Heroes, the unordinary beings with extravagant abilities, from powers and competence to skills and talents. Heroes are people who are idealized by society for their courage and individuality. Iconic and well recognized heroes like Hercules, Superman, Spiderman and Achilles are some of the few heroes known around. All heroes have a similarity to each other, for example Beowulf and Batman. While both can be considered great heroes, they differ significantly, yet are similar in other ways.
The story of both heroes is quite peculiar when comparing them to each other. Beowulf is recognized for his almighty strength of defeating monsters by himself. In a kingdom located in Denmark, Beowulf travels to aid the king Hrothgar. Hrothgar had a major problem

of a monster named Grendel. Throughout the kingdom Grendel was known as the destroyer of armies, no man nor army could defeat him until Beowulf came to the rescue. Beowulf singlehandedly killed Grendel by ripping his arm out and then stabbing him with his claw, fatally wounding Grendel to his death. Shortly afterwards Beowulf killed Grendel's mother and then fought to the death with a fire breathing dragon, who perished in battle, but not alone, taking Beowulf down with him. Batman in the other hand is a civilian named Bruce Wayne and owner of a major company named Wayne Enterprise. Bruce(Batman) is a wealthy person who uses his money to fight crime. The story of Batman takes place in Gotham city, much like modern New York city. Batman's major problem is the significant number of crime in the city. Batman began to be made after Bruce witnessed the murder of his parents in an alley when he was around 10. Major threats of batman are enemies like The Joker, The Penguin, and Bane, all being reckless murderers.Throughout all both characters are considered Heroes regardless of the differences. There are many differences in Batman and Beowulf like for example, location, personality, heroism, reliance and backstories.
Batman occurs in a time period and setting location different from Beowulf. Batman takes place in a city named Gotham city that resembles much of that in modern New York city. Gotham is a modern city congested with buildings and people. Beowulf setting is in Denmark during a more medieval period with a less number of people. Another Difference between both heroes is their personality. Batman is more of hypocritical man who cares for the good of the people. Batman also does not believe in killing people no matter the situation or the individual. Overall Batman is more of a modest man who does not care for fame neither does he care for money. Batman uses a mask so his face remains concealed and free from the public and his enemies. Beowulf is more of an arrogant character with lots of pride and unafraid to kill, he likes to show off and only fights battles that have rewards for him. Often the rewards being money and fame. Batman relies on knowledge, gadgets and his sidekick Robin unlike Beowulf who relies on strength and agility with little to no weapons and no combat partner. Comparing batman with Beowulf bring out a great differentiation between both, nevertheless still having similarities and being
heroes. Throughout both heroes stories the heroes finds out they are not invincible. They can be defeated by other contenders and aren't immortal, after all realizing they are only human. During Batman's story, Batman faced an enemy named Bane. Bane is a villain with superhuman strength capable of killing people single handed blows with his fist. In the comic book Batman-knightfall all of Batman's super villains escape Arkham asylum which is a mental prison. After the escape of the villains Batman goes after all of them and begins trying to take each and everyone of them by himself causing him to become weak and tired after pushing himself beyond his limits. Bane then takes advantage of Batman's condition and begins beating him to the point where Batman can't defend himself. Then Bane Picked up Batman and slammed Batman's back against his knee breaking his back and causing Batman to go into a coma. After waking up from the coma Bruce realized that he could not save the city by himself and that he was beatable("Knightfall." (Story Arc). Web. 22 Oct. 2015). There was only so much he could do by himself. Just like Batman Beowulf realized he was beatable after fighting the dragon. In Beowulf's story Beowulf is informed that there has been sightings of a fire breathing dragon. Beowulf goes with an army of soldiers to take down the dragon, but all the soldiers abandon him. After a long and gruesome battle between Beowulf and the dragon Beowulf slays the dragon but is in the verge of death himself. While laying on the floor Beowulf realized it was the end of him moments later dying (SparkNotes Editors. “SparkNote on Beowulf.” SparkNotes.com. SparkNotes LLC. 2003. Web. 24 Sept. 2015, lines 2516-2820). Some other similarities between Beowulf and Batman are their heroism. Batman fought against Bain until he became close to death himself, never stopping or giving up. Batman fought all the villains by himself without thinking of himself but rather for the city and people of Gotham. Beowulf fought the dragon by himself even after all his soldiers cowardly ran away. Beowulf fought until his death in order to protect his kingdom. Even though Batman did not die like Beowulf did, both gave out all they could in order to protect what they believed was right no matter the obstacles. Both Batman and Beowulf are recognized as heroes for their many talents and strengths. Batman war recognized as a hero for being modest and audacious in keeping the city free of crime. Batman had to face the city while having the memory of his parents after witnessing their death face to face. The memory haunted him yet continued helping the people. He never accepted gifts, neither did he acknowledge fame. All his work came out of him and all his gear came out of his pocket from his company. Beowulf relates in that he came from a family of the king of the Geats. Even Though Beowulf came to aid the Danes because he was receiving praise in fame and money in exchange of taking down Grendel, latter on he became more than a contractor. He then killed Grendel's mother and slayed a dragon single handedly in order to protect his kingdom after becoming king. While both ended with different faiths, both fought for what they believed was correct, just like a hero would do. A hero is someone who does good for the people and is seen as a courageous individual. Batman was more of a modest, and full of morals hero. Batman did not believe in killing people neither did he believe in killing all the villains he fought. Instead he would send them to prison. Batman relies in his equipment and knowledge for success in keeping Gotham safe. Beowulf relies on strength and endurance therefore believing killing is not wrong in his beliefs. Throughout his story Beowulf kills many monsters yet he saves many people by doing so. Overall both heroes are extremely different in regards of morals, personalities, and the way they handle situations in their life challenges, furthermore both being different in many ways, but still being considered heroes for multiple different purposes. Either batman or Beowulf are the same type of hero, they are their own type of hero recognized for different reasons. Both being iconic figures of the hero world.
