is the model by which people comprehend experience and cope with the enormous and often baffling task of being human.
The hero is one of the innumerable mythic archetypes or models by which we individually or collectively, come to organize our understanding of the world, the nature and purpose of human life, and events that take place, such as a war between righteous and unrighteous forces. (pg 38). Heroes are more frequently presented as brave, smart, hardworking, honest, punctual, and many more good qualities. Birth of heroes occurs under wondrous circumstances; bowing trees; a shower of gold penetrating the ceiling of a room in which a young girl has been confined; the visit of a god in the guise of some other creature, animal or human; and mysterious prophecies. Usually hero has been sired by a supernatural being. (pg 40). They are presented in such a visible way that they always remain as an example of what people should try to attain during their life time. Not surprisingly, the hero destined for greatness must be recognized in early in life. Often occurs accomplishing a spectacular physical deed- such as young Arthur’s removal of the sword Excalibur from the stone that had held it until the rightful owner should come along. today. Almost every culture required the accomplishment of an arduous task to signify the end of child wood. Some of the examples include enduring bitter cold, surviving the wilderness, and conquering a predatory beast. Heroes usually sets out on a journey fraught with danger and has a challenging task that must be performed. These tasks are very difficult and heroes are expected to complete the task despite of all the circumstances. They work hard every single moment to accomplish the task. The journey of heroes continues even thought is very hard to accomplish the task. Mythical journey is also a quest. The hero searches for his home land, a buried treasure, the Holy Grail. Attainment of the goal gives the shape and our purpose of life. Even today we value and worship hero in many different ways.
They set the example of us. There are some similarities to the concept of hero in mythical stories and present worlds. Our expectation is set by myths. We look for progress in our lives and in those of others. We expect the obstacles; we say ‘no pain, no gain’. Heroes make sure the journey worth the effort and hard work always pays of. They also present the ideas that harder we work, more successful we will be. It helps us to be a more productive and more
victorious. Heroes are represented as a strong character in film. They are always strong, defeating, and brave. They do everything in their power to protect others, especially the heroin. They are presented as a superman who has power to save all of us. Films are of different types and often they are present to send different message to the viewers. However, all viewers may not interpret the same meaning of the message. Only the problem with film in today’s that male characters are almost always presented as a hero in the film. Film creates unrealistic and problematic examples of heroes for boys. As we know, films are focused on boy being hero, and in some cases girl is vulnerable. So, male (hero) do whatever he can on his power to save a women. It gives the impression to the viewer boys are more powerful than girls. Boy has more power than female. Especially we have to be very careful with younger generation about how we want them to teach about heroes because they learn faster by films. Not only films, we have seen plenty of inequality between males and females including chances of opportunity and wages. Women are frequently paid less than men for the same job they do.
Humanity has created this “universal story” of what a hero is, or at least the myth of it, time and again. Different tasks and encounters with a variety of villains all lead the hero to the prize, to a new life (Seger). This person deemed the hero is as ordinary as the next but what makes them different is the drastic test that they must face. Individuals admire this character because the hero stands for something, something bigger than themselves. Whether it be the compassionate act of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games or the death of the oldest brother in Brother Bear, as an outsider, an individual sees the human side of these heroes and relates. Connor Lassiter from Unwind by Neal Shusterman is an ideal example of the myth due to the
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Heroes, the unordinary beings with extravagant abilities, from powers and competence to skills and talents. Heroes are people who are idealized by society for their courage and individuality. Iconic and well recognized heroes like Hercules, Superman, Spiderman and Achilles are some of the few heroes known around. All heroes have a similarity to each other, for example Beowulf and Batman. While both can be considered great heroes, they differ significantly, yet are similar in other ways.
Through reading about these heroes, kids believe that there are good things that happen to good people. These heroes encourage many kids when they’re young, and provide them with right and wrong. For example, many fairy tales and comic stories show kids the kinds of behaviors that need in order to succeed in life, to improve society, and to overcome hard times. They become their example of healthy adult role models who through hard times and many contractions they were able to react positively and overcome hard times. Heroes prove to them that no matter how much suffering and hardships in the world, there are good people, who always do the right thing and provide us with hope in hard times. Heroes do provide courage for us to overcome emotionally, physically, or spiritually
Also, when things don't go as planned, the society has someone to count on to help them. Heroes fought battles for their societies. For example, Odyssey went out to fight the Trojan War for twenty years. Greek heroes usually have strength and protect themselves, their family, and kingdom which is the Greek ideal. They believed and respected prowess in war, xenia, bravery, strength, and loyalty.
