based off the rotational level of how much an artist is playing on the station; each song that is put in, is set on a high, medium, or light level of
Back in the day, music is not readily available online at the tip of your fingertips. Fifty years ago, you would listen to the radio and that’s how you knew what records to buy. Radio stations in large music cities such as Los Angeles, New York or Nashville normally set the standard for the most popular music. New music emerges in their city, than gets released on their local radio stations, and the music becomes a smash hit. This is not the case for the small town radio station of CKLW in Windsor, Ontario. As television was drastically changing the radio industry, CKLW had to change to keep up. This change is what resulted into CKLW- The Big 8, a radio station that created new standards of radio hosting as well as rock and roll music. CKLW influenced not only music throughout North America but the entire music industry such as Bill Drake's "Boss Radio” technique, and how this station influenced its home city of Windsor, Ontario. CKLW evolved from a small city radio station to become “The Big 8” a huge nationwide music icon that was responsible for not only changing the music industry but changing the face of radio forever.
Today, CKLW is a news and information station for the Windsor-Essex community. Now in Windsor, Detroit radio dominates once again. Now, 68% of Windsorites listen to Detroit radio stations. The Big 8 still had a tremendous influence in shaping the face of radio, in creating megahits in music industry, and held a huge community presence in its hometown of Windsor, Ontario. CKLW was a small town radio station that became one of the biggest radio sensations of the 1960’s and1970’s. The Big 8 developed into an icon for not only music and radio; but, also brought out the music fanatic in everyone.
...join so long ago I never really knew I 'd end up here doing what I do. It seems like the common theme for me is seeing something and saying “I can 't do that” then pursuing it until I can. One of my fondest memories is watching someone at the percussion concert play a marimba solo when I was in sixth grade and just looking over at Justin molder and laughing saying “wow I can 't do that” now I do that all the time. I didn 't think I could ever be the leader of a group like this it seemed like too much for me, but now after watching and being in this program and seeing where it could go and what I can do, I want to help take it there. I feel great about next year no matter what happens but I 'm ready to step up, I 'm ready take on whatever I have to to make this year the best year yet. Not just for me but for us all every last one of us in this great family I call home.
Music is magical: it soothes you when you are upset and cheers you up when you are down. To me, it is a communication with souls. I listen to different genres of music. When appreciating each form of music, with its unique rhythm and melody, I expect to differentiate each other by the feelings and emotions that it brings to me. However, I would definitely never call myself “a fan of jazz” until I witnessed Cécile McLorin Salvant’s performance last Friday at Mondavi Center. Through the interpretations and illustrations from Cécile’s performance, I realized that the cultural significance and individual identity are the building blocks of jazz music that create its unique musical features and support its development.
Music’s role on society has changed drastically through the course of its history as it has become ever so increasingly expansive. Many of the previous musical movements were only for the wealthy as entertainment
Music is regarded as a method of passing a message. Though some songs do not intend to do that, the message in them is still perceived. The song, “Get up, ...
There is one universal language: the language of music. Music has a special quality and ability to bridge both social and cultural divides. A proposed theory by Dr. Gray, Founder and Director of National Musical Arts’ BioMusic Program; describes music has been around longer than human-beings have. Music is the one thing human beings from various backgrounds can relate to. Every living creature would agree. Music is heard everywhere not just among humans, but in nature as well, through the twitting of birds, winds blowing, the soft sound of raindrops against a windowpane, the ocean waves moving back and forth and the hum of the ocean rushing in a sea shell. There is no escaping it; music lives in and surrounds us steadily. While there are countless songs which confer social or cultural consciousness, this paper will analyze and address the dynamics of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes”, video. Stylistically, the paper will examine the artist point of view, the unique use of lyrical analysis and sound description in relation to its historical, social, political and/or cultural context. This essay will also trace the lyrical analysis and sound description of song and discuss how the elements (visually, sonically, and lyrically) interplay with the theme of immigration and/or violence.
In my paper, I argue that artists capture important insight in their personal experiences through music. In particular, I assert tha...

Instead of having thousands and thousands of radio stations across the nation, XM radio uses a broadcast center in Washington, D.C. for the majority of its broadcasting. This will cut down costs of office space and employees, which in turn would decrease their budget. This center has “20 multi-function produ...

Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
Once again, radio is currently at a crucial stance. FM radio was once the means in which someone could find out about new music artists, hear their favorite top songs, and catch up on local/world news. However, with the surge of the Internet at the turn of the century, the role of the radio starts to diminish. The Internet can now be used for gathering local news or weather in a fast and efficient manner. It can also be used as a way for music fans to find new artists similar to ones that they currently like, and (although not legal) ease in the process of downloading complete albums in high-quality formats for free. CD and MP3 players are now very popular for the person “on-the-go,” and as a result, it’s very easy to find people that remark: “I don’t listen to radio.” The reason for this is that radio has lost its niche. No longer is radio as convenient of a means to get news and experience new or popular music. Radio is forced, once again, to innovate itself in order to keep from being eliminating by the more popular types of med...