While fighting the Dragon Beowulf shows feats of strength and courage that define him as a hero. The classical hero displays a special quality that separates him from the rest of
Recently, students of Olympian High School have stumbled upon the question, "What is a hero?" In the school's 2013 Young Minds Essay Contest, students are expected to consider universal concerns and ideas. Many times when people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, and many other Marvel characters who display unattainable superpowers. However, heroes are prevalent throughout the world. A hero can be anyone who has the desire to help others, brave in dangerous situations, and does not look at exterior gain from helping others.
The third comparison is how the both get treated with a great deal of respect. Beowulf gets respected through out the lands of his time, and by his men whom are scare with out the help and support of Beowulf. The soldiers get treated with up most respect by people not just of our country, but people for across the world that they have helped out in hard times in their country.
Although Beowulf might have been a great warrior, usually people do not think that he is the greatest warrior from a story. Beowulf had the strength and the tactics to take down tons and tons of men on his own, but did not have the wisdom of other warrior figures. Beowulf was mainly strength and toughness, and sometimes a warrior needs to have some type of knowledge to ever be able to fight. A great example to Beowulf would be Luke Skywalker. Luke is in a story that is not the same type of story but, has the same concept. The only main difference would have to be the setting and the type of movie. Beowulf is a warrior that is considered super human and doesn't really belong anywhere, because he is not truly con...
Although there are many similarities, the few differences between Beowulf and Batman are quite evident. The epic hero Beowulf received rewards for his intrepidness and heroism. For example he received wealth and was later made king. He was primarily interested in glory, which eventually led to his death at the claws of the dragon. On the contrary, Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne, already has wealth and power, even though this is not of great importance to him...
In Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight there are two heroes that help the present day reader gain insight into what the hero of the Middle Ages would have held as ideals and necessary triumphs. Beowulf and Sir Gawain each fill a different role within their unique societies. Beowulf is a leader and a savior in times of need, willing to go to any length to help another group of people as well as his own kingdom. Sir Gawain is also willing to rise during moments of trouble within his court but lacks the altruism that is inherent in Beowulf's leadership. Although there are many pursuable comparisons within the two tales, the most apparent between the two heroes are that of faith, the men who encouraged them, bravery and the adversaries they both faced.
One major similarity between Beowulf and Superman is their battles with supernatural foes. For example, Beowulf defeated the monstrous Grendel, a dragon, and Grendel’s mother. Similarly, superman had several fights with the invaders from Krypton. The battles are related in many ways such as their fighting style. The heroes in both battles only use their fist in battle, that is if the opponent
...ash between good and evil. Beowulf is a representation of a Godly figure, possibly Christ, whereas his enemies represent figures of darkness, possibly Satan. Due to his battle with Grendel, Beowulf realises the true abilities of Gods power and develops into a more Saint like character who is more concerned with giving help rather than Gaining fame. He seeks Gods guidance, but looks to pagan ideals when he deems so. Although he never completely takes complete advantage of Gods power, he does earn the fame and glory that he fought bravely for.
Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
Heroes have been around for ages and they all seem to obtain characteristics that captivate their people to view them as heroes. To be a hero means to rise above the troubled situation and become the bigger person. Beowulf was a hero for his people just as Katniss Everdeen was a hero for her people in thrilling novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins They were very similar in ways but differed in ways as well. Selflessness, bravery, and weapons used were just three of the things that symbolize their heroism.
In conclusion, Beowulf’s honor, strength, and bravery all prove on many occasions that he is most definitely worthy of the title of “Epic Hero”. He exhibits all characteristics of a hero, even if they aren’t apparent at first. Proven throughout his story, he truly