Heroes are found everywhere in the world. They are seen in movies, on television, in books, and in reality. A hero can be anyone, from a friend to a fictional character. To be considered a hero, one must make selfless sacrifices, develop and learn, overcome challenges and temptations, and ultimately present their known world with a gift of any kind. Homer’s
Hero is a word that is commonplace in our society. We seem to always be able to turn on the latest news story and find the newest local man who saved that beautiful kitten from that building that was burning down. When we say hero a vast array of different definitions come to people’s minds. Our definition of hero in our world is most definitely not a constant. In the Epic of Gilgamesh and the novel Monkey many would consider the main characters and their strongest companions nothing close to heroes but rather tyrants. I have to say that these people have defined hero too narrowly, and I must prove them of their folly. Monkey and Gilgamesh, despite the many sins they commit, highlight what it truly means to be a hero, reminding us to always aspire to greatness.
Societies construct heroes that represent and embody the ideals of those who create them and read about them. Their is a stark contrast between the hero in the time of Beowulf and Hamlet’s creation and heroes created in modern times. Current literature, movies, and television portray a different kind of hero from those created in 1000 AD to 1600 AD. A hero is defined as someone who is "admired for achievements and noble qualities"," shows great courage", and in historical texts such as Beowulf and Hamlet is a "legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability" or an "illustrious warrior" (Merriam-Webster). Despite the popular belief that the time for heroes has passed away, based on the needs of society, today's heroes still exist and have evolved into something new.
From the beginning of time, mythology has appeared to be one key method of understanding life’s confusions and battles. Within these myths lies a hero. From myth to myth and story to story, heroes experience what may be called a struggle or a journey, which lays down their plot line. Bearing tremendous strength, talent, and significant admiration, a hero holds what is precious to their audience, heroism. Over time however, no matter the hero, the hero’s role remains indistinguishable and identical to the position of every other hero.
The term “Hero” has been in our civilization for centuries. On the surface, a hero is a person of honor, integrity, and the will to fight for what he or she believes in. Nearly every story that is told is centered around a character who in one way or another is a hero. They are a person whom the common people are supposed to strive to be; but does this icon truly exist?

According to “The Hero’s Journey”, societies throughout history have lifted up exemplary individuals. There is almost always one individual who is a perfect example. He is the guy that leads others and is looked up to. The greeks valued a character that they could aspire to be. Also from “The Hero’s Journey”, the hero seems to be invincible and incorruptible. The hero is tested, but he always seems to prevail. In real life, this can be seen as a world leader or a famous warrior. As quoted from The Odyssey, “ He fought only to save his life and to bring his shipmates home.”(561). The hero always fights for good causes and for others. You never hear about a hero being selfish or foolish. They are always pure and just, so they are often well known and popular among the
What is a hero? That is the question that has many different answers depending on who you ask. There are some pretty popular answers to that question. One of those answers is; “A hero is someone who helps other people, or helps to make other people's lives better.” Another is; “A hero is a person who tries to make the world a better place.” or “A hero is a person who does something that is more than what is expected.” Still others are “A hero is someone that doesn't do something for his or her own problems but for the benefit of others” and “A hero is a person that doesn't want to be a hero just to be famous.” Those were just some statements about what people think a hero is, but what about the qualities a hero should have?
Throughout time, heroes have stereotypically been described as men who possess qualities such as courage, strength, leadership, and determination. Certainly, many of these characteristics have changed as time has passed. In modern society, heroes can simply be average people who sacrifice their own happiness for the welfare of others and do their best to create a change in the world. Beowulf, an extraordinary warrior in the Anglo Saxon period, is an epic hero because of his pride, strength and courage. He fought many battles in order to protect the Danes from chaos. Angelina Jolie, like Beowulf, is a hero because she defeats every impediment to help and fight against inequality.
A person can be a hero for saving the life of one or of millions. Heroes are not only real people, but they are also fantasy figures. Children are extremely interested with legendary and fantasy figures because they take on such tasks as: difficult journeys, challenges with dragons, discovering lost treasure, and changing the nature of the world through their singular acts of courage and selflessness. They also endure much resistance, hardship, and danger. Often the hero learns valuable lessons about survival and self-reliance. Not only do heroes teach valuable lessons they give a child a sense of belonging. To a child, a hero is an invincible person who will change the world.
